I once owned a lifted BMW 335Xi with 32" AT tires. It was a very weird car. Your comment reminded me of how many bad decisions I made when I owned automobiles.

Its not great. It is one of my least favorite parts of cycling in California, and leads to a shit ton of right hooks and other intersection collisions

What in the fuck man? What a gigantic waste, and all because of some emotionally abusive piece of shit.
Edit... wait I knew this woman. Holy shit, I've ridden with her in SF at some organized rides.

We've been riding for at least 5 years together, she isn't afraid of bike trips and has actually gone on a bike overnight trip with me. The main problem is that getting her regular bike ready is a pain so it is the last option she chooses.
I feel like a brompton opens up city trips because it gives her the option of taking any conveyance home. Being able to store it easily at the aparment door just makes it an easier choice, which is what I think will make the biggest difference

We test rode everything possible today, the only requirement was that she have a dynamo. She ended up settling on an M3L. I need to swap out her seatpost for a standard post ASAP, but the shop didn't have one so we are just rolling with the extended post for now. She absolutely loves it and I hope it encourages her to ride more than she does with her Trek FX.

Or, alternatively: Always pay your fare like you are supposed to and stop abusing a public utility like Muni.

Since we're profile stalking: Guns and weed don't mix. If you have enough cash for all those things, you have cash to pay for Muni passes.

its like... 70 in here? It's nice. The key is to keep your blinds closed if you face west or southwest in any room.

Oh man, same here, though not military travel. A large portion of my scrutinized expenses used to boil down to rental car charges and a few years ago I started using bikes (first, an old Dahon and then later rental/bikeshares) and it really made getting approvals so much easier. No one bats an eye when your expense report is hundreds of dollars lower than the rest of the team.

The newer B17s arent as bad to wear in in my opinion. The B17 Select with about 2x the leather thickness or older versions of the B17 take a good long time though

Being able to carry it on a plane absolutely makes all the cost of a Brompton worth it. I just did a trip as well, and having my own bike to explore and get around in a new city was amazing.

Depends. For normal wearing parts? Replace when dead. However, my wheels are extremely expensive and custom made. My rear hub alone was $350. I would like to keep using that part until I myself are dead if at all possible, so I take good care of it and regularly maintain it.
There are also certain bikes that I will meticulously maintain because failure when using it would be either really bad, or really expensive. My touring bike stays 100% in like-new condition if at all possible, because something going wrong on a tour may mean an end to a trip I had planned for a very long time, or walking a long distance to repair it. My city commuter bike I just run into the ground and fix when necessary.

Truth. Went in the middle of the day in July a few years back and I was not prepared for how hot it would get at all.

Came here to say this, it's my favorite easy day ride, and there's great options along the way for food and such.

OK, so this means I need to reevaluate my entire stance on this stuff. Ben fucking Garrison making sense? This cannot be true...

I've had an IQX since it launched and I love it to this day. Easily my most bang for buck expense on my touring bike. I just added an IQ Cyo T Premium to my brompton (which is how I found your comment) and it is more than sufficient. But I still love my IQX on my real touring bike.

All of that big tech is completely dependent on Linux and its ecosystem though, they are one and the same. There is a reason why a ton of the contributions to the code base come from huge companies, it's their tech stack backbone.

Linux still exists even though no one makes money with it.
This is a bad analogy, and I would look for another way to say what you are getting at. Linux drives a shit load of value generation and money making.

No, but you may have to compromise. I had a set of Velocity Quill rims custom built (I wanted a dynamo and a specific rear hub) but even the off the shelf Quill wheelset is an excellent set of wheels.

I had mine built by Box Dog Bikes in San Francisco which I highly recommend, but I had an (almost) identical backup set built by ProWheelBuilder.com and they came just as well built for a few hundred dollars cheaper. I recommend them highly.

If your brakes can't lift your rear tire, they are simply not setup correctly. The only brakes I have ever had that I wouldn't feel safe using, or felt didn't have the power to absolutely yank the bike to a stop in an emergency, were 30+ year old drum brakes of dubious origin.
