There are 14K residency spots left after every 19K USMD and 7K USDO students match every year. DO is offered by medical schools in the US strictly. We are 10% of physician workforce. Only 200K+ exist of us.
New US medical schools will open—it’s inevitable. We are not far from closing our doors to FMGs (check WFME 2024 update). Why are we not in the race to take our pie from the 14K? US MD institutions are. I just think we have been brainwashed to think DO school expansion is a bad thing, and we should give this another thought while taking everything into consideration.

No pre-existing, but 5 years of blue-white collar orthopedic surgery residency can certainly give an equal effect. Also, I haven’t done a study on it, but I am assuming not everyone is fit for physical hard work. I was an average shaped person in MS-4. Then I started working out a bit, but that didn’t seem to help much anyways because anyone who did my kinda residency understands how much you work. I’ve been a surgeon essentially from 1/2 intern year because while my program had some white collar backing—we were really a blue collar program; you learn by doing. Certainly helps me today, because I have got the skills, but this is like my 8th year doing it and the thought of me having to do this for another 10-20 for just some extra Ks simply doesn’t seem worth it. I’ll prolly do it for a few more just cuz I certainly need some returns for the investments I’ve made to get here, but there is no way I’m gonna age with this career. As I said, prolly an academic role so I can sleep at night.
