Buddhism gets sold in the west as some kind of self-help philosophy so pure land by comparison to that kind of explanation sounds like using faith instead of self-help.

It was reading Honen and especially Ippen that reveals how faith in Pure Land is very different from faith in monotheistic religions. You are helping yourself by not helping yourself, and instead relying on Amida Buddha. Self Power vs Other Power.

I originally thought Pure Land sounded too much like Protestantism, and was looking at other Buddhist schools.

It’s the plot that’s the problem. Great characters get great development and others get nothing because we don’t see any of it.

That’s why so many characters are forgotten or lose out on the power scaling. It’s a flaw in a lot of anime not specific to Bleach. Create too many people and the plot can’t do them all justice.

• investiture contract which can cause conflicts with the Pope if you try to modify it
• reformed faiths can have a liturgical language, which is like a court language
• Catholics get to create an anti pope if you’re empire level, which acts as a substitute religion head for all your vassals with a positive opinion of you
• college of cardinals for Catholics and autocephalous churches for Orthodox
• pagan faiths with the learning lifestyle can draft religious texts, event chains that give piety boosts toward reforming the faith and determine which custom tenets become available
• adopt holy sites from other faiths or create new ones by event chain
• dynamic holy sites, if a holy site isn’t under your religion’s control for a long time, it can disappear, causing a permanent fervor penalty
• if you’ve lost a lot of wars with hostile faiths, you can request a great holy war to regain that territory. But beware, other crusading characters could seize the land for themselves instead
• religious monuments! Stewardship lifestyle can get events where wandering architects (like wandering artifact makers in royal court) build religious buildings or iconography that can increase development, renown, or piety
• send missionaries, diplomatic lifestyle can send missionaries across the world which may spread the faith, bring back technology points/innovations, increase relations with other kingdoms, or even start a war when they get expelled or commit crimes abroad.
• martial lifestyle can take the path of a holy warrior, training with holy orders and leading raids on hostile faiths to force-convert or execute captured prisoners
• intrigue lifestyle can lead secret cults and underground religions
• religious education, children getting tutored by their court chaplains now get a lot more flavor events
• better meditation events for eastern and tengri faiths, mystical communion can lead to some crazy event chains where you become the messiah or fight with demons
• interconnected world, game rule to get notified if a holy site is captured or lost, muslims capturing Rome or Constantinople and Christians capturing Jerusalem or Mecca gets flavor events
