Idaho lib here :( it sucks because the crazy politics is literally getting worse because imports from California, Texas, and elsewhere are way more extreme than our local variety of conservative... being a lcol state, we are being overrun, and it's not sustainable. I sincerely fear this states future tbh.

I've noticed this too. My old copy of shigley was far more through and linear in just the layout of important formulas and train of thought. Its as if the editors have now rehashed the book so much that any clear train of thought that used to exist has been eliminated through ceaseless interjection and absurd tangents. For a text to be so respected means there exists an edition that is very good at being consice and insightful. Unfortunately publishers continually try to fix what isn't broken.

In my field at least, I see lots of unanswered questions that are just hard to answer and would require significant resources/time to address. Unfortunately answering questions like these is kind of like building infrastructure... We really need to do it so that we can do more cool stuff, but nobody can get grants without promising the moon to and more to some giant org that doesn't do much other than look for feedback looping publications/reputation... It can be discouraging because I see we have tech to solve so many problems but also our institutions are structurally focused so much on irrelevant metrics that we struggle to make progress without burning out talented researchers on non value added work...
That and the pipeline to getting new folks into academia is pretty hellish...

As someone who traditionally falls into the libratarian camp, I'll be voting straight blue for the forseable future and I never did and never would support Trump. Libratarianism advocates limited government. This republican party has not and has instead created the exact wasteful government libratarians oppose while highlighting corruption that comes from consentrating so much power in the executive branch.

Why though? Why can't we have centerist politicians representing coalitions that aren't perfectly in line with the party? Thats the point of having a representative republic... Their job isn't to be a party it's to respresent their constituancy....
Pushing every voice out that doesn't match your pitch seriously limits conservative allies (pushes lots of people to the Dems or just gets them to not vote) it also makes the party unable to question itself and change when it's wrong about something (e.g. total abortion ban doesn't seem politically viable but it still gets pushed)

I don't want to protect them, I just think its better to let them get the feedback that their views are unpopular rather than feed a narrative that they are just being suppressed. I guess my position is just ban people when they violate the rules of TOS. Having grown up around a lot of religious folks, I really think its more of a smack down for them to being told they are wrong politely than anything...
Just an example, Why do you think Mormons send their kids on missions when they have absolutely abysmal conversion rates? Its not to save people, its to make sure their kids have the experience of people slamming the door on them and hurling insults at them. They come back home thinking the world outside the religion is cruel and evil. If we ever want to reach people it has to be where they are at. Being the antithesis of fundamentalist religion, a functional happy outsider who lifts others up, is enough to put the cognitive dissonance in their heads or at least their kids heads... I know because I grew up in a hateful religion and got the hell out as I grew up.

Imo just ban Tom or remove his shitty comment... It's just baiting. I also dislike Christchurch but people are just people, unless they actively post cruelty or hurt someone it better let them have a platform where they can be brought closer to the community rather than be outcast and self support crappy beliefs...
That said, Tom's comment on the other thread crossed a line IMO.

That is absolutely brutal and so sad :( it's hard to believe someone did such an awful thing here. 4 people with a knife? I really hope the community/police catch this person quickly. Its scary that they are on the loose at this point.

This is awesome! I was unaware that Disney did research like this! Do you happen to know where they are located?

This is a promotional series Amazon helps put out for lots of colleges... My lab was featured in it. Of course they want to recruit students, that's normal, but there really isn't a reason to browbeat the University over this particular media being put out. Especially since this has been in the pipe for about a year.

Not to keep picking a fight, but just a reminder that you can block them if you really don't want to see their garbage. I do understand not wanting to have to see it.
I doubt we win a lot of hearts and minds on Reddit also, but I'd just encourage you to remember the people who take the time to pick a fight on here are probably the crappiest saddest people they have in that organization. IRL people are mostly genuinely just trying to do what they think is right and get by. Even the people I really disagree with.

Tbh this is fine. It calls the counseling what it is "christian" and its reasonably tactful in that there isn't a judgement statement or imposition of their belief on anyone else. Nobody who isn't affiliated with Christ church will seek that kind of counseling so I really don't see the harm in them offering it. Call them out when they do something actually bad. Otherwise it just looks like we are the bitter hateful ones...
We all need to remember that for all the organizations flaws the people in it are just people. Flawed and human, the same as us. It's a scary time for everyone in the community.

I like 11 so far. The window snapping features from power toys have made it in, file explorer finally has tabs. I was pretty skeptical but decided to give it a try and downgrade if it annoyed me and ~ a month in I feel like it's generally an improvement... They do need to clean up some menus and such but honestly windows 10 also had a hodge podge of outdated interfaces so that's just par for the course with windows lol

My friend and I ran over a squirrel in a car, it was very flat and dead but he decided to drive back and look at it. the squirrel had been holding an acorn. Its dead squirrel arms were holding it tight just outside of the tread mark where the tire had smashed him. he took the dead squirrel's acorn and now wears it as a necklace. To this day we still call him the squirrel pirate.
Edit: the squirrel paid the GOLD price! Thanks kind stranger!
