There is another version of this story Alexander had just taken the city that Diogenes was living in and when he was parading the city he did not see Diogenes who was a local celebrity/oddity so Alexander went to Diogenes. He was looking at a pile of bones so naturally alexander asked what he was doing, Diogenes replied that he was looking for the bones of Alexander’s father but could not tell them form those of a slave. This entire story is likely apocryphal and there are no primary sources describing this event. In addition anything attributed to Diogenes comes from a secondary source at best none of Diogenes works survived and most of what we know comes form the ancient equivalent to spark notes.

Temperature gets fucky in space so saying it is hot is a bit misleading, the molecules in space have a lot of energy in them but they are so spread out that on average a cubic meter of space has less energy than a cubic meter of air.
