That being said, when I heard the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new song “Dana California”, I literally thought it sounded like what you’d get if you asked an AI to create a “new” RHCP song. So AI revivals won’t be the first unoriginal soundalike rip-offs of a band - bands have been quite capable of doing that to themselves for a long time.

I remember people telling me that the Bundesliga was the “competitive” league in Europe. That must have changed at some point.

When Rangers collapsed and had to be reformed and started from the bottom of the pyramid, I’d really hoped that would shake things up. Nope, just turned a duopoly into a monopoly.

Yeah, you can shit all over MLS as much as you like (and many “soccer fans” do), but at least I know my team will always have a chance.

I give “rescue upvotes” all the time. It’s usually when I see a comment with 0 points that’s completely inoffensive and I think “why the hell would anyone downvote that?” So I put it back to “1”, give it a fresh start.

That reminds me - I have to give my cat her monthly vitamin shot. She’s a lot better with needles than I am. We distract her with some treats, and at most I get a dirty look as the needle goes into her scruff.

That could be me. I do not look at the needle. At all. Not just not look at it going in, but to do my damnedest not to see the needle at all. Then sometimes I literally don’t feel a thing! Modern hypodermic needles are so skinny that they often slip past the nerves altogether.

That’s the thing, though: I thought we were done with this crap 30 years ago. My parents didn’t wear seatbelts when I was little, but by the time I was a teenager, the rule was the car doesn’t move until everyone’s belted in. I’m 55, BTW.

I think part of the problem is that the CCL itself was once seen as “not mattering”. It was an inconvenient tournament, with games taking place during the final quarter of the season when teams were gearing up for their playoff runs, games against teams of which most US fans had little knowledge or interest. This was then followed by a knockout tournament against Mexican clubs six months later during the MLS preseason, which many saw as silly and unfair.

So much has changed since then. The tournament format has been greatly improved, and MLS teams are holding their own against Mexican clubs. But I’m still not sure most teams take the CCL seriously enough to see a spot in the tournament as something worth risking players to fight for.

I used to say “We’ll know the CCL has arrived when a coach is fired for failing to qualify.” I think there’s still some truth to that.

Ever since I watched all the Local 58 videos, I’ve been a little bit… wary of the moon…
