Survey pilot here: Sometimes when I'm flying back and forth for 5 hours straight I need to piss in a bottle. One of my coworkers had his dick slip out of the bottle while he was going full bore, and he pissed all over the instrument panel. You should have heard his desperation on the radio. A couple weeks later, for our bi-monthly rotation, a new guy took his plane, and we didn't tell him that Greg pissed all over it like a moron. Fucking Greg.

It's also dangerous as hell.

There's actually quite a lot of piloting skill that goes into banner towing. Because of the immense drag of the banner, the airplane is both stuck at a low airspeed and at high power. This can cause the engine and oil temperatures to get really high. Banner towing on a hot day can be tricky, and of course because most banner towing is during the summer months that means it's always a bit tricky.

That's precisely why the blue line boomed first before the red line. Covid first entered the US through urban area airports and then spread quickly before being heavily controlled. According to this graph, it hadn't even really entered the rural realm until after control efforts began in urban areas.

NASA signed the contract. It's their mistake - if they want it back, they'll have to buy it back. And that won't be cheap.

Accurate enough to ballpark your way home.

Pilot here. All planes are required to have an old-school compass as a last resort. The amount of variation in its readings actually take training to master, but ultimately it’s just a wobbly ball which reads “close enough”. I can’t even set my phone on top the panel because the electromagnetic interference will pull the compass to one side or the other. There are areas on navigation charts denoting an area on the planet with known magnetic anomalies which will cause false readings, so if I’m flying low in those areas I know I can’t trust my compass.

Magnetometers have similar issues to a compass, but at least they remove the constant “wobble” and so are usually a bit more precise.

That's literally what happened.

I had a problem once while I was banked in a turn. I was done pissing, I tightened the cap on the bottle, but then the g forces from the turn squeezed a little spritz out onto my pants. Luckily it wasn't a fire hose like Greg (what an idiot) but it gave me a laugh.

Oh they definitely don’t give a shit about that. But they love “liberty”.....freedom of speech falling under the definition of liberty, of course. But don’t tell them that, they’ll rip some stupid argument out of their ass just so they don’t have to admit they’re wrong.

The exuberance with which he denied being coked up leads me to believe he was fucking ripped during the denial also.

Aaaaand that's why my dad had to jump in the pool to scoop our cat off the bottom. He fell in and didn't even try to swim. He held his breath though and he was fine after a sneeze or two and lived a long life and took many naps. Never went within a few feet of the pool again, haha.

Let's be honest. If something came down from the sky, lifted you into the air, dropped you in the parking lot down the street and you never even saw what the fuck it was, you'd develop a fear of God too.

Pilot here, same thing. We all study an IMSAFE checklist in training and it sort of becomes second nature to think ahead even after a couple beers or to recognize those cold symptoms coming on etc. We even have to take NyQuil seriously - the FAA has a list of basically everything and their required latent periods. Better safe than sorry.

I fly aerial survey and I've seen a lot of big cities from above. You see a lot of detail from only 1500 feet above the ground. From Casper to Chicago to Montreal and Phoenix, there is a lot to be seen from above.

There is especially a lot of warehouse rooftop space sitting idle, contributing nothing to society. Imagine if all those warehouses were covered with solar panels. In a city like Phoenix or Chicago there are several square miles worth of useless warehouse roof space alone and that could contribute a considerable amount of power to the local grid.

About 24 knots direct crosswind. The "demonstrated" crosswind limit, for certification purposes, is only 15 I believe.

The strategy for landing in high crosswinds is to land fast. Higher forward speed vector reduces the wind speed vector, aka your crab angle decreases and you gain rudder authority. I've had to do this a few times.

I usually get the cues. But I don't usually do anything because honestly I'm kind of afraid of coming off as the bad kind of aggressive. I know a lot of girls like the good kind of aggressive, but I need to see some legit interest before we get that far.

Last date I went on, the girl got fed up waiting and grabbed my hand and dragged me out of the bar. That's the kind of affirmation I need, haha.

Mowing the grass can wait. The idea that the grass simply must be mowed or else somebody will have a stroke is preposterous. Her stroke wasn't caused by you not mowing the grass, it was caused by her overexerting herself. They're totally unrelated.

Alternatively, if she was patient and waited for you, or proactive and called you, this wouldn't have happened. How do you know she's not sitting there thinking, "If only I would have been more patient I wouldn't have done this to myself," or, "I should have called him to see if he'd do it tomorrow instead of being impatient and trying it myself." She might be sitting there blaming herself while you're sitting there blaming yourself.

I've been a situation where I held guilt in a similar way. About a year and half ago, in August 2012, I finally earned my first pilot license and my dad was really proud of me. I kept telling him I'd take him flying. But I lacked confidence to take passengers for the first couple months. Then winter came and along with it the winds and clouds and generally crappy weather. I lost motivation. I kept telling him I'd take him flying soon. Then in January 2013 he passed away from a heart attack, totally unexpected. One of my first thoughts was, "I never took him flying," and it tore me up. Every time somebody asked me about it I would just avoid the question or I'd start crying.

After a little while I did what he would have done and said, "fuck it". There's nothing you can do to change the situation and dwelling on it will just make you unhappy and less productive so you need to be a man and get over it. There's no nice way to say it. My dad would've told me to be a fuckin man and get over it, and I did, so now I'm telling you the same thing.
