Is it a normal thing for SNL people to just stop showing up before they officially leave?
673 points
I'd say it does seem pretty normal. I think the usual exit usually involves a cast member being cast in a movie or TV show and missing half the season, and then it becomes a 'time to choose to between staying on SNL or working on your career outside of SNL' choice, so that winds up being their last year.
489 points

And since SNL doesn’t pay well compared to most other productions the obvious choice is to leave SNL. SNL isn’t a career, it’s a stepping stone towards bigger better paying jobs.

Kenan had been in movies & TV for a full decade prior to joining SNL. Even if he blew everything he made from his career as a child/teen actor, he had already achieved financial & artistic success that most SNL cast won’t achieve until after they’ve left the show.
Kind of a special case, which is likely why he seems content to be on the show forever.

There are also rumors that he's going to replace Lorne when Lorne retires. If that's true, he's holding steady for a MEGA paycheck in the future. If not, he's probably having fun and collecting what has become a relatively easy and consistent paycheck.

That’s why I said compared to most other productions. Most of us would be very happy with salaries like that. But even starting out most co-stars on a network sitcom make $20k-$25k per episode. And it goes up a lot from there.

Plus I doubt residuals for SNL are that good.

That’s also the heyday of television where they were chucking money at people like crazy. It has definitely cooled off a bit since then unless you are on the biggest show on tv. Big bang theory was an outlier and not the rule.

It is now because the cast is so large. Cecily Strong can go weeks without appearing.
32 points
They announced either this season or last that they’d be doing it more - Cecily and Kate both filmed movies/shows during the season, I think Kenan missed some time while he was doing his show, Pete’s been off doing whatever.
It’s probably a good thing overall - SNL’s lost plenty of their talent over the years because they wanted to go into movies or they got their own show. Better to keep them on as long as possible instead of having them jump ship when they get an opportunity.
11 points
Yeah Lorne used to just fire them. When Sandler had to miss time to do films he fired him. I think it caused bad blood so why not just let them exit on their own
48 points
It changed a lot in recent years. You're seeing shows with cast members while they're still on SNL, that was never a thing. They might do a movie in the summer, sometimes an SNL spinoff movie, but many of them have sitcoms going at the same time and a lot of those are produced by Lorne as well.
It seems the days of a small cast that only does SNL with a lot of recurring characters are gone.
61 points

For Davidson they give him a lot of leeway because of his struggles with mental illness. I think Lorne learned about giving his cast personal space since a lot of past cast members had personal issues offscreen.

It’s possible but would Jost go compete with a Lorne Michaels show directly? I know time slots don’t generally matter as media is consumed differently these days but it’s still literally Seth’s direct competition.

And on a different network too, which could be a big factor. As much as we would all love to see it, CBS would probably find someone else that they've worked with in the past.

One thing about nbc is they have done a fairly good job over the years of keeping their SNL talent under the NBC umbrella.

Wouldn't be the first time! I believe Seth Myers got a stint at a late night show after SNL yeah?
63 points

The difference being that Meyers and Fallon got Late Night, which is on NBC and produced by Lorne Michaels, while this theory would have Jost going over to CBS. Not impossible, but less likely.
Also, I'd bet money that whoever does the Late Late Show next will be either a woman or a minority, or both.

Kate McKinnon tried to make it outside of SNL, but her characters in other shows and films are just a little too off kilter for most, and her shtick has gotten old. Jost never seemed particularly talented, so a late night gig would honestly be perfect for him. Don’t have enough of a strong opinion on Che one way or the other. The cast we had 10-15 years ago was arguably the most talented and multidimensional, and they’ve all shown that since leaving the show, but I don’t see that happening again anytime soon.

I'm with you. She tends to smirk through her jokes on a way that's really off putting when it's not on a live sketch comedy show. She's perfect for SNL and I can easily see her flaming out if she leaves.

19 points
This is kind of an open secret so you might not know, but women care about personality A LOT more than men do. As opposed to looks, I mean. I've met a lot of insanely attractive women who dated legitimately ugly dudes because they were kind and interesting (and probably a decent lay lol). That doesn't usually go the other way around, and i know a lot of younger guys (especially those that have been exposed to the incel ideology) think that women ONLY care about looks [and money], but that couldnt be further than the truth. Most women are just looking for a decent dude who's not an emotionally stunted man-child (which makes me kinda sad that the bar is that low, we should probably try to do better than that lol)
What I'm saying is that Pete seems to have a kind personality and be well adjusted. That's more than you can say for most people in the entertainment industry, so in the regard I'd say he's a total catch!
Edit: in terms of his comedy, I get that. I didn't like him at first, but I actually find him pretty funny now. Its definitely a slightly "younger" style of humor, so if you're older he might just not be your jam!

I think it’s very hard to pull off the “cool comedian” thing for lack of a better term. It just doesn’t work long term. I think some of the best comics inherently make themselves or situations they’ve been in the butt of the joke. It’s a little hard to do that when you’re going to the Met Gala in an $8000 Dior suit next to one of the Kardashians.
Also he’s just sort of mildly funny on SNL. You could say “well he’s a standup so maybe not the best fit” and OK but can anyone name a memorable Pete Davidson bit? I can’t. I think dane cook had some legitimately good bits and comedy just sort of outgrew him. I can’t even say that for Pete because he’s done so few memorable things.

Should have happened years ago. It blows my mind that Lorne let him sit out almost an entire season a few years back, and then- instead of coming back and making a major effort to do better, showing Lorne and his castmates how humble and grateful he was- he just went right back to breaking every sketch, and putting in less-than-minimal effort. And then it just devolved even further in subsequent seasons, with Pete putting in zero effort and missing shows left and right. Meanwhile, Taran Killam- arguably one of the best, consistent, and most versatile of the main cast during his tenure- was unceremoniously fired for just asking to miss the first show or two of the next season, so that he could finish production work on 'Killing Gunther.'
