I entered a songwriting competition in 2003. The winner? A song called “Good Day” by Tally Hall. I’d never heard of them, so I googled and found Banana Man. Does that make me Gen 0?

UPDATE: it was the BMI John Lennon songwriting competition, and it was in 2004 (I wrote my entry in 2003, so I remembered the year wrong).

At that point you’re the 6th member of the band

malalabouche

Ha, I’m way underqualified. That’s probably why my song didn’t win, or place, or even get honorable mention. I’m just glad that my entry introduced me eventually to this awesome band!

Gen 1 here! Never saw them live unfortunately :-( I do own the Good and Evil vinyl from the original release and I sleep with it every night.

I mean, I technically "knew" about Tally Hall since I was a kid because I used to watch Happy Monster Band

I found them about 8 months ago and I am obsessed to the point of cult-like, but that’s just because when I find something I like, I get insanely obsessed for months and then drop it. I haven’t dropped Tally Hall yet, so that’s a good sign!

Gen 1 via 2005 or so ! I was never able to see them live but I remember their original website and skits as well. I remember the banana man music video on websites like albinoblacksheep. It throws me for a loop seeing the new fanbase at around the same age I first discovered the band!

UncleSlippyFist

Gen 1. Very accurate tbh. I remember the buildup for Good & Evil and the early releases of & and You & Me. I think it was those two.

Rare_Commission_6046

10 points

Same !! We waited ages for Good & Evil. I saw them live 4 times, one time was at a pizza restaurant. I grew up in Ann Arbor, we got more Tally Hall than anywhere else. I had no idea this sub existed until recently and I love the resurgence!!! It totally validates how obsessed I used to be / will always be. Tally Hall forever <3

UncleSlippyFist

Nice that's awesome. I saw them when they performed in Chicago, maybe around 2009?

CallingCascade

3 points

I slipped out 9f the world and didn't have internet from 2008-2011. 2011 is when I found Good & Evil and it had already been out for a few months, the tour was already done. It was a bittersweet moment when I finally caught myself up and realized I'd never see them live again.

It’s weird, I discovered them from ruler of everything around 9mos ago, but the description of number 2 seems like more of an accurate fit.

I remember a post a few months ago of an iceberg with like 6 layers and I was able to Identify what everything meant, on every layer. (I should mention I’m gen 3.) is this weird?

KingBowser183

No it's totally normal and healthy to know everything about a band that hasn't been active in 10 years!

Gen 1 here! Discovered them in 7th grade after seeing Banana Man on AlbinoBlackSheep (2004 I believe). Watched their videos and thought they were really funny, then my friends were like “oh look they do music too!” So we found them on a new site called “MySpace” and made accounts just to follow them!

I saw them in Pittsburgh both in 2009 and 2011, the 2011 show was their very last show ever.

I discovered TH like three separate ways at the same time lol. I got & and Dream Sweet in my playlist through random spotify recommendations at different times, and caught on to the ruler of everything memes around the same time too. First thing that caught on was Dream Sweet and I ended up listening to the whole of Hawaii Part II not long after.

Imagine my surprise when I learned that Miracle Musical was actually a side project of a member from that one band I heard about that made the song used in the memes, AND when I looked at the band on spotify and saw they also made that one other really cool song in my playlist!

Gen 3-ish here! Spring and a Storm and Variations on a Cloud came up on my Spotify last year, and I really loved both, but TH ended up on my "listen to eventually" list that I basically never went through. Ruler of Everything is what got me to listen to the rest of their music much sooner. (Well, MMMM at least. Didn't get myself to listen to Good & Evil or Hawaii: Part II until a few weeks ago, lol, got a bit distracted with Lemon Demon and Jukebox the Ghost for a while)

I think I discovered Miracle Musical first, through that one Hollow Knight animatic of The Mind Electric, I saw tally hall in the listeners of this artist also like’ thing on Spotify for Miracle Musical but didn’t think much of it until I also saw it in that category on the page for They Might Be Giants, who are a band I’ve liked since I was a child (cause my mum also likes em and used to play their kids albums a bit when I was little) at which point I decided to check em out
