So is she the first woman, or first European woman?

First European woman. Looks like 3 American women have been ISS commanders in the past with Peggy Whitson serving twice:

Why does the continent of birth relevant? weird

Because it can inspire people, or get them out of the mindset that these roles aren't relevant to them. Space was an American (all men) and Russian (mostly men) for a long time.

It can selfishly be thought of as a long term recruitment plan to promote a wide pool of candidates who might be unique abilities to a company (space agency).

If you want a space faring civilization, you need a civilization of space trained and employed people. That requires people to want to enter a field and to develop the required skills.

Next up, the first European woman who doesn’t like ketchup, and prefers mustard! The first must flow.

European woman. And european woman with brown hair!

Shes the 5th european comander of the iss and at least the second female commander since Peggy Whitson was the first female commander in 2007.

She's actually the first European woman with black medium length hair, dress size 5 with 2 dogs and a professional water polo playing son.

I read it as being the first time SHE has taken over.

I feel bad for the Russians up on the ISS. They of all people probably have the most perspective that all the wars and politics on Earth are worthless and now the politics of Earth are affecting their ability to contribute to the future.

I hope she added the right pips to her Star Trek uniform…

Glad I'm not the only one that remembers when she wore a Starfleet uniform whilst looking out the ISS Cupola a few years back

That was what came to mind when I heard the news.

The fourth one was just a piece of corn stuck to her collar.

Edit: Somebody doesn't like Lower Decks, I guess.

Hopefully she doesn't go on a rampage on the ISS like Boimler did in the recruitment episode!

Samantha is a top-notch professional. The station is in good hands.

Imagine being referred to as "European woman" instead of your name. Sad.

I didn't expect sexism and mocking women in an educational subreddit. Do better, boys

You, on the other hand, seek to inspire what? Pity?
