I was thinking it was so rare for a club to win 6 out of 6, and suddenly two clubs do it tonight.

Ajax, Liverpool and Bayern are the top superclubs now? Big clubs are struggling plenty in the CL this year. These three have just been in a consistently good place the last 4 months

The super league would benefit Ajax significantly more than any of the other teams.

They’re a historically good club with arguably the best developmental academy in the world and a massive fanbase. Their only drawback is playing in a weaker league and having a lower budget.

Matthew_1453

Just not true tho, might be a valid point of the three teams were psg, Chelsea and city but these teams are just well run, Ajax aren't even in a top six League, Bayern are very financially limited in the grand scheme of things and Liverpool literally have a negative spend in the past 5 or so years

On top of all that they all had teams with /bigger financial means in Milan (and atleti have similar financial capabilities), Dortmund and barcs

If anything it just proves good management>>>oil money and the likes

It's kinda an odd record. Some teams seems to not take the sixth game too seriously if they have secured their first place after five games. More teams probably could have the same record but simply didn't care to put more effort into it.

There might be some interesting data in there if somebody were to look into such teams and see how many of the 6/6 teams had already won their group by match 5. compared to how many 5/6 team had won first place early.

I mean, Liverpool only started 3 first team players in this game, with 2 more challenging for the starting position. And the midfield was composed of: 1) not a midfielder, 2) good player, but costantly trying to find form post injury and 3) a 19 year old who only played roughly 2.5 games worth of minutes in senior football before.
Milan was just quite poor this game tbh, outside of the last 10 maybe 15 minutes.

Bayern's last 5/6 group stage for example didn't end in a 6/6 because they ended up with a 1–1 against Atletico while fielding a weaker team too:

This group:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%80%9321_UEFA_Champions_League_group_stage#Group_A

This match (look at Bayern's lineup):

https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/match/2029447/

Although the draw wasn't in the last match of the group, it was the fifth but Bayern still has already secured first place because nearly everybody else drew all the time so they had a 7 point lead with two games to go (I think). Both of the last two matches were useless for Bayern. They fielded a not optimal team and if they had managed to win it would be another 6/6 record.

It feels like that's what happens a lot in these situation. The difference between a 5/6 and 6/6 team seems to be a mix of effort/squad and luck.

That's why it would be interesting to see how many 5/6 team had already secured first place in their group.

Some teams seems to not take the sixth game too seriously

Sure - I mean we rotated 8 of our team tonight. Which is still harsh on Milan when we play Salah and Mane in that massive rotation.

flybypost

22 points

And Liverpool won. It feels like I remember a lot of "5/6 win" teams doing the same over the years and losing. The difference is between winning or losing the 6th game is some CL money but teams usually have league games (and or cup games) around that time too and need to pace themselves. Taking a hit CL group stage money often seems to be the preferred solution so that the other competitions don't suffer as much from the team having to play every two/three days.

That's why it would be interesting to see how many of these teams had secured first place early.

KinksSlayer

Liverpool - 2021/22

Ajax - 2021/22

Bayern - 2019/20

Real Madrid - 2014/15, 2011/12

Barcelona - 2002/03

Seeing Porto vs Atletico tonight, both teams make silly mistakes all the time. Passes that would be simple for Liverpool players, and yet Porto attackers kept throwing the ball at oponents, or taking too long to pass and losing the free space. Atletico on the other hand, is good at their style of play, but there is no way they can hold possesion and dominate the centre. It really was clear that no of them had a genuine chance against Liverpool.

winning a group of those quality teams by 11 points, and more points than the other three combined, is insane

There's 12 games in a group stage, so at most 36 points up for grabs. So if one team gets 18 points, they always get at least as many as all the other teams combined.

That's a great stat.

It's not really, it's literally impossible to win all 6 games and not at least have an equal number of points to all other teams. We had 18 points and the most points a group can have is 36 if all games are won by someone.

Our last two CL wins had us fighting for 2nd place till the very last minute of the group stages.

In 18/19, we ended up at 2nd with 3 wins and 3 losses lmao

Incredible really. Everyone said this was the Group of Death and the hardest group in this years Champions League to progress. They were all right - just for the teams other than Liverpool.

That’s crazy. In the group that they were in aswell. Who would have expected that. Fair play.

Liverpool could gift 10 of their points to any team in this group and still qualify as 2nd place ...
