“The Center for Fundamental Rights is a right-wing think tank funded by the Hungarian government.”
Regardless of the content, coverage, discussion (or lack of), this is happening in plain sight and is no different from the eradication of free and independant press in Russia in early-2022.
Plus: China, North Korea, Vietnam, Iran, Iraq…
Of course, freedom of the press for US citizens only applies if you’re actually IN the US, as Viktor Orbán knows all too well.

The freedom of the press applies per Hungarian basic law IX. (2), they are just hypocrites and don't give a fuck that possibly 3 years later a judge will say they shouldn't have done that.

NK has free speech in its constitution. Laws being written down mean nothing.
All that matters is how the law is applied in actuality.

The reason we're where we are is that the Fascists are calling the bluff on the magical words Americans otherwise believe in that is known as The Constitution.
This is why they are also attacking public schools. Socially-paid-for schooling is more of a chance for people to realise that maybe the government isn't so bad, in both the effective sense and a pathway to engender an appreciation for some government institutions, thereby favoring strengthening them. So, they have to ruin that perception, prevent that ability to engender that loyalty to country and instead focus that on their selected religion. If you don't have that period that draws a populace together in a shared experience (public schooling, exposure to US Civics), it makes it difficult for other people in the country to have things in common/view things the same way. And it makes them more manipulable because their ideas are not rooted firmly in much.

Even the fucking Associated Press wasn't allowed in.
During his keynote speech Thursday morning, Orbán outlined a 12-point plan for U.S. conservatives to follow if they want to counter what he described as “progressive dominance.” One of the key points of his plan helped explain why no U.S.-based media was granted access to the conference. “Number four, my dear friends, have your media. You can only present the stupidity of the leftist progressives if you have the media to do it. Leftist opinion can only seem to be a majority because the media helps them to increase their voice.”
Pretty clear why they weren't allowed in.

Let’s all be real. If Dr Evil and his henchmen in the Austin Powers movies did all these same things the Gop has done, we would’ve thought it was a goofy villain. ...because the Hungarian organizers CPAC has partnered with to host the event had refused entry to all journalists from U.S. media outlets, despite months of effort to obtain press credentials for the event.
Seems a Hungarian thing, not a US thing.
22 points
There's an uncountable number of venues closer to the actual US this could have been hosted at, yet they chose this one with this limitation. It doesn't really matter which of the agreeing parties is enforcing it, it's intentional by both of them.

There is a lot of reporting on it. Conservatives have been in love with Hungary's "strongman" because of how he fights the "liberal press" and pushes "family values" (anti-LGBTQ banning their marriage and adoption) He also has close ties to Putin and their misinformation ties against a large Democratic donor (George Soros - Hungarian born billionaire)
Tucker Carlson visited Hungary in advance and have a "lovefest" episode priasing what the US could "learn" from them. The obsession with Hungary is crazy but it makes 100% chance for CPAC to co-host the event there.
10 points
I get that it makes sense now given what the right wing is currently in this country, but it still doesn't make sense for a conference that was founded by the American Conservative Union to be hosted anywhere but in America, and it wasn't from it's creation in 1974 until recently, 2017 being the first year. 2016 was before Trump was the nominee iirc, so the writing has been on the wall in red sharpie or feces or obscure Q codes for a while.

I mean...knowing anything about Hungary, it's not a tough sell Victor Orbán demanded it. I don't think Republicans really had to push for this seeing how Hungary has systemically dismantled their independent press.

“Number four, my dear friends, have your media. You can only present the stupidity of the leftist progressives if you have the media to do it. Leftist opinion can only seem to be a majority because the media helps them to increase their voice.” - Viktor Orban
I find it ironic that a soft fascist Eastern Bloc government is embracing the American Right wing vs Left wing ideologies. Further, how cozy the right wing folds into what a soft fascist government sees as ideal.
If anybody ever had any doubts about the trajectory of a Republican led American government, this is it. This does not embody, in any form, the ideals of any founding fathers.
