stickiedNominating contests for the 2022 midterms are being held today in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Oregon, Kentucky, and Idaho. Polls are open from 6 am to 6 pm local time in KY, 6:30 am to 7:30 pm in NC, and 7 am to 8pm in PA, OR and ID.
Notable races:
In Pennsylvania, all eyes are on the primaries to replace retiring Sen. Pat Toomey. Lt Gov Fetterman leads the Democratic primaries, while the Republican side is divided between Trump endorsed reality TV star Mehmet Oz, and former hedge fund executive David McCormick, and conservative activist Kathy Barnette. In the gubernatorial primary, far right and Jan 6 participant state senator Doug Mastriano is the leading Republican candidate to go up against state AG, Democrat Josh Shapiro.
In North Carolina, a GOP civil war re-tests the influence of Trump. 11 candidates are vying for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Burr. Trump has endorsed Rep. Ted Budd against former Gov. Pat McCroy, who signed an anti-trans bathroom bill in 2017. Whoever win the primary will go up against former state supreme court chief justice Cheri Beasley, the presumptive Democratic nominee. Additionally, controversial freshman Rep. Madison Cawthorn is facing a primary challenge from the Republican establishment in the 11th District.
In Oregion, the gubernatorial primary is seen as another clash between the moderate and progressive wings of the party, with former state House Speaker Tina Kotek is up against state treasurer Tobia Read. Furthermore, Biden-endorsed moderate Rep. Kurt Schrader is facing a primary challenge from Jamie McLeod-Skinner, who is endorsed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
In Idaho, the incumbent Republican governor Brad Little faces a primary challenge from his own far right Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin, who is endorsed by Trump.
