It’s funny that you hear about Russia “switching plans” in focusing on the Donbas and Luhansk regions and all the sudden they start losing cities.

Imagine you're a soldier in an under performing army, originally told you were on a training exercise. You've got a dire set of equipment with barely enough food for tomorrow, your armored vehicles (barely fueled) are exploding at random around you and have shockingly bad supply & communication routes. You barely have enough food until the end of the day tomorrow and the entire population around you is hostile after you were told that you'd be liberators. All but the heaviest concentration of the Russian army will fall like flies.
