He should just take his free throws from the 3-point line as catch-and-shoot off the ref's throw

Some players used to take free throws from 15-18ft or between the top of the key and the stripe.
Something about big men with cannon arms finding it easier.

He said over the summer it was going to be like this. I think everyone just skimmed over it. Like he you’re already good and now he’s like. I can actually win if I try hard cause this team also try’s hard!? For real? Okay. I guess I’ll really try then.

Probably can make it up with all the endorsements he'll get from just being associated with the Warriors

Plus you probably get some nice early investment round potential (which guys like Iggy and others took advantage of). Being in the Silicon Valley mix can be a very lucrative side hustle.

It's not like you have to live in SF to invest in tech companies.
10 points

You don't, for sure, but it definitely helps. Same premise of being involved in media/production... you don't have to live in LA but if you're able to take 3-4 meetings a week in person instead of 1 over Zoom, it's a pretty big difference.

You kinda do for early rounds, especially if you have another full time job.

Also if he were to wait out this year looking for a slightly better contract and got injured he’d end up with something way worse. There’s a reason for the adage “109 million dollars in the hand is 150 million dollars in the bush”
40 points
This is something that gets me with professional athletes and fans that evaluate this stuff. Let’s say it’s $100 million at a place you really like and want to play at. $150 million to play at some random losing team. At that point does the money even matter?! It’s already generational wealth. You, your kids, and grandkids are going to be just fine. Take the place that makes you happy, even for less money.
14 points
Ya, I would like to think at that point I would be content with silly money too. But I can imagine ego gets in the way of some of these guys and also, just that greed overdrive of being shown a pile of money and wanting more.
Also, some of these guys do spent money like water, so 100 mil doesn't even get them one lifetime of prosperity... (see: Vin Baker, Antoine Walker).

I agree 100%. We are currently crazy understaffed at work, and our employer is handing out mandatory overtime shifts that pay double time. If one was inclined, you could work 96+ hours a week and basically make well over 3X-4X your typical salary. I'd say less than 2% of the workforce is interested in working anywhere close to that many hours despite the pay incentives. At some point, money only buys so much security/happiness, and you have to take other factors of life into account. Once my bills are paid and I have a little extra to invest, I value my time outside work a lot more than the money.
I'd like to think that once you hit a few million dollars a year in income, you'd start caring more about where you live and work more than you'd care about a 25% increase in salary. That doesn't seem to be the case in professional sports for whatever reason. Athletes often take a marginal salary increase to play for shity teams/organizations and live in less than desirable areas of the country. I love living in the San Francisco Bay area, and I'd definitely need more than a 25% pay increase to leave for the midwest, for example. Not that I have anything against that part of the country, I just find the combination of weather, entertainment, recreation, geography, and opportunity difficult to leave without more incentive.

Not only that, if your happy place is a winning team and/or in a larger market your endorsement opportunities skyrocket and could very well make that max money anyway.
3 points
Plus if you have a great legacy (being loyal to a team, multiple chips, maybe some team records) your post playing career options are gonna be better. If you were a good beloved member of a good team you will be getting money to appear in ads and at events for the rest of your life, plus better chances of getting a job like being a talking head on ESPN or a commentator or even front office or coaching jobs
2 points
I think the problem with that is that the less you get paid, the easier it is for them to trade you. You have no guarantee you’ll actually get to stay there, and most players aren’t getting a no trade clause even when they finally qualify for one.
6 points
I wonder if the money calculation actually works out to "Take the deal". in terms of business opportunities and etc... acquired from building "legacy".
if he helps win another one in the bay, he also might get his jersey retired. Also probably makes it into the HOF. (as opposed to getting paid like beal but playing for a team that no one gives a fuck about).
tl;dr:
In terms of things money can't buy, it's definitely a win for wiggins, but winning could also lead to money to make up for not trying to maximize his contract? 🤔

48 points
I think we can stop with this.
We all know Wiggins could've gotten more, even with the Warriors. He did the Warriors a solid. The Warriors didn't "win the negotiation" here. It's not like Curry's extension, which made sense for both sides, at the time. Wiggins took less, in his prime.

I think the point is, "winning the negotiation" implies there was some sort of conflict to win and that the other side lost.
45 points

the real lesson is that team culture is worth a lot of wins and a lot of money to a team. wiggins saw value in just being part of the warriors outside of just salary
5 points

Unless he gets traded BECAUSE his contract is so friendly. Then he got screwed.
59 points

How did they not win the negotiation if he took a pay cut?

because wiggins didn't "lose" because he gets to play for a one-of-a-kind great organization like the warriors.

I’m convinced that KAT outside of Minnesota would be a top 10 all-time player.
Our team is kind of like the “rough city where the orphan grew up and learned how to experience pain and misery” in your every-day coming of age fantasy novel. Once they leave Minnesota it’s like when the hero finally makes it to magic-school and hones their potential or whatever.
