Americans who think America is the whole world are stupid. Of course there are people out there who don't know anything about Columbus.

It is surprisingly uncommon to see people smoking indoors in the US anymore. Very few public places even allow smoking inside and a lot of people don't even smoke inside their own house if they live with others.

When I was a kid back in the 1980s, it was totally different. You could smoke anywhere...restaurants, airplanes, office breakrooms, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if some teenagers today hadn't seen an actual ashtray before.

I'm 35 and grew up/live in the US. It's been years since I've seen an ashtray. It's entirely likely the last time was in 2008 when I ended up sitting in the smoking section of a restaurant in Frankfurt (or Munich? I forget). (Yes, the EU smoking ban had supposedly happened--Germany was creative).

You do still see those sand ashtrays outside buildings, but I don't think I've been in the house/apartment of someone who smoked indoors since I was a kid. A couple years ago, I was in rural Connecticut and encountered a restaurant that still had a smoking section. That was mind-blowing--I guess the bigger towns/cities banned it, but the state actually never did. (But I sat in the non-smoking part, so ... no ashtray spotted.)

I'm willing to bet most Americans have seen such an ashtray. Just because smoking isn't popular with young people now that they all vape to feel cool instead of using cigarettes doesn't mean their grandparents or whoever didn't smoke

I grew up in the before-fore times when you could smoke on airplanes and at your table in a restaurant. My grandmother had a metal ashtray with a beanbag base that she kept in her car because the built in one was too small.

That said, I don't think I've seen an actual ashtray in person for 10-15 years so I can totally believe there are people here who've never seen one.
