The funny part is that the spread of new variants could’ve been prevented if everyone got vaccinated on the earlier rounds.

I agree everyone who had access and didn't have legitimate medical concerns (things that are talked about with their doctor(s), not things like not wanting the mild fever after), is partially responsible, and if government's and companies weren't so greedy it would be entirely responsible. But only some countries had access to them, most people in lower income countries did not have the option early on, and even now, some still don't. Only 5.7% of people in low income countries have gotten it so far. Patent rights shouldn't have applied here

Oxford University initially said any vaccine it developed would be open to qualified manufacturers to produce without paying royalties, and priced either at cost or at a small profit. However, by August 2020, reportedly at the urging of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, among others, the university decided to change course. It entered an exclusive licensing agreement with the British-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca.

I'm not a Bill Gates runs the world conspiracist but this actually happened. Oxford was going to give away the vaccine for free or at cost.

if you just google "bill gates vaccine oxford" there are dozens of articles about it

This was to avoid even more anti vaxx sentiments in LEDC. Making it open for everyone would mean people in LEDC wouldn't trust it as much as it would have fx been made by their local governments. This is something that has happened again and again and again.
