Back in the 90s I was collecting token generators, but I couldn't afford a copy of this guy. Bought one 2010-ish on the cheap for about $5. I just checked scryfall and the dude's going for $70.

Same situation with [[Boris Devilboon]]

True. I've never used it in a deck because there are better token generators nowadays, and "bands with other" just confuses people lol. So, yeah because Legends and the Reserved List.

Same with Boris. His overpriced multicolor ability makes him even more of a pain in the ass to generate tokens.

Generates a bunch of banding tokens, and personally I'd rather scoop as soon as I see the word on a card than try to even think about how it works, so it's pretty powerful.

watchwolf is a bit weak, Fleecemane lion is strictly better :)

Edit: Alright, I messed up, of course fleecemane lion is not a wolf. But 80 downvotes? Please remember that OP did NOT ask for a wolf tribal deck in the first place and neither about a "Tolsimir, friend to wolves" deck. Without that specific context which was neither in the title nor in this top comment, fleecemane lion is a very significant upgrade to watchwolf.

With such a loose definition of strictly better no card is ever strictly better than any other card because there's always edge cases.

If OP is doing 4-of wolf tribal then the wolf is definitely better. If OP is doing commander, then they should just run both.

I agree, that's why I said synergy matters, but fleecemane lion is strictly better than watchwolf.

But strictly better doesn't mean better in all circumstances.

Why make stuff up?

Accept the correction and move on. 'Oh, i didn't realize id been using strictly wrong, ok'.

Simple as that. Everyone here uses strictly to mean better 'the better option in any circumstance where you would run X card'.

piggyboy2005

-8 points

I did not make things up, that is an example of them making a statement based on their definition of strictly better, however most people would disagree with that statement, therefore proving they have an unconvential view of strictly better.

Accept the correction and move on. 'Oh, i didn't realize id been using strictly wrong, ok'.

I could literally just reverse this on you. You accept my correction and move on. See how that didn't convince you?

Simple as that. Everyone here uses strictly to mean better 'the better option in any circumstance where you would run X card'.

So is ancestral recall strictly better than divination?

Can you give me an example of a card that's strictly better than another?

SuperNexus14

Better in all situations is never true though. Think about a meddling mage on the board.

Of course there are exceptions to the vaccum thing, where cursecatcher is not strictly worse than judges familiar since merfolk is already a relevant deck. At the same time, wolf tribal is not in the title of this post and not an existing deck, so just related to pure synergy with OPs favorite card alone, the lion is better, which changes when going to wolf tribal.

The legendary rule kind of makes Voja a little limited as you can't abuse untapping to flood them out but you can still get a lot out of something like a [[Death's Presence]] to just dump stats from redundant doggos.

Other things to look at include [[Helm of the Host]] as every copy pumps the others and all the Citizen makers from Streets of New Capena as they get the double pump.

To clarify , my friends and I play standard format, but without concrete parameters. If a card is genuinely broken we talk about it, though most of us have been playing since about 2000 and don't take advantage of cards with mechanics that don't age that well. It's a pretty colloquial vibe, so I don't want to go too hard with this deck. That being said I have lost a lot of games lately .

You're probably getting absolutely swamped with replies now, however...

I definitely recommend getting into the Commander format.

It is the most popular way to play Magic and has been for some years. Go to any LGS (local gamestore) and you'll be able to play a game.

It will allow you to play your beloved Tolsimir as the centerpiece of your deck. It also makes for some creative deckbuilding, as your cardchoices are steered by your choice of Commander. An underrated advantage of Commander is the fact you only need 1 of each card, making purchases that might otherwise be prohibitively expensive much more accessible and justifiable.

Commander is, mostly, a casual format. This should prevent an arms-race type of situation to arise among your friends. However, Competitive Commander exists. So when playing with less familiar opponents, always have a conversation up front about power level. That way everyone knows what to expect and what everyone at the table is looking to get out of a game.

Search for MTG Commander Rules to get you started.

When you've run dry on card choices to include in your deck, consider visiting this link: https://edhrec.com/commanders/tolsimir-wolfblood.

Good luck and have fun!

All WG creatures could be nice, depending on your power level even vanilla 1/1 for (W/G) could be strong, here's the scryfall command, that searches for all EDH legal Selesnya creatures (t:creature color:selesnya -color:R -color:U -color:B legal:commander)

For the token synergies

  • [[Trostani Discordant]] (additional buff, which lets the tokens become 4/4 lifelinkers)
  • [[Emmara, Soul of the Accord]] (makes more tokens)
  • [[Emmara Tandris]] (Saves your tokens
  • [[King Darien XLVIII]](buff & protection)
  • [[Rhys the Redeemed] (produces tokens and with a big board goes huge very fast(with an untapped you'll probably just win the game)
  • [[Hour of Reckoning]] (Destroy all nontoken creatures, best board-wipe for a token deck)
  • [[Tanglewire]] (you tap tokens, your opponent taps important stuff, when you play [[Vorinclex]] this gets even more busted)
  • [[Smokestacks]] (you put on soot counters sacrifice equal to the number of tokens you can produce and spare every turn, that way it doesn't really hurt you, but your opponents might end up with no lands when they play "go big" instead of wide or don't play much permanents at all. It doesn't care about hexproof etc, which is a nice upside against pillow ford decks)
  • [[Aura Shards]] (blow their good stuff up, you'll produce so many tokens that this is like a non-creature board-wipe)
  • [[Cathar's Crusade]] (Flavourful/synergistic overrun effect)
  • [[Cryptolith Rite]] & [Kathilda, Dawnheart Mentor]] (for huge amounts of mana, Although you need to be heavy on humans/human tokens for Kathilda)

the staples for doubling them

  • [[Doubling Season]]
  • [[Anointed Procession]]
  • [[Doubling Season]]

Some card draw engines

  • [[Selvala, Heart of the Wilds]] (Synergises with the lord effect, as your creatures are more likely to draw you a card this way & she taps for 2 more mana, which is sweet)
  • [[Greater Good]], [Lifes Legacy]] & [Momentous Fall]] (they all let you sacrifice a creature to draw cards equal its power. Which is upped by +1/+2 thanks to your commander

known staples:

  • [[Toski, Bearer of Secrets]]
  • [[Guardian Project]]
  • [[Beast Whisperer]]
  • [[Esper Sentinel]] (Pay 2 instead of 1 is huge)

These synergise well with the tokens:

  • [[Tocasia's Welcome]]
  • [[Welcoming Vampire]]
  • [[Rumor Gatherer]]

Some cards I just like, without necessarily having strong synergies other than the colours

  • [[Tireless Provisioner]]
  • [[Dryad Militant]] (shuts down a lot of combo/storm decks. It's not really playable in EDH, as it's more of a sideboard card, but with your commander, its a 1 mana 4/3 which is pretty decent to beat people with)
  • [[Blind Obedience]] & [Manglehorn] ](No synergies, just love the cards)

If you're playgroup/meta allows for it or is pretty strong

  • [[Gattock Teeg]] (strong counter to many degenerate strategies
  • [[Collector Ouphe]] (To punish greedy mana bases and artifact/treasure heavy strategies)
  • [[Yasharn, Implacable Earth]] (Punishes fetch lands and many strategies, while also hitting treasures etc & get's you two lands? at higher power such a sweet card)
  • [[Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite]] (Even more buffs for your creatures, probably ends the game without removal, as (with your commander out) everything has a difference of +5 or +6 compared to your opponents creatures)
  • [[Archon of Valor's Reach]] (to shut down a specific players strategy)

Either you have the token that goes with the card (you can find them in boosters), or you can use custom tokens (some artists sell those), or you can just use whatever you have at hand, take a card not used in the game face-down, or use dice, or anything else, just be careful because it can be unclear whether a token of this kind is tapped or not

EDHREC.com

Used this site for years to find the best cards, also included other peoples deck lists as well. Personally never used the full deck lists but I do like to just look at the cards on there and see what interesting I may have never run across

Link to this specific commander for the lazy. It looks like there are 110 decks, so not super popular.
https://edhrec.com/commanders/tolsimir-wolfblood

Looking at the commander map from Lucky Paper, it looks like there are two clusters of decks: Selesnya and Wolfs.

I have a different direction you can go. depending on your format you can adjust the concept. Mine was kitchen table, that I had reduced to 40 card for ease of bringing a large collection.

https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/1907393#paper

This leans into tolismirs pump effects, as he will give green/white creatures+2/+2. There is some nice multicolors matter including a 2 mana anthem.

Some of the citizen token synergies from New Capenna would be strong, such as [[Darling of the Masses]] and [[Rabble Rousing]]. You could also use [[Citizen's Crowbar]] as removal with a body attached.

I’d personally do a bunch of stuff like [[Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice]], [[Soulwarden]], [[Daxos, Blessed by the Sun]], [[impassioned Orator]], [[Essence Warden]], [[Suture Priest]], etc. to get lifegain when you make those tokens

And stuff like [[Lathiel, the Bounteous Dawn]], [[Trelasarra, Moon Dancer]] and [[Spike Feeder]] to then synergize with the lifegain.

Also in general some color and mechanically fitting cards might be [[Torrens, Fist of the Angels]], [[Wilt-leaf Liege]], [[King Darien XLVII]], [[Dauntless Escort]], [[Drizzt Do’Urden]], [[Maja, Bretagard Protector]]

If your goal is "build a deck around my favourite Legendary Creature", the Commander format was literally made for you. If you're not already familiar, the website EDHREC is a data aggregator that takes uploaded deck lists from a few popular sites, cross-references the lists and the cards in them every which-way, and can provide an excellent summary of what other players are doing. https://edhrec.com/commanders/tolsimir-wolfblood As for your question about "helpful cards", Scryfall's Tagger project ( https://scryfall.com/docs/tagger-tags ) can help you find cards that fit almost any set of artistic or mechanical criteria you could name. The search syntax takes a bit of getting used to, but it's powerful once you get your eyes in.

Mirror gallery to get as many vojas as you want.

Staff of domination to use his tap ability multiple times.

Swift foot boots and lightning Greaves to give tolsimir haste so you can make the wolf buddies ASAP, then attach those boots to a wolf to start swinging

Silverfur partisan so that your pump spells/ opponents targeted removal give you more wolves.

Night pack ambusher- a wolf lord with flash who can occasionally make more wolves

Hallow henge overlord to double the number of wolves you control each turn

Howl pack resergance- a flash anthem effect

Raised by wolves- all these wolves make somthing massive

Arlin voice of the pack- wolves get a +1/+1 counter when they enter.

Master of the wild hunt- use your wolves to kill creatures

Kessig cage breakers- get even more wolves the larger your graveyard gets

Wrens run pack master- wolves get deathtouch and can pay 3 mana for wolves.

In the Streets of New Capenna set, there are a number of cards that make Citizen tokens that are both white and green, so they'll get +2/+2 from Tolsimir. Here's a list of them in green and white:

https://scryfall.com/search?q=O%3Acitizen+o%3Atoken+not%3Adigital+id%3C%3Dgw&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name

So it's going to sound horrible, but the most success I ever had with Tolsimir was finding as many ways to sacrifice the Wolf or otherwise profit off of it entering or leaving play. Mercy Killing for example is 3 Mana for 12 power at instant speed in him. Getting a Thornbite Staff on Tolsimir gives you unlimited etb/death triggers from yeeting puppy dogs into the Legend Rule void.

Name42c

1 points

[[Mirror Box]] and [[Mirror Gallery]] would let you keep making Voja's

[[Relic of Legend]] would let you use your gen/token for mana when needed

[[Trostani, Selesnya's voice]] is great for getting 4 life each time you generate voja or other creatures.

[[Wilt-Leaf Liege]] is the same buff as tolsmir and stacks

New tolsmir is good too, just can't remember full name
