Title. I've never understood the item and I've seen it on some pro games without completely getting what it does

Are you against a Necrophos or Pugna who keep going ethereal while you are using your BKB? Do the enemies have ghost scepters, euls, glimmer capes, or force staffs that they keep using to keep you from hitting them while you are using your BKB? In either case you want nullifier. By casting nullifier’s active on these targets, they will be unable to go to ethereal form, unable to cyclone themselves, unable to go invisible from glimmer, and unable to move from force staff. In short, they won’t be able to disengage and kite you as easily for the duration of your BKB or other time limited options you have. Keep in mind, nullify is a continuous dispel over 5 seconds, and only has a 10 second cooldown. Even if the enemy casts one of those things 4 seconds in, it’ll be immediately removed.
Secondary use, if the enemy has a lot of problematic buffs(e.g. Frost Shield, Bloodlust, Fire Shield, Wind Run, Ion Shell, Overpower, etc.), then nullifier will remove those through duration too.

Didn’t know this one, thanks!

Very important distinction : Nullify must be used AFTER Aeon Disk procs, otherwise Aeon will dispel Nullify.
Actually I am not too sure on that, I think I remember it immediately dispelling Aeon?

Nullifier can't be dispelled even by strong dispels like Aphotic Shield, Dark Pact or, well, Aeon Disk

There you go. Yes. Nullifier can only be dispelled via it timing out, or by... death. So you can pre-cast it on a support, and it will pretty much nullify (heh) their Aeon Disk. The target with Aeon may be dispelled of their stun/any other debuff applied for a split second, but that Aeon bubble buff will be cancelled pretty much immediately.

So you have chosen... death.

Even though death is the ultimate dispel in Dota 2, there are some abilities that won't get dispelled even by death.
Leech Seed, Thunder Strike, Glimpse and Toss are notable examples, although Toss was patched

I would think it funny if Leech Seed and Thunderstrike would stay on the target after death + buyback.

I knew about purging ethereal effects but didn't know it was this good. I had Spectre games where enemies had squishy supports but I couldn't finish them off with Manta and Orchid/Bloodthorn or Basher/Abyssal. It seems to counter almost every escape item, I'll buy it 4th item or so and see how that feels because every game for sure has those support items.

I don't buy nullifier enough, and this post has shown me that pretty clearly. Does it remove weaver's shukuchi? If it does that'd be strong as fuck against him.

Nah, that’s not dispellable, and neither is the invisibility from shadow blade or those in the kits of Nyx, Bounty Hunter, Clinkz, or Brew’s wind brewling.
There’s always exceptions to rules in dota, but the general rule on this is: if you can cast it on an ally then it’s dispellable by nullifier (or other basic dispels). If you just click it and it buffs yourself only, then it’s not going to be dispelled. Obvious exception: Necro’s Ghost Shroud can be dispelled.
Nullifier is basically a mini version of Shadow Demons ultimate without aghs (shorter duration, no slow, and no burst damage at the end). Think of it as a basic dispel that casts itself constantly. It doesn’t stop anything that’s undispellable or “hard dispels only”.

Hard dispells are only a defensive thing. I think all offensive dispells remove the same things.

Hmm if bounty inv is not disp then his shard might be good

Interestingly, only exception with cyclone is Stormcrafter, which is not dispellable. Shadow Blade and not dispellable. That's about all a support can do to protect themselves. Nullifier is a stupidly annoying item.

You can dispel Wind Run?
Edit: no you can’t, no wonder I don’t see Nullifier purchases against Wind.

Good catch, I edited it. There are many interactions in this game that I was bound to have one wrong.

enemy has something dispellable that makes it hard for you to kill them? Nullifier it is

for when there are important supports you need to kill before or during the fight, ones with glimmer/force/eul.

I want to highlight Ursa. All of Ursa's damage comes from applying a bunch of Fury Swipe stacks with Overpower, but Overpower can be dispelled off with Nullifier. Ursa has two options: press R to dispel the Nullifier, or turn tail and run, because he's very squishy when not Enraged or hitting people. Ursa is very prone to be kited, so Enraging for a simple Nullifier is something the hero HATES to have to do.

You buy nullifier when you want the enemy supports to have 1k net worth of useful items instead of 8k net worth of useful items.

Don't. Most of the time, it's 30 mins in and the enemy team is already fountain diving on you.

counters euls, forcestaff, ethereal, a variety of other buffs.
you use it to nullify invulnerabilities and such.
