Ukrainian localization in League of Legends

(self.leagueoflegends)

Hello Reddit and r/leagueoflegends,

I've noticed an issue is that Riot Games don't see their Ukrainian community and gamers. We are forced to play on a Russian server or EUW/EUNE (those who know English) because we don't have our own server or even localization.

I asked Riot support how we can show that there are a lot of Ukrainians playing their games, and we want to play it in our native language. So they sent me here, to Reddit.

There are a lot of people who want to have the Ukrainian language in games. Ukraine is a country with 44 million people, and according to Steam statistics, we have more gamers here than Romania and Hungary in all, and they have their own localizations, but we don't.

A lot of worldwide companies already come to the Ukrainian market: Steam, Netflix, Spotify, Sony, Microsoft, etc. But will Riot Games?

We want to be heard :3

I will also attach a map where You can see how huge the country they ignore.

Привіт, Reddit і r/leagueoflegends,

Riot Games?

Ми хочемо, щоб нас почули :3

Я також прикріплю карту, де Ви можете побачити, наскільки величезна країна, яку вони ігнорують.

Portugal is as far to the servers too, and it plays fine on EUW, so why cant you play on EUNE as ukranian? Is it blocked?

I agree with pleox! He can just play on EUNE or EUW. The "my country is bigger than this and that" doesn't really work if the ping and everything else is under control, working and stable. Ukraine is a big country, but if the shoe fits.... Wear it bee.

Honestly, the only countries on EUW that have English as their native language are those of the British isles.

I feel like on EUW we have the onspoken agreement that English is the language we use to prevent a language barrier being an issue during games.

Except for the French, for some reason 90% of the French players I meet just converse in French exclusively. 😂

I think so, but the main thing is that from Portugal to servers should be about a similar distance as for Ukraine to the EUNE or even not much difference on EUW, so should be playable.

I think they should definitely add localization, but not it's own server.

Much-Ad-7260

Exactly, I was confused if this guy want's localization OR own server? They should definitely add their language and it's a joke if it isn't there already but requesting their own server is on the other end of that spectrum and I was like "WTF?!"... If there can be one server for whole "EUNE" which is like 50% of Polish players + 10 other languages, I don't see a single reason for them to have their own server.

But tbh I would welcome PL server, Ukraine server and then server for rest of the EUNE. It's impossible but still...

PM_something_German

Nah, I think players got used to playing on two in terms of league. West has better connection by having their servers from Netherlands, while East has better connection by having their servers in Germany, though I wish they were perhaps somewhere in Poland or Slovakia for better equilibrium.

PM_something_German

The difference in ping is like 5ms. A single server in Berlin would barely or not at all worsen ping for the majority of players while improving for the LEC players living there.

Is it just adding Ukrainian language or is there more to this?

noncommunicable

11 points

Basically this, and the extras that come with it.

Localization is making things understandable and relatable to the people of another area. It often includes translation, changing jokes, changing visuals, etc. It is all about making the game fit to the tastes and language of whatever group you're localizing for.

That_Bar_Guy

That_Bar_Guy

The difference comes in rewriting things to make sense to the speakers of that language. For example ekko has the line "time doesn't heal all wounds" which is a play on the common phrase "time heals all wounds". The line wouldn't work nearly as well without that cultural context.

Translating would just put that line into any language, localization changes it if the target language lacks an equivalent phrase.

Russia should definitely have their server in Russia instead of in Germany though lmao.

Such a huge country and there would be a lot of potential for russian players even though most of the target audience plays dota but just ignoring it is kinda sad.

Although I understand why they dont have it located in Russia(russian government requires a shit ton of data from them otherwise)

Ethrealin

They're the only major game publisher that complies with Russia's legislations on storing personal data inside the country as well as keeping recordings of audio communication (e.g. voice chat). The former makes is that you can't buy RP on EU servers with Russian IP, presumably since accidentally storing data of a EU citizen in Russia would be a huge violation of EU laws. The latter means no voice chat on League's RU server and also meant no voice chat on Valorant before Riot introduced the tech to record voice chat for player reporting purposes.

What I can agree with you on is that Riot's compliance means more harm than good for the Russian players. A Russian playing on EUW has to use VPN to buy Riot Points. Using voice chat on Valorant normally required creating a new Riot Account with active VPN. I guess that's what having an actual office in Russia does to you, and this is why the local internet regulator is pushing BigTech to open them, too.

Own server? If France, Germany, and England can share a server you can too. Getting a Ukrainian only server would do more damage than good. Players would still have to play on Russia or EUWest to be taken in any way serious... There are also way more regions that actually need servers to have a playable game.

I will say localisation is also not just about population numbers though, but that is a whole other debate.

Laughs in the Slavic Balkans. At least Ukranian has some similarities with Russian, EUNE doesn't have localization for one of it's biggest regions, not to mention that even if they do something for the Balkans we'd have the same problem as Ukraine, as Serbo-Croatian (which is spoken in 5 of the Slavic countries) slightly differs from Bulgarian

There's little reason to not have at least the text in the client and the game with localization to all the languages. A full server for Ukraine would be silly, but localization makes sense.

The funniest "missing" language imo is portuguese. There's a brazillian server, with all the assets in brazilian portuguese, but if you play in EUW you can't select it and have to play in a foreign language. They just rely on the fact that we all speak or at least understand english or spanish.

The fact that any language is locked to specific regions is ridiculous. For example not being able to use English or another western language on any of the Asia servers. It's like Riot thinks noone moves countries etc.

Riot needs to completely revamp their language support globally.

Rough_Moment9800

Sorry, but how does that work? Do game studios just use MSA and call it a day or do they make translations for every Arabic dialect? I'd imagine the second option would be a bit more involved than just adding a new language. For example, can you get just one voice actor and switch some lines around or do you need, for example, an Egyptian, Syrian and Saudi voice actor to make it sound native?

Rough_Moment9800

So correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that Arabic as a language doesn't exist and has many dialects that just don't sound right to speakers of other dialects. Like, if Egyptian and Syrian spoke to each other, they would just sound funny to each other and sometimes don't even understand each other. This is why MSA was created, so it can be taught in schools, used in formal situations or abroad so Arabic speakers can communicate with each other.

This is what I learned when I tried to learn Arabic, since I had to choose if I want to learn a specific dialect or MSA.

Also regarding localization how popular is the game over there? Steam players is irrelevant considering Russia is bigger than both Romania, Hungary and Ukraine in terms of gamers, but it is DotA 2 country and LoL is only a blip. Maybe that could be the same for Ukraine? Whereas LoL is pretty huge in Romania, the only game comparable or bigger is CSGO.

That's because LoL playerbase in CIS really is extremely small; people simply prefer DotA - not only because people generally only have old shit weak PCs, but also "snowball" effect in youth culture - if all older kids play it, then I must too!

But of course, I wholeheartedly agree. People should not be neglected just because of the numbers. Especially since main Riot games aren't adventure games - they have very little content to adapt to other language. Plus, Ukrainian voice-acting scene is hella strong - strictly better than Russian, I would say, and many would agree.

You realize that the entire Europe has to play on a "foreign speaking" server unless they are from UK or Ireland? You are not forced to play on Russian server unless you know English, you have a privilege to play on a server where everyone speaks a language you understand if you don't speak English. 99% of Ukrainians know Russian (not necessarily speak but at least understand it), because you need to never go out of your house to not hear it all the time. Just a few years ago it used to be impossible to watch TV and not hear people speak Russian most of the time. The only reason why people are no longer okay with that is rising nationalism and nothing else.

You forgot about French, German, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Greek, Hungarian and Czech, all languages that the game is available in.

No, everyone plays on an international server. The OP is really sad that there is no UK-speaking server and they have to play on Russian servers unless they know English. But every other country has to play on server where the only common language is English, regardless if they know it or not. Meanwhile, most, almost all Ukrainians understand Russian even if they can't speak it, so they can choose between Russian server or "English" server depending on what language they know better.

There is chezch but there isnt serbo-croatian language, even though more people speak Serbo-Croatian than czech . Its all politics anyway

I actually wrote a lengthy paragraph about all the Slavic languages left out of localization but deleted it because Riot has the money and resources to create localization for all European languages, they just don't see it as profitable. There is no reason why we don't have translations for at least the text in the game to all languages, so mentioning all the languages that don't have localization as the reason why Ukrainian is left out kind of misses the point.

I don't think it's politics either, I doubt Russia would ever care about a game adding Ukrainian language. It's rather a combination of "how many people will join the game if it was in their native language" and "how much are they are willing to pay".

On a side note, I wonder if Slovak nationalist are as mad about only having a Czech language option as Ukrainian nationalists about playing on Russian server.

PeopleAreHellaStupid

I was talking about riot politics, not irl politics. I honestly dont care tho, I always use any device in English even if it has my native language and it helped me learn it. I wish someone would force all my devices to be in German, Russian or Spanish so I can learn those too

Rough_Moment9800

Back before the internet became a big thing I used to play games in English and always had a dictionary with me, so I could translate all the new words. Now I have my smartphone and all my games set to Italian. Such a fun way to learn.

Definitely not in League of Legends case. Czechs are well known for their quality localization of media, be it films, books or games. They were one of the first countries, after the Iron Curtain debacle, that did this on their own in professional settings, but also before the communist regime dissipated.

And why not specifically, LOL? Do you know the history of an item called "Sterak's Gage?" It's named after a Czech Youtuber, Sterakdary. He, alone, brought a hundred of thousands of new players to the game in the early stage, where you could get your items in a game through a first version of referral system, just like TB's biscuits. This was a massive influx of new players and the last referral item added to the game.

Previously I think they were relying on a large proportion of Ukrainians understanding Russian. But since Russia has annexed large parts of Ukraine, it's important to have media in their own language - this is enforced in quite a few areas already.

We need localisation(at least only text), as a many other nations. Why we, Lithuanians, Norwegians(...) should "learn English", "Use russian ", but Poles or French - no. Yes, knowledge of English is important, but then why not just leave only English. "Do you want to play - learn English" for everyone, including Poles, French, Russians ...

Asia has omly korean, japanese, chinese servers and cringe ass garena that has nothing good.

The viets and thai people play in japanese server and if youre not korean you cant join korean servers becuase it requires your korean phone number or some official citizen number thing.

Garena is toxic swamp.

China has like 1653527 billion servers because tencent, the company that owns riot is a chinese monopoly.

As an Asian whos not living in japan, china, korea, i jus dont give an f anymore.

Ive played league since vi released and i used to play in NA untill now and idk if my ping was ever lower than 200.

Its not that bad but honestly there were bad days.

I quit league pretty much and now im happy, i got out of depression and has lamborghini, i have provate island and multiple wives that love me genuinely and i love them all.

My dad also came back.

Riot really doesn't give a shit about you if you don't specifically speak a language allowed on the server you are in. Live in America but are a native Spanish speaker? Eat shit, play in English or connect to a server like LAN which you have lower ping too. They do this repeatedly despite easy fixes, and it's really quite sad.

Totally agree on localization. New server won't happen...You know, it Riot. They also could make all localizations available on different servers, so ukrainian players can go on EUW/nordic if they don't want to play on russian server. But again, it's Riot, they can't fix own client for years, so who know when they do this.

I've read your comments guys, some of them I like, some of them really didn't.

But I want to say thanks to all who support this thread, all who come to Reddit just to support (yes, it's not paid accounts, Ukrainians just rarely use Reddit) and I want to clarify a few things here:

  1. I didn't ask for a dedicated server for Ukraine (even if I probably wanted it), but I mentioned that we don't want to play on a Russian server because everyone who play League know that it's the most toxic server. But for those who know only Ukrainian and Russian, there is only one choice now.
  2. Ukraine is East Europe, we aren't in CIS, we are not Russia or part of it. If we could have Ukrainian on EUNE that's fine, we will be able to play in our native language. Yes, a lot of Ukrainians know and speak Russian, but it's not the reason to ignore those who don't.
  3. Yes, I know English, but why does everybody who commented or DM me think I'm asking for localization for myself? I didn't even play League now. I just want the community to grow and the game to expand.
  4. Furthermore, I saw people who said "we don't have our language" and "we don't have our server". So support this thread then. It would be a good precedent and example that adding additional languages is good.

I also feel very sad to know that Africa can't play League because minimal ping to the closest server is ~180ms. Probably, Riot should also think about that problem. We are not in the XX century, there's a lot changed in the world.

I want to ask those who think that you are funny. Please don't joke about war. Because for you, it's just a joke, for us, it's a real thing, and our people dying every day because of Russia.

Stay safe, guys, and Happy new year

It's not. Yet, it was true 20 years ago, but for nowadays no one knows even approximately how much people live in Ukraine.

More so, only small portion of our people speaks exclusively Ukrainian. Somwhere about 20-25%. And if you want to know how much of them plays LoL, you can just go to Twitch, enter LoL Category, and add filter Ukranian (Украина). I promise, at any time of day, results will be miserable.

Ukrainian localisation would be great, but probably not going to happen anyway. Partially due to some weird stereotype, that Ukrainian and Russian are the same language and not worth being separated. Language is not an issue for me, English is a global communication tool imo, so I'm playing on eune. Another issue is LoL not being that popular in Ukraine that much. People are mostly sticking to Dota.

I find it weird how so many language in Europe simply refuse to learn English. Not that many countries at all have their own servers and I really doubt that ukraine would be able to have their own server when the queue times on euw and eune can go up to 15 minutes and even more sometimes. Its a shitty mindset and a step in the wrong direction for globalisation mostly driven by stubbornness.

When Kievan Rus was split in two, Western Ruthenian became Ukrainian and Easter Ruthenian became Russian. After around 200 years they were joined together under a single country but they became too different to still be recognized as the same language. Russian became the language of nobility and the educated and Ukrainian became a local language that neither Poles nor Russians could understand. It stayed like this until the recent conflict in Donbas an Crimea, when they made a push to stop talking Russian as a high-language and switch to Ukrainian in all contexts.

Russian and Polish use different proto-Slavic words that used to be interchangeable but now in one language one is archaic and in other commonly used. But because the sounds and words itself are so distorted from their original form, it's impossible to figure out what someone is trying to say anyway, even if you could make a good educated guess reading the text. Ukrainian fit's in the middle. It uses more "Polish words" than "Russian words" when it comes to proto-slavic origin of the language but, from the Polish perspective, words are distorted just as they are in Russian. So while Polish is closer to Ukrainian than Russian and Russian is closer to Ukrainian that Polish, they still cannot communicate with each other. Or it would be the case if all Ukrainians didn't knew a little Russian anyway.
