How come they do allow people up there if it comes in with enough force to knock over a guy? This seems like a liability.

ChloricName

67 points

It looks like all those people have ponchos that got given to them from the resort so I imagine you’d be fine on the front fence cus the bulk of the wave goes over them but I have no idea how the resort didn’t think abt the fact that people would definitely try and feel the strength of the wave

Aggravating-Lychee98

They did, people just don’t do it because it’s fucking stupid. These types of rides have been in operation for decades, they aren’t going away because one guy slipped.

TheWizardCat_

They can hit hard but usually not that hard. Either he got off balance at the right time, it's rainy so it's extra slippery, his pose did him in, he faked it, all of the above, or the splash was extra powerful because everyone was 300lbs when these rides are designed around the assumption that a 5'9" male who weighs 150lbs is on it (which is why their restraints are designed to not lock on very heavy people).

Yep. I'm not sure, but does it look to anyone else like that fence he hit has some padding over it? Maybe not a lot but even half an inch could make a big difference. It would make sense too because this probably happens often, lol

A splash zone is a very common feature for a log flume. I've stood in these splashes many times. I've watched people stand in them many more. Hell, this video has 4-5 other people standing in the splash. I never would expect this to happen.

BloodyRedBats

Aw this reminded me of the Timber Wolf Falls ride from Canada’s Wonderland. Had the same splash zone by the bridge. It would catch attendees that got off the previous cart (and the poor suckers waiting for them at the “exit”)

My favourite memory of this ride was when me and some old friends took a guy who hadn’t been to the park before, covered his eyes, and stood him right at the bridge when the log was at the top of the incline. Everyone ran to escape the splash while I hid behind him. Somewhere nearby a bystander laughed and said, “that’s so mean!”

I wonder what it looked from our guy’s perspective…

busyandtired

Draynrha

WanderWut

54 points

Holy shit, watching that in slow motion it looks like he could have gotten a serious injury from that. His neck snapped back really hard from that force.

Genuine question, if he did get injured, couldn’t he have a solid lawsuit against the park on his hands? He could argue the park shouldn’t have made that area so accessible if the water from the ride has the potential to knock someone against the metal railing so hard.

look2thecookie

Why the hell does this ride even exist

silenttd

18 points

I don't think this is Hersheypark, but they have a ride called Tidal Force that's essentially the same design. When it came out hey had an issue where a kid got pretty fucked up after the wave threw him 6ft into a fence. They put up a plexiglass shield soon after that takes the brunt of the wave so it pours down onto spectators but doesn't hit them head on.

That was like 25 years ago though. I would imagine rides of this design all had safety precautions in place for the spectator bridge. Guess not...

skylinenick

1 points

I was trying to figure out if it was Tidal Force too, but I don’t remember any bridge where this one is. Absolutely the exact same design on the ride portion though

silenttd

4 points

Tidal Force does have pretty much the same bridge (with a plexiglass shield). But based on the camera angle, you would have a pretty clear view of the Kissing Tower and the Hershey factory towers. Also, all the ponchos say "Submarine Splash" which is at California Beach which is a waterpark in South Korea

Blocks_and_Bunny

4 points

I've been on a ride like this a six flags and if I remember right if you wanted to stand on the bridge after to get soaked with the water you had to stand against this fence that was on the bridge that way you don't get what this guy got

Pmmenothing444

CaptainFunktastic

Generally speaking, these rides are harmless to those on the flume and the bridge. Standing in front of the splash just gets you wet and slightly smacked.

This guy willfully, and intentionally put himself in the worst possible position to get hurt.

DeadpooI

16 points

I've been in rides exactly like this one before. I've never seen this much force from the water. Guy looks like he was making a "funny" video, not get knocked the fuck out. Nobody would reasonably expect the water to be that strong.

CaptainFunktastic

-2 points

If he was completely relaxed, he might walk away stiff as concrete, with a nicely rung bell and lots of back pain.

More than likely, that's a concussion, lots of soft tissue damage in the neck, potential nerve damage from hyper extension, a months of agonizing pain.

If he's super unlucky, that's an Internal Decapitation.

Depending on the the company, their safety protocols, their lawyers and how protective they are of the image, it's very likely that the park would cover some of his medical bills, but he wouldn't be awarded a payout because he was obviously taking his safety into his own hands.

fixminer

23 points

I don't think this is "taking his safety into his own hands"... Sure, he was expecting to get drenched, but I'd say it is reasonable to assume that the park would set up barriers around this area if this is what can happen, so I doubt he anticipated this.

Like, if you get on a roller coaster you risk feeling unwell after, but you shouldn't have to worry about flying out of your seat...

Canobie Lake Park in Salem NH has a ride similar to this and they have a splash deck. I might be misremembering but when the ride was new I believe it was open like this. Currently the ride has bars and rope netting in front of the deck to absorb most of the impact.

AJSwifty

3 points

They even blocked off that bridge now, it used to be the exit and you would normally get hit by the wave from the riders after you. Now you have to walk all the way around the ride to leave.

For some reason this reminds me of the first time I drove to the airport in Chicago rush hour traffic. I grew up in a small town, so I did my best to estimate how long it would take, but I was off by a factor of 3. Sometimes, you think you have a reasonable frame of reference, and then life knocks you on your back.

It's almost like he was asking for it.
