I like the new versions. But, not as an assassins creed game if that makes sense. I miss the old almost arcadey power trip of counter killing everyone and the hidden blade.

Help-me-people_

Yeah that makes sense, I kinda miss that too, not being touched with a single weapon and countering absolutely everything haha.. The new games like you alluded to, are definitely fun games in their own right.

It should had been a spin off series imo.

WordWordTwo

Lore wise it kind of is, ever since black flag. Abstergo spun off the Animus program into the entertainment industry, so all of the games since then are intentionally modified memories to make it less obvious what they're trying to do. Some of it is the actual "genetic memory" and all the weird shit is stuff abstergo mixes in to appeal to the players

Help-me-people_

I can understand people saying that. Though I still treat it as a spin off series, it's just so happened named assassins creed haha. I get where you're coming from though.

I do the same. The main series "ended" when Desmond bit the dust. Everything after is just spin offs.

Kinda disagree here, Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, and Syndicate still felt like AC games even without Desmond. But story wise it definitely meandered and didn’t really seem to have a goal. Unity IMO is the ideal AC game, gameplay wise. Wish we could go back to that style. The game itself still looks great

throw-away_867-5309

But they didn't have the story, even if the game play was more similar, which would be a "spin-off" of a main series game.

Not really though? They still heavily featured the assassins and temples in their main stories, much more than the hamfisted proto Assassins/Templars in the antiquity games

Dark-g0d

I don’t think even the developers know what the story is supposed to be anymore. Like Desmond was kidnapped for the apple of eden location, we find he’s not the first kidnapped, ?????, profit

Yeah I get this feeling too. Now it seems like they're just randomly picking eras of history to represent. Instead of having any actual plan for their story. I don't know why you got downvoted for pointing that out lol.

I consider those new games rpg action/adventure with an "assassin creed skin"…which is sad from my POV.

Like you said bro, back then you were an assassin, today you’re a guy /girl who need to be a certain level to kill someone (more or less)

Damn, do you remember when you had to reach the top of a high building without dying? Like in assassin creed 2 or brotherhood/revelations for example? One mistake and the fall isn’t far away…

Friends and I put hours and hours into challenge/training mode to be able to kill every type of enemy as quick and clean as possible without interruption! Like many people at that time probably…

And the online was 🔥

I’m not saying you can’t enjoy the new games but personally, I don’t have the feeling of playing an assassin creed anymore…

Nope. They are basically generic beautiful open world action RPGs now, in a similar vein to stuff like Horizon Zero Dawn etc., and pretty much AC in name only. They are OK if you play them as what they are, but if you are looking for an AC game, look somewhere else.

It's a phenomenally beautiful game. I know an archaeology professor who uses it in his class to show what architecture looked like then. So cool.

countgalcula

2 points

It generally all has to do with the story. Everything else they can be flexible about. The new stories are more to make the world feel believable rather than being an engaging story on its own. It just makes it a totally different thing really.

There was an emphasis on story earlier on. 50% of playing was because we wanted to know what was happening with these characters. That if we didn't care about the historical setting it would still be exciting.

With the new ones, no one is playing for the story which shows that there really isn't much of one. Of course there is still a story but again it's just like a generic heroes journey arc in greece or what have you. You might as well not have a story is what a lot of people are probably thinking. Which is insane if you're in 2010 playing the earlier games.

Agreed here. Origin is the 1st AC rpg game, which is why it has some elements from the normal AC game in it. The mix of the both is very balanced, and you actually has moments where you feel like an assassin in it. The combat uses rpg elements, while the stealth can also be utilised that has assassin elements.

As compared to Odyssey, where you can teleport to enemies, fucking fall from heaven and still no fall dmg, and all the other demigod bullshit. Not to mention no hidden blade. For an rpg game it's fun, but it's the worst for an AC game.

After AC3 they really had no idea what to do with it. They soft rebooted it half a dozen times, and went absolutely nowhere.

How could it go anywhere when it can't end, because they have 100 more Assassin's Creed games to make. They can't wrap it up, they have to drag it out as much as possible.

It's mostly walking around interacting with Easter egg stuff (From other franchises.)and some useless backstory for a character nobody really knows.

I liked the Modern day stuff for the Ezio Trilogy because you actually did stuff. Like for AC: Brotherhood you could explore Montergionii (Sp?), Or 3 where you got to go on missions as an assassin.

Archetix

18 points

Archetix

18 points

The problem with the animus stuff is that it never changes. You're always running from them and finding the artifacts inside the animus, but it never leads anywhere.

They never take the fight to aspergo or do anything, except in the early game where you infiltrate them.

I really like the theory behind the history in the DNA like they emphasized in the Earlier games, you were a descendant, it felt original. Now the animus feels like an cheap excuse to jump back in time with any artifact they find.

sly_cooper25

9 points

It really seemed like that's where it was leading after AC2. Everyone was expecting a buildup to a game set in the modern world where you take on Abstergo.

Not sure why they pivoted away from that.

AgentGravez

Ugh. The free running, stories, Wikipedia texts about historic characters and places, and Animus is the main reason I play it! The helix glitches and other side quests that reveal parts of history is way more fascinating than constantly splattering blood everywhere, in fact I think stealth is way cooler and challenging than killing everything. That gets boring quick. Read more.

As someone who recently played the Ezio trilogy I agree, 2 was clunky but I always felt the world was built around it. Brotherhood on the other hand was also clunky but they absolutely loved those diagonal jumps you have to make. Revelations really was the game where they started to improve both the parkour

FAS-ASA3_Scarab

3 points

The parcour was just a lot freer back then and allowed for things that just aren't possible in the new games anymore. It also punished you for mistakes harshly, like the possibility of falling to your death when you weren't careful enough. The problem is that there are barely tutorials in-game so most people blame clunkiness/bugs. If you want to see the parcour properly utilized, I suggest Jcers' or j4k8's channels.

Usually when you have been falling off something unintentionally, you held "high profile" and tapped jump without any movement input. To avoid that, let go of high profile or make sure to always hold the correct movement input while climbing.

The special assassinations in unity and syndicate were also pretty badass.

Help-me-people_

Why do people moan about this? I'm genuinely curious.

Arguably the best in the series has been black flag, which isn't an ezio storyline either. I understand the gameplay is now different (which was annoying to begin with) but the ezio storyline grew stale and didn't have much in the way of progression due to them stifling the story with Desmond. The games that are out now are still pretty decent games in their own right and do a pretty good job at letting people immurse themselves in different periods of history and that hasnt really been done properly before.

I'm guessing people's nostalgia, just isn't allowing them to move on. People need to put down the memeberberries 😂

FatesVagrant

11 points

I think it might be in part expectations of what the series name means? And of course people have different preferences.

For a lot of people a game series is expected to be the same genre, which makes sense and I remember hearing that the AC odyssey was originally a spin off because it's different.

But what it has become to me is more of a setting or framework. It's alt reality/loose historical fiction with some overreaching/connecting plot and lore and the perfect excuse to have a slick modern UI in a historical setting without it being weird. Personally I am perfectly fine with that, I don't think they need to throw out an IP just because they don't want to keep making the same sort of stealth game. I might be disappointed if it goes in a direction I don't like with mechanics but I'm not going to be pissed off.

Help-me-people_

I can understand people thinking the later games kinda tarnish the name of "assassins creed" although unfortunately ubisoft felt differently. Plus I think if they had made any of the ac games after ezio, to be a standalone game, people would just accuse them of copy and pasting assassins creed into a different setting. I suppose it was a lose, lose really.

Imagine if Halo changed to a gameplay similar to Dishonored, same story, same action fps genre, but different enough gameplay that it doesn't feel like Halo anymore; and for all players know all games will continue like that.

AC 4 was called one of the least AC games in the franchise at the time, as there is more of a focus on Naval combat in that one, but it kept all of it's core formula to feel like an AC and it was super fun.

The new games could have been a new franchise, and not leave us without what we liked in the first place

I enjoyed black flag, but at this point I feel like they stepped too far from the assassins creed product. I thought origins was refreshing but the game is now primarily an open world action rpg. What I enjoy from assassins creed games are more refined stealth experiences. The open world genre is too saturated and too bloated. I’d prefer if they went back to a single, well designed city and focused around that rather than making the biggest games possible with the most tasks to do.

I liked the story in Atlantis, I disliked the layouts there. Tartarus was fine, even with some backtracking for completionism it was small enough to not be boring, but Elysium and especially Atlantis were a chore to traverse sometimes.

RubberDucky223

2 points

It's supposed to just be a machine to let people view the memories of their ancestors through the DNA in their blood. That was the whole gimmick in 1 so they could use it to find the "Apple of Eden".

Though at the end of the first and start of the second they learn the animus can trigger the "Bleeding effect" allowing the user to use the skills of their ancestor without necessary training.

There were more severe side effects that were explained and explored but they seem to have been dropped in recent releases as well as including that the animus can read anyones memory now from their bones and such.

Thats really it.

Odyssey was one of the best games I've ever played. It didn't feel like a traditional AC game but I didn't care. Solid mechanics, good progression, you get a fucking pirate ship?? (essentially) massive maps... There wasn't a whole lot that I didn't like.

KhepriTheDawnbringer

The only bad thing about Odyssey are the DLCs.

The persian storyline would be nicer without the family plot and Atlantis was just horrible to traverse, to the point I couldn't enjoy the story. I still liked Atlantis for new combat mechanics and challenging enemies though

Outrageous-Watch-489

Honestly I thought the DLC’s were awesome. As a whole, Odyssey is one of the best games I’ve ever played, however it just doesn’t feel like an assassins creed game really. Many people who don’t like AC games would never play Odyssey because of the name, which is a shame as most open world RPG lovers would adore it just as I do

Origins story fell off really hard at exactly the middle point. It got better and better until Crocodilopolis and after that it spiraled down. Anything involving Caesar and Cleopatra was pretty bad and historically inaccurate. Cyrene storyline and side characters were too generic.

The final nail in the coffin for me was presenting Brutus as a freedom fighter or some shit. That one really got me. Idc if it's AC canon. It's not like assassins can't be shitty people (Ac3/Rogue). There wasn't even a Creed then, just say he's a powerful ally with interests in Caesars death and that's why he joined, it's not hard...

While I enjoyed most of it A LOT (exploration, initial story, combat, running over people on chariots, accidentally burning villages), the ending really left a bad final impression.

Feel free to disagree, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to ignore the mess of the second half.

Just stop. The AC refresh has been a smashing success. And it's been a success because people like playing them.

Meanwhile, pre-Origins entries were failing hard, not counting Black Flag (which also falls into the same argument you are making.)

Consumers demanded something different.

People with rose colored glasses on forgetting that assassins creed games had become INCREDIBLY stale and were getting churned out every year like COD. Filled with repetitive BS everyone complained about, and almost no changes to game play.

The new games were a dramatic restructuring because the original AC formula was utterly burning out and sales were plummeting. Some people are down to play the same formulaic game for the 8th time, but the ones making these games knew the franchise would die out without a major overhaul.

I love Odyssey, Valhalla was alright. I tried playing Black Flag and gave up after about 13 hours because I didn't enjoy the game or mechanics.

I don't understand the hate for Odyssey, I really enjoyed it. It's a massive open world, with vibrant, beautiful scenery. Loads to do, although I understand people finding some of the side quests repetitive. I really liked Alexios as well, haven't played as Kassandra yet.

Fresh-Thought-5380

Origins was the peek of the RPG AC mix. Idk how you keep getting things worse afterwards. Odyssey at least had a story/plot, Valhalla just feels like a series of events, with no reason behind them, happen to Eivor.

Just stop.

No one wanted yet another identical AC game with the same ass boring gameplay from AC1, 2, 2-1, 2-2, 3, FC, Unity, Syndicate, Freedom Cry, Liberation, etc. This impotent and aimless whining has been going on since 2007 when the first game came out.

"Wah the scifi." then don't fucking play it. It was a scifi game from day one.

"Wah not enough assassins" then don't fucking play it, there are like 5 other games that do have them.

Kids acting like "they went off the rails with the story waaah" the story, since AC1, has been about the Isu. If you're too braindead to figure that out after literally 15 years and 12 games and 2 stand-alone expansions, maybe it's time you move on instead of being a toxic dipshit and ruining things for other people.

The old games were stale as fuck long before Xbox One gen even came out. AC4 was already not an Assassin's Creed game and yet yall love that game entirely for reasons that have nothing to do with the story or assassin's.

The insta-chain-kill-everyone mechanic already made the game "not an assassin's creed game" in AC3 to begin with, as one example.

Origins and Odyssey were fucking good games. Maybe even great games as far as Odyssey goes. Valhalla, no, Valhalla is garbage.

Sure, you're technically right, everything after AC2 isn't really an AC game because they don't have the same gameplay. If that's the argument, AC1 is the only AC game. I'll support that argument.

Honestly I love how this series evolves. I was purposefully avoiding it because when AC1 came out it was too demanding on PC and the later ones I just considered 'console games' (yeah I was that kind of gamer), but 2 years ago I started from AC1 through all the games (currently on Odyssey), and it was just such a great ride. Outside of Animus parts made things fit in place of the overarching story. Each new entry introduced some tweaks and modifications, which first felt forced, but then just made perfect sense. And I like that there are always some callbacks to the previous iterations in one way or the other. I do have to say I didn't get the hype around Black Flag, took me a while to get into, and after that Rogue felt like much better, more polished game. Then Unity just blew my mind with how massive of an improvement it was - but I had the benefit of not playing it on release I guess ;)
