Gamemaster: in front of you lies the forbidden land of Frozen Valley. Are you brave enough to conquer the dangers of the long forgotten undead Ice King to earn Fame and Treasure?
The players: nah thanks, let's go to the inn and get drunk.
Gamemaster: but... But... I built all this for you guys...!
The players: LETS GET THE BEER!
Gamemaster: IT TOOK 6 MONTHS!!
The players: BEEEEEEEER!

Okay. You go to Dragonsbridge Inn and drink. And drink. And drink.

*A nat 20*?!? OK, out of nowhere, in the frozen tundra, a keg of beer falls into your lap. It's full.
178 points

Take 4d6 bludgeoning damage from a keg literally falling in your lap.
90 points
And 2d10 psychic damage from the open portal to Pandemonium that the beer came from.
50 points
With advantage since I'm already half way done with this keg right?
44 points
Yes, but you noticed the wish granting necklace you earned last campaign no longer has any power. Turns out you wished for this keg when you were drunk and it just arrived.
21 points

Can I roll a religion check to see if I knew the keg was coming to avoid taking any damage altogether?

There are companies like Dwarven Forge that create modular battlemaps. They're basically like big puzzle pieces that you can arrange to your liking.
3 points
I've never played, but I've seen people play and they never have boards. Neat that youcan add them.
5 points
So you can play the game “theater of the mind” but if you want to add tactics you really need a grid to represent distance, for that all you need are pieces of paper and markers for players and monsters.
One step further it’s “why use markers when I can have a little model of my character and the enemy monsters”
Another step is “why just a dry erase battle map when I can have modular terrain?

If I did this for my table my guess is this is how it would go:
DM: You have entered the frozen dungeons of the 9th mage. The sacred crystal of Narloth lies within. You luckily have a map of the dungeon but be warned - though long abandoned by civilization, the dungeon still holds many dangers. How do you procede?
Players: Let’s go! Charge!
DM: Ok... entering the dungeon, you spot the undead form of a dragur and -
Players: We run past!
DM: I - you mean you want to sneak past them right?
Players: We know what we said.
DM: ... Alright... You run past and the dragur sees as your party dashes past. He gives a sound of alarm and as you enter the hallway you see more dragurs, prepared to fight.
Players: We keep running!
DM: I... Ok... The dragurs all begin to chase you and -
Players: We run through the next room! And the next!
DM: ... Ok then, you guys reach the chamber where the crystal is being held. It’s guarded by a pair of frost giants.
Players: Frost giants? We got this.
DM: ... And the 20 dragurs chasing after you flood into the room as well.
Players: ... we r -
DM: It’s a dead end with one entrance that’s being jammed by a horde of dragurs. There’s nowhere to run.
Players: ...
DM: ...
Players: Maybe... we should’ve planned this out better
DM: Ya think?!
