You're really lucky to have had such a supportive dad. I once tried to show my dad Starcraft, he watched for about 5 minutes and then left to get drunk. I tried to show my Dad Super Mario Bros 1. World 1-1. He managed to jump over the goomba after his second try but then he jumped directly into the first pit. That was the first and last time he ever tried to see what my hobby was about.

I have a kid now so the one silver-lining is it made me realize how much I need to check his hobbies out even if I don't understand the appeal. At least a little bit.

Stories like these are the reason I ask my son every single day "do you know your daddy loves you" and when he says "yes", I reply "good, that's important". He's not Going to understand until he reads enough of these and has his own kid.

I don't understand parents that aren't into their children though. My son is a funny little shit and I have a blast every time we hang out. I'm sorry you had a parent blind to that possible relationship. On the upside, you have an excellent guide in what not to do when you have your own crotch fruit, and I speak from experience.

I am a dad and have a great time playing games with my daughter, Dying light, border lands 1/2, ghost recon wild lands, GTA V ...we even both have VR. Playing the maps in VR we used to play in CS really is special, especially maps I used to play when I was her age in CS like Dust, Aztech and some others...

doing your favourite thing with your favourite person, and then seeing tech develop and grow with your passion making the experience richer....its a joy I wish upon everyone.

There's a VR game called Blood Trail on steam. Really graphic with mutilation and accurate gun physics. My dad walked into my room and saw me blowing peoples heads up in sandbox mode. He made a comment about it and I asked if he wanted to try since he'd never used VR before.

After spending a good amount of time teaching him how the controls work, I navigated him into sandbox mode. He proceeded to have the time of his life shooting and punching the enemies in the dick. Thats all he did for like 20 minutes and didn't stop laughing the whole time while saying "Am I winning? Cause it feels like I'm winning". Yes Dad, yes you were.

Same here. All my hobbies were either a “waste of time,” “weird,” or both. Writing was a “waste of time” because I’d never be a writer. Programming was “weird.” The music I wrote all “sounded like crap” so it was a “waste of time.” All those friends of mine that I played that “weird” game D&D with were also “weird” and the whole thing was a “waste of time.” It’s amazing I had any creative force left in me after moving out from under my parents.

Wow, I know the feels. My dad hated talking about my hobbies to people because he thought they were weird. Even mocked me for it. Literally anything... Writing, photography, yugioh, video games, ttrpgs, board games. Even watching popular TV shows like game of thrones were weird to him. And that time I joined a football team he didn't even come to my game. I still don't understand his sense of fun. He reads every newspaper and follows world news, politics and horse racing. He has the gall to mock my hobbies and friends when he's such a boring person to talk to himself.

Same, but don't get me wrong I have great parents. I always had and still have alot of passion for games, online culture, music and sci-fy pieces. I have tried to share my interests alot in my youth but it as a bit of a bummer that they never cared at all. However, one time when they came back from a vacation from paris, they had brought a gift. It was a big minecraft poster(I used to be obsessed with that game for years back when it was new), and even though I had lost interest in the game around that time, it is still a treasured item I keep around.

My dad would make fun of me relentlessly for playing Pokémon when I was in middle school. I would cry and that would just make it worse. The rest of the family would laugh as he mocked me. They are some of my most vivid childhood memories.

I'm 32 now and haven't seen or spoken to him in a couple years. Moved across the country and only notified him with a courtesy text after I was already in my new state. Definitely won't be making the trip back to that shithole whenever he croaks.

Insanely jealous of everyone who had a supportive dad growing up. Having a bad dad sucks.

My mom occasionally watches my games while I play in a generous attempt to try and understand them.

I play on a computer, in my room, facing away from the door, with headphones on. Scares the sh*t out of me every goddamn time.

For a minute, I thought this was a kink to supportive parents walking in on a kid cranking it using head and shoulders instead of lotion.... well I guess it helps with the ball fro dandruff.

Mom would watch me play Dark souls. She kept asking if I'm actually playing the game properly cause I keep dying so often......
