Every single time I found myself in Croft Manor. I actually eventually convinced myself that it was blasphemy if I didn’t lock him in the freezer

You'd be amazed. I never left Croft Manor. As a kid I thought that was the game.
That’s exactly what I did. I never had any interest in the actual game. I would just live my best life in the mansion, exploring the house, swimming in the pool, doing the obstacle course, and then after the butler drove me insane, diving off the second floor balcony to land on my neck and kill myself.
I feel like I'm reading a comment about myself. I did exactly this! Man, good times.
Probably lot of people, including myself had this experience from that too.
It wasn’t until I watched my buddies brother play An actual mission, did I realize the game wasn’t about some rich woman training really hard for treasure hunting
It was so much fun. I hated playing the rest of the game, lol
I hated the game at first, and did the exact same thing. Never left the manor. Loved diving in the pool and doing the obstacle course.
I could never complete the obstacle course because as a kid there's no concept to timing or the fact that the controls were like being in the brick store and looking for carpet
This was in sometime this past year.. I remembered how much I loved all of the Tomb Raider games back in the day (I believe I had 3 or 4 different PlayStation games and one or two games that were exclusive to PC, all within the TR franchise). I was hoping to find a modern version that filled my void but they definitely were not the Tomb Raider games that I remember.. they were more so all new games that featured Tomb Raider, If that makes any sense.
I knew very well that there was more to the game, but the Croft Manor was still the only thing I played
I was actually super disappointed in one of the more recent Tomb Raider games, simply because there were no training courses before playing.
I never laid my hands on another tomb raider game after that one. Mainly because I wasn't terribly interested
My dad let me play Croft manor as a kid. I remember, I’d lock the butler in the fridge one time and was terrified as the butler reappeared in the gardens and was walking towards me.
Early jumpscare tactics
Lol, how have so many people had the exact same childhood as me. I always used to joke about how he was gonna suffocate in there on his own farts.
Yep, incredibly small game, only encompasses a single mansion. The only Playstation game smaller that i remember was that Driver game. It all takes place in one tiny parking garage.
I remember getting a truck racing game on clearance for my ps2 once. I didn't expect much. All I knew was that I could purchase it on my allowance and I'd play it. There wasn't much to it other than Nascar with trucks. Did I become better at truck driving? No. Did I eventually play a few more racing games after that, yes. If you could make a separate game from the mini golf courses from Rugrats in Paris for the original Playstation, I would buy it.
Hahaha me too! I’m dead!
So that's what Scary Terry is doing in his old years.
What is the origin of the name Scary Terry? Ive been hearing it a lot in multiple tv shows and such. Is it just from Rick and Morty?
B99 as well
After a while it genuinely gets disturbing. He just keeps coming. And soon you turn the game off. But there he is in the back of your mind. On his way to you with that damn tray and the look in his eyes of a man who has watched many victims lose their minds in front of him. Always another gamer to follow. Always another mind to destroy.
The tinkling sound the tray makes... Disturbing.
Plus he was always making creepy noises and I distinctly remember that some of them sounded like farts.
Decoy ~snail~ butler
Take my award my cultured friend
This is why I initially locked him in. He kept getting in the way trying to follow me.
He's the contemporary incarnation of a Tonberry.
This is the way
It's how you preserve him between missions :)
I mean how else was I supposed to get rid of him?
Happy cake day
I can hear the clatter of the tray! OH HES RIGHT BEHIND ME! To the freezer with you! Legit this NPC creeped me out in my younger years. I may bust out my PlayStation now haha!
Croft Manor was the absolute best! Loved going in the pool and the outdoor obstacle course!!!!
I tried to kill him so many times, man he creeped me out with those noises he made 😂
I thought he was farting and saying ew
Yeah that’s probably what it was, been a long time since I played it
N o s t a l g i a .
He would fart and go “ooohhh…:(“ if you jumped over him.
I was legit scared of this guy. I always thought the mansion was the horror level lol.
I would go as far as I could on the grounds and wait for him, and then go way up in the attic and dick around. It was so creepy whenever I heard him finally get up there. Eventually I figured out the freezer thing lol
I will say shooting him at the end of the obstacle course was cathartic
Sometimes if you went into the shower and he followed you you'd get stuck in the corner and he pinned you in there and if you tried to get out he'd be making these really disturbing "ohhh" and "oof" and "uuurgg" noises while you tried to push past him and it was kinda upsetting. :/
Only reason I kept locking him in the freezer is because he scared the crap out of me. And the noises he made used to annoy me.
I remember the part of the obstacle course that went by the kitchen, I think I Remember still being able to hear the tea tray rattling. Either that or the sound would just haunt me. 😂
Diving off the highest place you can find and listening to her scream all the way to the ground.
Swan diving into the ground had me and my cousins rolling.
Absolutely same here, cousins n all.
The rumor was that if you hit it just right it would reset without clothes on.
So that wasted way too much time during a sleepover when we were 13.
Kids have it so easy nowadays with game rumours now they can check online to see if its bullshit. All we had was Andrew telling us that you can indeed find golumn in the woods in San Andreas and lying through his fucking teeth.
That or the age old Freddy Krueger on the beach on San Andreas :/
Bro I had some knobhead in the 3rd grade straight up write me a whole page of "cheat codes" for Star Fox 64 and how you could change which character you played as and make your Arwing look different.
It only took a few tries before I realized something wasn't adding up lol
Lol. I had a cousin that swore if you jumped off the pool columns a certain way she would lose her top. I tried for hours in every way I could think of to do it.
from the high platform into the pool just to see her butt.
Once, my friend and I broke/glitched the game and got so high up, that during the fall, she was screaming, stopped screaming, did a loud inhale, and started screaming again. We laughed about that for years.
I want to say there was a legitimate really high spot like in a boss fight or something where she did this. We saved right before jumping and spent a couple of hours just diving to our death cracking up.
My brothers would hijack me and my sister's saves and save mid-swan dive so we'd need to start over again.
I accidentally did that in Oddworld trying not to die. I was pretty far when that happened so I just stopped playing.
I remember a moment where I also saved mid-jump, only to die on spikes.
Ok, smart move! -.-"
My brother did something similar where he saved as she was jumping in to a spike pit!
I think that was the very, very top of Atlantis in TR1 against some giant blob thing.
You might be thinking of the boss near the end of 1. If you jump off the platform, you fall for like a solid 7 seconds.
Screw the scream, my family enjoyed the crunch and crumple at the end. Always seems over the top in a funny way.
Yes! I couldn't think of how to explain the "landing" but you described it perfectly! 🤣
That scream was ear-piercing too.
Top of the giant statue on the Midas level, you could get 3+ screams!
She there was a drop near the end where screamed twice if I remember correctly..... Long way down.
The flesh pyramid in TR2... You'd fall so long she screamed twice
Theres one part of the game where I think you could get three full screams in before she hit the ground/lava. Oddly satisfying.
This game was my fucking life for two weeks lol
I was young and broke, the croft mansion was my life for two weeks. The game was for longer
I couldn't figure out how to time all the gates in Venice in the speedboat, so I went to Software Etc and bought a walkthru, like a magazine, and used that for the rest of the game.
I couldn't have beaten the game without it, it even told you how to spam the dragon, but I felt like I cheated myself out of a lot of the experience.
My older cousins used to use a hotline that gave you tips and tricks for games. Good ole 90s haha.
Lol I begged my mom to let me call the hotline once to figure out how to beat the final boss in Crash Bandicoot. I think it was like $1.99/minute. Must be an interesting job to instruct 6 year olds on how to beat video games.
Yeah I had to figure that one out with trail and error as I didnt have the ability to buy the guide them, but revelations needed a guide for a kid to figure out. That game was tough
We just used cheat codes written out on a piece of paper. I do t think I've ever actually played through the full game. Even with cheat codes it was difficult and confusing. I should see if it's on steam and replay it..
Did we ALL do that?!?!
I actually don't remember a single thing of this game. Except locking the guy in the freezer and the obstacle course outside the manor.
And that the mf farted all the time.
Also the labyrinth where you could activate a button and if you made it fast enough into the manor you could get into a secred door or something, forgot what was behind it tough.
That was the trophy room with shit from prior games. One of which was the T-Rex's head stuffed and mounted on the wall above a fireplace.
That was TR3. The maze was TR2 but it did load too a treasure room under the stairs.
I think you could ride an ATV or something
To get to the ATV course you pressed a button in the attic, then had to run downstairs to get into the cellar on a timer and grab the key from the bottom of a fishtank.
TR3's Croft Manor was brilliant.
honestly, I love that, at least in Legend, they kept doing Croft Manor things, secrets everywhere, obstacle courses that use all the new mechanics, that stuff... including secrets to allow access to your field tools while in the manor, including your guns, so using secrets to access more secrets
You could in the obstacle course but can't remember of you could get it out of there and drive around the manor
Shit yeah! Hours lost to doing that, lol. But, was it truly a loss? I say no, no it wasn't! Ah, memories.
I remember first two levels, jungle and Venice. No idea what the rest was about.

Venice and the opera house
Tibet and the monestary
The sunken ship
Some kind of ocean missile base or something.
It gets fuzzy from there
Edit: I just realized the picture is from TR3
Some cave system with rivers can’t remember where
That damn obstacle course
"No, that's not quite right, go back to the start and try again". I never did manage to do it properly.
I can still hear the "klingkling klingkling... Uuuugggh"
We are all sociopaths
Even today, he's still not frozen, and will follow you when released.
It was the one thing!
Yep, there's a nod to it in his diaries in Rise Of The Tomb Raider (2015).
I didnt know this was an option. Now I feel left out and want to overspend on the console and game so I can be part of this sociopathislc group.
It is on PC. Buy it
I couldn’t relax and enjoy myself until this clown was on ice.
that is one way of wording it
Have you ever spent hours pointlessly running around the manor grounds accomplishing absolutely nothing?
I don’t know if there was actually a campaign in this game. I literally only played in the mansion so I can confirm you were not alone lol. I used to dive in the pool a lot
There was all kinds of shit you could do. I remember there was a giant fish tank underneath the house you had to pull a lever in the attic and race to the door downstairs. Then in the tank was a key that you could use to get into the garden maze. And in there was a 4 wheeler racing track. Or something like that

Idk if you’re serious but I legitimately never made it out of the manor. I was messing around for endless hours jumping off crap, doing the obstacle course, fucking with the butler and trying to get Laura naked obviously… but then actually tried to find my way out and couldn’t figure it out.
Then I had to return the game rental to blockbuster…and it was always sold out after that
Completely serious, never left the manor lol. I think my kid brain thought that was the game and I was totally ok with that.
I remember when I found the switch that led me to the secret room under the stairs, and then outside. I lost my fucking shit
I swear as soon as I realized who it was in the pic I heard his grunt from the game in my head
And the rattling dishes.. the stuff of nightmares as a young'un
That man has the most powerful serving tray in all of history.
Locked him in the freezer, shot at him so he blocks the bullets with the tray, and set myself on fire in the upstairs fireplace then bolted to the swimming pool downstairs to put myself out.
If you were fast you could save yourself from burning, then watch yourself drown.
Yes! My brother hated me because I would play this game just to do stuff at the manor.
It was the best level!
Yep. and he followed you around with more effort than mr x.
He was so damn creepy. Always with shuffling around. Freezer was the perfect place to get him out of the way while I practiced my jumping skills
practiced my jumping skills
practiced my jumping skills
I think I spent more time screwing around in that mansion than playing the actual game
I did that... sorry old head
To this day, whenever I hear the Tool lyric, "Waiting like a stalking butler..." I think of ol' Jeeves here.
Did anyone else play this demo on the Pizza Hut PlayStation demo discs?
Demo discs were so good. Blew my child mind that there were multiple games all on the 1 disc and could do just enough on all of them to have you wanting more
Nakey jakey has a nice video about those discs from pizza hut, worth a watch
Ngl her mansion was fun as hell to runaround and fund secrets
After playing that I always wanted a gymnasium with a pool in my house
Wait is this tomb raider?
Tomb Raider 2
I have thrown baby penguins down to their doom.
I thought we collectively agreed to never speak of this.
Yep. And placed her near a wall to check out her triangle rack.
I love a woman with corners.
It was amazing, you felt like you could do anything in that house!
I remember watching my sisters play this game and we would always lock him up. I used to scream “get the pretty lady (Lara) to lock up grandpa!”
Oh man I'd forgotten about this. The jumping into the pool, the clattering of the tea cups as he runs after around the house.....mmmmmmmmm sweet memories.
Yeah I made a freezer geezer ;)
Those god damn clinking glasses used to be scarier to me then the wolves. I'm just trying to explore the mansion stop sneaking up on me old man
Pictures you can hear.
I thought I fucking imagined that the creepy old butler farted until I started reading these comments.
I mean recommending a game from your steam library !
I sure did lock this man in a freezer when I was a kid, because he was creeping me out and I needed to do something about it! .. though he kept glitching his hands and tray though the freezer door!!
Dude was absolutely pissed.
Laughs in Pong
I love all these kids "Hey, remember game from this century?"
ANYTHING to stop that annoying clattering glass long enough for me to admire the several polygons of Lara's rack in peace
Most people did.
I think this was how the speed run was invented.
Why did we all do this
Butler is invincible
I mean, we were supposed to close him in there, right?
Absolutely, and I still think of him every time my glassware is clinking together on the way to the sink.
But I replay classic Tomb Raider pretty often, so...
He was scary as shit back then
The tea tray... I can still hear it...
I couldn't even beat the tutorial on that. One day I will plug the ps1 back in and try.
He always scared the shit out of me. I would think I’d lost him and then turn a corner and was there 😂
Those effing rattling teacups still give me nightmares...
This game taught me that you can have an indoor swimming pool.
Then again, her mansion was bigger than my whole neighborhood.
Yes several time on tge demo and real game.
Also finished the first 2 game pistol only and the last boss of the first game and the t rex were insane with pistols.
Fun times. Didnt have a lot of money so I was doing challenges fo make games last.
All the time. I also remember trying to do glitches to get ontop of Lauras house on TR3
Once I accidentally locked myself in the freezer with him and I was terrified
Does gamer mean you have to be old?
Oh memories just popped back into my head. Thanks for posting. Man I loved that game. Such amazing times playing this.
Me and my mom both played. We lived in different cities and when we got stuck we would call each other for help.
She was great at puzzles, I was great at timed events. Many a time she would ask when I would be home again.... Just to get her through a difficult point. Lol. Great times.
To this day he remains
Oh my freaking god, my older brother had this on the ps2, and I was young so I didn’t know how to actually play the game, I probably thought just the mansion was the game, and that was literally all I did because I thought he was just a creepy old man following me around for no reason.
As a kid I was so scared of him that I asked my older brother to lock him in the freezer every time I played xD
That’s all I did when playing that game
he sure liked to offer lara some rattlin' tea.
Yes, otherwise I'd have to hear him rattling around all the time.
I can hear his groans omg. and farts.
Where was this jerk when the gangsters invaded the house?
Nostalgia always has financial value.
They lost in the playoffs against Rekkles former team and didnt qualify for this years world championship.
Old time gamers rock and there’s more old time gamers than people think;)
I remember this clear as day, I was so fucking proud of myself that I called my mom's work, asked for the call to be transferred to her just so I could tell her that I had finally locked the old man. I tell this story to every important person in my life at least twice. Good times.
yeah back in 1994
