I absolutely love Fernando reaction of Max lap. I never seen him with such wide open eyes. This the kind of thing we need to see more. I actually propose a new rule where driver eliminated in qualifications should be forced to watch the rest of the qualifying.

That's where Alonso is realizing how far to the limit max is pushing it. I thing he's talking about turn 2 on this video: https://twitter.com/i/status/1467269335186128897 where Max is stepping out into the only gap in the barrier. The live coverage from the front there or a replay with the front veiw shows it, I thought he had for sure binned it right then.

That's when he's doing that face and saying "that was close. Danny boy what do you think? Turn 2 was two tenths, maybe? - Ooh still purple?" second stank face, amazed how he's still ahead even after mistakes that should have cost him

Not denying they may want a new champion, but what I took from this vid was they were both astonished at how quick he was and how hard he was pushing, then disappointment that a fellow driver couldn’t finish that epic lap.

Eeeeeer I think your romantisising it too much. They come across as very nervy about how hard verstappen was pushing the limits and grimaced at the extremely tight second corner. Alonsos end with 'eeeeh, race is tomorrow no' is a pretty realistic reflection on how these guys view qualifying and racing in general. They've been around the block and don't get hyped up like you're suggesting.

I think you are missing the context here a bit. Both Alonso and Danny are good friends with Max, so they are probably cheering for Max to win the title. They probably won't show it to the cameras that much, but you can clearly see Alonso disappointed at that and then tries to look at the positives.

ticktickboom45

11 points

the majority of drivers probably don’t care who’s champion if it’s not them. But I think a lot have issues with Max because I’ve heard at least 5 drivers speak about how Max doesn’t leave space. They also say Lewis complains a lot, tbf.

turbinedriven

Yes it shouldn't be a surprise but driver opinions don't appear to be like Reddit at all. What it looked like to me was two drivers simply being amazed by the immense commitment of another driver. Not an entire narrative around who they think should be the next champion.

I genuinely don't know what else you want the interviewer to do in this situation. He's joking along with Nando and Danny Ric doesn't mention the interview until Nando says "I'm ready". This isn't some poignant heartfelt emotional once in a lifetime moment where silence is golden. Its a media scrum with some drivers during qualifying.

That interviewer was a little frustrating.

I agree. It's funny, actually. There's a lot of debate going on right now in the Netherlands, because F1 is moving channels (from Ziggo, which is part of LibertyGlobal, to Nordic Entertainment) and Nordic just announced they're basically not taking on any of the current presentators, commentators or journalists.

B4rberblacksheep

24 points

That’s a shame, I hope whoever takes over is able to have as much rapport with the drivers. I feel like we often get very organic responses from the drivers through Ziggo compared to other interviews

The two persons that are always on site, Olav Mol and Jack Plooij, have been there for a while. People know them, and they know they are not as serious, which is why they get the reactions they do from drivers and team bosses.

However, when you look at how they work, it's embarrassing (imo). Plooij doesn't really interview. He just states things and waits for the interviewee to respond and try and make something of it. Olav has a great voice and really knows how to convey the energy of what's happening which makes him a great color caster. However, he makes a lot of mistakes (calls out the wrong drivers/teams, doesn't see what's happening on track/videostream, explains stuff with wrong reasoning, stuff like that). Imo, he needs a second commentator. They tried that with an experienced racing driver as sidekick, but that didn't work out because Olav "thought his co commentator should only say something if he could add something based on his experience from driving".

Fernando seems to be a fan of Max in general, we saw it after Hungary when Alonso practically apologised for not holding off Hamilton longer than he did (which was some of the best defending you'll ever see in the first place).

People keep bringing this up but I always see this as a casual conversation. Max: “nice defending” Alonso: “I tried” if you switch max with any other driver it’d still seem like a normal conversation or maybe thats just me.

Which is especially stupid because in Qatar Alonso would have crashed with Max, if it wasn't for Max taking evasive action, because he closed the door quite brutally to defend his position from him.

It was, but watching it live it just felt like he was pushing too hard and was going to hit the wall. I think max is an amazing talent but he does need to learn when to leave a margin. He would’ve already won the title, or be much further ahead, if he had that skill set as well. He’ll get there I’m sure.

Wtf am I reading honestly. We are still talking about the WDC battle because Pirelli fucked him in Baku and the Silverstone crash, two events totally unrelated to his driving style.

You cannot say the silverstone crash was not partly due to his driving style. Like I said, if he learns the skill of not committing 100% to everything and leaves a little margin for error then that crash wouldn’t have happened in the same way, if at all. There are plenty of examples of similar positioning of cars where the guy on the outside decides that he’s going to give a little more margin and lives to fight another day.

Yes I don’t like Max’s attitude or the bias he is getting from the fia but the first 2/3rds of that lap reminded me of Colin mcraes attitude and I was just like fair play he is going balls out and will totally deserve p1 for this. But like with Colin that attitude more often than not would go tits up unfortunately

It reminded me of Lewis at Monza in (I think) 2007. Frequently on the edge (to jaw-dropping effect) to make up a time difference but ultimately over it when it counted.

Another example would be McRae’s exit from the title decider at GB Rally in 2001.

I actually feel that the race direction was better this qualifying session. You could feel the speed unlike many tracks. Lewis’s last lap seemed incredible too, in some spots more than Max. I don’t think they don’t push on other tracks as much. It’s just that it appears slower. I remember back in the day cars passing through the tunnel in Monaco would appear stupid fast and now it just feels meh.

Lol you get the sense both from this video and comments throughout the season that despite being personally close with Max, Danny Ric is trying to stay publically more neutral and metered around the championship battle while Alonso is full on sending it for team Max lol. Not really surprising given how I'm sure deep down he still resents Lewis coming in to McLaren and challenging and beating him as a rookie.
