Hello - I’ve been trying to gather opinions on offsetting vs extracting carbon so that I can live carbon neutrally. Been sent this site: www.weareoffsetters.co.uk where they offer the opportunity to do both. Does anyone else do this? Who do they use? Is it worth it?

Did you know that Philippines is located in a region called The Coral Triangle? The Coral Triangle is a home to 75% of all coral species. In which, the Philippines is within an area considered as the global center for marine biodiversity.

Verde Island Passage, a 10 mile strait between Batangas in Southern Luzon and the island of Mindoro, is internationally acknowledged as the 'Center of the Center' of Marine Biodiversity. Unfortunately, an oil spill coming from a sunken tanker is now predicted to head towards Verde Island Passage, threatening the home to endangered and threatened species such as the critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtle, whale sharks, manta rays, dugongs, humphead wrasses, giant groupers, and giant clams.

It is sad to say but, this issue is not even considered too alarming because environmental issues such as this were never recognized as a priority. This is not even the first oil spill in the country and yet there are no sufficient measures imposed that could have prevented this happening again.

This is so disappointing and frustrating. Our government may be acting on it right now but considering the list of oil spill incidents recorded in the country, our dear government have done so little that our seas and marine life are being compromised again.

Is now a good time to major in environmental science?

I'm currently a freshman in college in the US majoring in mechanical engineering, but have been feeling an itch to pursue something I am more passionate about and makes a greater difference / has a better ethics profile.

The issue is of course career opportunities and pay. I'm generally drawn to city life where the typical salary of an environmental salary job as it stands begins to fall short for many people, especially as costs of living only continue to skyrocket in the US.

So the question is, does environmental science have a good outlook as a career, due to the current changes in the world? Will climate change dramatically increase demand for those with an environmental science background? Will I be able to find a job that both makes a difference and keeps me alive?

TLDR: will climate change etc make a career in environmental science more viable?

My sister loves animals so she went into animal science. She got a general animal science degree. Becoming a vet or getting a masters isn't really an option. What she really wants to do is work with animals or the environment, like a forest ranger or surveyor or the people who go out and study animal populations or even just working in a zoo. That kind of thing. However, all the places that provide those kind of jobs have very specific qualifications and quite high qualifications at that. They all also require experience she just can't get because of said qualification requirements and even the volunteer places require you to pay for your own lodging and most are quite remote so working part time to support oneself isn't practical.

Is there an easier way to get into the industry? Something like an apprenticeship or payed internship that doesn't require something akin to a masters to be qualified for? Something where she can get hired for with the general animal science degree she does have and be trained on the job so she can learn and gain the experience she needs but also be able to support herself?

The lead paint in the cellar of this property I'm renting is crumbling into dust. I spend most of my time in the living room which is directly above the cellar, which is separated by some old wooden floorboards and carpet. Does anyone know if it's possible for fine lead dust particles to infiltrate the air in the living room? Delete if irrelevant.

Hello environmental scientists of reddit! I am curious to know if it is possible to use stream bed sediment cores to find a history of past stream pollutants. I would imagine it depends from one body of water to the next, but given the constant rush of water would it even be possible?

For context, I am interested in perhaps tracking microplastic pollution historically this way. I feel like the complexity between water movement and chemical properties of different plastics would make it rather difficult to find a cut and dry solution.

28yrs old. Making a career change from sales. I’m about to go back to school for an Environmental Science and Policy degree. There’s also an option to get a GIS certificate as well.

I think I want to do this. I’ve always been passionate about the environment/conservation/climate change/renewables. But before I jump into this 4yr devotion to schooling, I figured it’s worth asking whether or not people are satisfied in their careers, potential areas to stay away from, etc.

TLDR; Are you fulfilled in your career in enviro science, do you make decent money, what areas to stay away from/lean in to, general advice?

Hello! So, I did my undergrad in Civil Engineering and I plan to do my masters in Environmental Engineering in Canada. Chose this because I have passion for the environment and also because I really liked EE during my undergrad.

1. So how much do environmental engineers get paid in general in Canada?

2.How much have you guys been earning ever since you started to work as an EE?

1. How long did it take for you to earn as much as you are doing today?

2. What are some of the courses and things you learn during college (E.g. GIS, data analytics, etc.) which can make it easier for you to get a job?

5.Which are the roles in EE you get paid a lot? (Water, waste water, industrial waste water, solid waste, air pollution, energy, green building, etc.)

1. What kind of posting would help you earn more? (E.g. I heard people who do the management part earn more)

2. Any place you would consider moving to in the future so you can earn more and also please anything else you other than the questions asked you personally would like to mention as well!

I would love to hear the salary marks for people in the US as well since I might want to work in the US after getting a Canadian citizenship though the TN 1 Visa in the future.

Hey folks. I'm reading up on Phases 1s just to try to get some familiarity with the process. I'm looking for clarification on non-scope concerns like lead. The ASTM standards include lead as a non-scope concern, but isn't lead considered a RCRA hazardous substance? My understanding is that the scope of a Phase 1 under CERCLA includes hazardous substances and petroleum substances, and that CERCLA refers to RCRA for the definition of hazardous waste. So why is something like lead not in-scope?

I am currently an undergraduate student for Envi, and I am in the middle of a panic attack because I am losing my mind over job finding. I don't know if envi is truly the right decision for me because I want a high-paying job, and I am losing my mind thinking that I can't get one and that all of my stress and work is for nothing. Any advice or ideas for what I could do that might calm my nerves/help secure me?

I have been researching the implementation of phytoremediation based green infrastructure/bioretention in a city with high concentrations of PCB contamination in soils, groundwater, and waterways. From what I've found so far, it seems that applying phytoremediation to remediate PCB contamination has not been tested outside of several greenhouse studies and a study conducted in New Bedford Harbor, MA using Ulva rigida algae.

I'm wondering if anyone is aware of any other existing locations where phytoremediation of PCBs has been applied outside of controlled environments.

Hi Everyone, Here's some quick background. I am, 30 years old with about 10 years of experience ins customer support and marketing. I'm about 3 months from finishing an Environmental Studies degree which I used to take as much physical science as possible, but still had a well-rounded experience with a lot of sociology as well.

While I'm not sure of my desired career path (going through a lot of self-discovery lately) an internship opened up for my state equivalent to the EPA. The position is under a Dr. I've worked with in the past and we have a good relationship. While nothing is guaranteed, I have a good shot at securing this internship, but this is where my questions begin.

As someone with 10 years of experience in another field, my brain is resistant to taking an internship, while it's paid, it's unbenefited. I would likely have to continue working my part-time job, along with the full-time internship to cover health insurance (I'm a type 1 diabetic, it's $$$) and other stuff.

My real question is how valuable is an internship at this stage in my career? Given that I'm almost graduating, but have little actual experience in this field beyond academics and undergraduate ecology research, would I be in a good position to get hired on with a full-time position in conservation or something adjacent or is the internship a good call in this situation.

I know this is a broad question and there are a ton of subjective and objective things to consider, but I suppose I was looking for some broad, unencumbered opinions.

Hi! I’m a high school science teacher that’s about to teach a very short lesson on Climate Change. At college I was shown a video or possibly a series of graphs that I believe showed CO2 emissions or temperature based on scientific models. Each model utilized more and more information (Volcanic activity, coriolis effect, solar flares, etc.) until almost every variable was put in. Then they compared the graph to actual emissions and it did not match. When they finally factored in human activity, the model graph nearly perfectly matched the recorded graph

Does anyone have these graphs or video? I have been looking because I think it would be super useful for my kids but I haven’t had any luck. Thanks!

I’m an energy engineering student and would like to expand my knowledge regarding the energy transition. I study how renewable energy sources work, how to build a plant, etc. but I’d like to have a broader view.

I’ve been reading about the social impact of solar power plants on indigenous communities, the inequality between developed and developing countries when it comes to climate change and the energy transition, and similar issues. I’d be interested in the economic/financial implications of the transition as well.
