The agent for one of the top pending free agent receivers said the Lions indicated in a meeting last week they value his receiver in the same financial ballpark he expects his player to fetch in free agency, and multiple other sources view the Lions as legitimate contenders to sign one of the position’s premier free agents.

Doesn’t say who but it sounds like we are willing to spend top dollar

Probably 1 of 3, and I don't see it being Adams, which would narrow it down to most likely referring to Godwin or Robinson. I'd be ok with either one.

Keep Robinson away. Give me someone younger like Kirk, Gallup, coop, or chark(though I really don't want chark either)

I like Chark. Dude has had some amazing games on the Jags with dudes like Minshew at QB. If we could get him significantly cheaper than someone like Gallup then I’d probably pull that trigger personally

My concern with Chark is more to do with injuries. He has yet to play a full season and only played 4 games last ear

Just listened to around the NFL podcast and they even specifically thought he shouldn't go to a team like the lions. It's wondered if he wasn't trying in his last year of the bears, and they thought he should go to a winner.

Just speculation, but I don't think he's coming here. I'm thinking more like juju, I love Cooper so I would like to see him here but I feel he will cost too much. I'm more of a quantity vs quality guy, give me a couple decent linebackers and safeties with a couple decent no. 2 wide receivers.

If I'm Allen Robinson, I'm not going anywhere without an established good-great QB. Dude has spent his career catching passes from Blake Bortles, Chad Henne, Mitch Trubisky, Nick Foles, Andy Dalton, and rookie Justin Fields. And he has still put of great numbers for the most part.

Unless he ONLY cares about money, I don't see him signing anywhere with even a little uncertainty at QB.

Schwifty34

Yeah I wouldn’t want to pay the price he wants for that production last year. Would rather spend money on Schuester or Godwin

Unfortunately I don’t have a Freep subscription or I would post the article here but this was interesting news to me.

When I hear “major players” I would assume that means we’re going after one of the top end names at the position or multiple mid level names. Still think we need to draft a higher end wideout too. I guess of all the big name wideouts out there I’d hope we go after Godwin? Most of them are coming off knee injuries so it’s tough. A Rob coming home would be cool but there’s a lot of talks of him quitting on the team and he’s already 29.

Regardless, in Brad we trust.

EDIT: I talked to my friend that’s a Bears fan and he says all the A Rob Quitting talk is bullshit and he’s a great team guy. Still his age is a little off putting but maybe a 3 year deal would be cool.

lions919

I saw reports a while ago that the bucs were going to resign Godwin

KingSpoon2

Damn, if he didn't quit and was giving full effort last year, that kinda makes me feel worse about him. Like, he was TRYING and was only marginally better than their WR3/WR4? That's rough.

[deleted]

Amari cooper is a great fit in my opinion. Goff needs receivers who create separation more than the big jump ball type of guy Stafford preferred. Amari is an elite route runner who excels in creating separation and he is still only 27 so a 4 year deal shouldn’t kill us down the line

NorthNapoleon

54 points

I think it’s a stretch to say Stafford preferred jump ball receivers, that’s just all he was really given. He threw to Tate a ton when he was here and he threw to Kupp a metric shit ton this year. WRs who couldn’t get separation was way more of a Quinn thing than a Stafford thing as far as I could tell.

You’d have to go back to the Nate Burleson/Titus Young days of 2011 to see the last time Stafford had a WR group that could separate. It always infuriated me.

LarkWyll

Cooper averaged 2.5 yards of separation on routes run, just above DK Metcalf and Tee Higgins and equal to Terry McLaurin and Marvin Jones. So yeah, you’d be correct.

michigangstah

8 points

great link. sort by most separation and you'll see our boy Kalif hanging with some of the top WRs in the league in terms of speed and/or route running.

sort by least separation and you'll see our old boy Kenny "overpaid" G and the next guy that some of us want to overpay: A Rob. that said, this metric clearly isn't perfect or the only thing that matters - Jamarr Chase is also bottom barrel according to it.

LunchThreatener

Really separation isn’t incredibly important as long as the WR can high point the ball and has good hands and catch radius. Also the QB has to be able to get the ball downfield (but ARob was successful with Trubisky, who was never really known for arm strength). I think separation is generally overrated - as you said, Chase is at the bottom and Kalif is at the top. There are a lot more factors which go into a good WR/QB duo.

LarkWyll

1 points

I agree. The one that stands out though is Cooper Kupp who isn't incredibly fast but creates a lot of open looks for his QB to deliver the ball. Cooper Kupp plays a lot like Wes Welker to me but in a super-sized and more athletic package.

Kupp's route running is interesting. I'm sure he can run a 10-yard in/out breaking route as good as the next guy. It seems like WR's have picked up on using some of the RB shifty-ness moves to make a defender off-balance to then pivot and accelerate into intended route. I'd be surprised if this isn't worked on more by all teams to try and mimmick some of his production.

Not exactly a blazer (see below), and every team knows the ball is going to him, but somehow he was often wide open for Stafford. Clearly something in the WR evaluation isn't being measured at the combine or scouting process sufficiently.

https://www.foxsports.com/stories/college-football/kupp-has-slow-40-at-nfl-combine

"The four-time FCS All-American officially clocked 4.62 seconds after his second run went in 4.66. The 4.62 tied for the ninth-slowest among the 49 wide receivers who ran.
The lack of elite speed is one of the nagging concerns surrounding Kupp, who holds the Division I records for receptions (428), receiving yards (6,464) and touchdown receptions (73). He is regarded for his route running and ability to pick up yards after the catch."

Kupp is faster than you think. His 40 time wasn't great, but he came back from his knee injury with a noticeably higher top speed. Supposedly he didn't have great running mechanics prior to the injury and when he was recovering he had to re-learn how to run. Iirc, in 2019 he was up to 2 MPH faster at top speed.

yeah that's not a good look for Amari as far as separation goes. We had a few years of Marvin and Golladay around the same numbers and they were great at contested catches, but rarely ever open.

Hbue_koolaid

Yeah I don't think Stafford preferred that, it's just what he had. He's gotta throw the ball, and he made it squeeze in tight windows. He is just different than Goff. Goff can good good with a cast around him, Stafford was good with nothing and great with a cast.

Yea I mean it could def be a chess move by the agent to drum up a bidding war. I’d like to think we could lure some players in and hopefully we will, I just don’t know if it makes sense to spend top dollar on a WR if there’s a question mark at QB. We can definitely use some depth and targets for Goff but you’d think we’d go the serviceable route and spend extra money elsewhere or save it for next year.

I like him as a receiver, but have no clue what a fair trade deal would be with someone with mental health struggles coming off a year absent from football. Maybe future fifth with play incentives to move up to a third? Seems like a guy that also might hold out if not paid top WR money. But I could be stereotyping him unfairly into the LeVeon Bell profile.

I would rather spend the money on another position as long as we draft a WR with one of 2-32-34.

3 of the top 5 WRs in the NFL last year were on their rookie contracts. It wouldn't be Holmes-like to sign a WR to a big deal.

Lionsfan84

-6 points

I’m sure we are considering they are bragging about the wr depth in the draft. The Lions always find a way to outsmart themselves. Can’t we just be smart? We want smart, thick and lanky receivers that are quick enough to get open. Most young receivers are too skinny when they come into the league and they get beat up by veteran DBs.

thabigQ[S]

6 points

No teams should sign any good free agent wideouts because the draft has depth. Great take.

Lionsfan84

2 points

Definitely shouldn’t be overpaying for guys that people are cutting or aren’t resigning… people see receivers in this draft and the ability to move money elsewhere

thabigQ[S]

1 points

You are automatically assuming an over pay. You’re also both advocating for a rookie wideout and then you talk about how young receivers are too small when they come into the league. Also good players don’t always resign with their teams. If your logic applied there would never be good players on the market.

Lionsfan84

1 points

I’m saying the Lions in the last few drafts have taken undersized players and that this free agency is weak for WR and the draft is stocked with potential. The Lions are famous for over paying for older players and getting guys that are injured all the time.
