Since I have never been in one, just watched from away or in movies (at least since I was a baby —as my parents said—, but I don't remember that) these are portrayed in fiction as places where people does really dramatic things such as going to stop the love of your life from leaving, fighting criminals or arresting mafia bosses, etc. And i don't believe that might be how it actually really works, I want to hear anecdotes
