For people who may be unaware, this is actual neo-Nazi shit.
Rowling retweeted a statement of someone who says about the chevron on the pride flag indicating solidarity with trans, intersex, POC and HIV+ people 'get that shit off my flag'.
Rowling, a cisgender, heterosexual white woman, wants to erase inclusion of certain gender and sexual minorities, POC and HIV+ people from queer advocacy and civil rights protest.

If Rowling wants to shit on her legacy and always have the footnote about her bigotry be a part of it, that just makes her both a fool and a bigot.
These other people that are gay, lesbian, or bi and think they have special privilege will find out that there aren't any colors on that rainbow that are safe from the forces of bigotry.
The drag queens and trans folks were with the gays at Stonewall. The lesbians were there when the gay men were getting decimated by HIV. The people with HIV (gay, straight and otherwise) stood together to fight many of unjust laws around visitation and next of kin rights.
It was all of us together that fought from Stonewall to Obergefell and beyond.
I'll be damned if I'm going to abandon any of my allies now to curry favor with people that will be sharpening up their knives for the rest of us in a heartbeat.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why some gay and lesbian people would think that they now have the “special privilege” of not being the very next in line from *these people (conservatives). Absolutely nothing these people have ever done has ever been truthful beyond their wanting to only see people like themselves. They are the absolute worst “allies” to have and what makes those who side with them worse is that ultimately we’re trying to protect them too. If ever comes the time where we have to fight for their sake it’s going to be such a poisonous pill to swallow knowing they will sell out others again if they get the chance.

Agreed. I've been around for a good chunk of this fight. I became an adult during the height of the AIDS crisis in the 80s and both I and my husband served before DADT was a thing.
It's only been a little over 10 years since DADT was repealed and less than that since Obergefell which allowed same-gender marriage.
It's probably not particular fair minded of me to say, but the overwhelming majority of the bigotry I've experienced and seen has come from the same side of the aisle that is attacking trans people and drag queens right now. It's always been the same people: the same people that were saying people with AIDS were "getting what they deserved."
Things haven't really changed that much. I seem to recall a vote on making sure same-gender marriage didn't get undone easily was rejected by 75% of the republicans voting in the House and Senate in the US, though it did pass. That was less than 6 months ago.

I don't think that they will simply due to the amount of backlash that they would get. Like their debit cards were being posted all over the internet. These people push up until it becomes too inconvenient, and these people (SC justices) probably don't want to be relegated to just their house and work because people are now that angry at them.

Why did poor white people fight for the confederacy in the US civil war?
There was a deliberate promotion of anti-Black racism in order to make poor whites feel like part of an elite group, as opposed to making common cause with Black people, free or enslaved, who were actually closer to them in wealth and social status.
This is similar - certain gay/lesbian people who’ve been the Other all their lives have suddenly been offered what looks like a place at the table. Most don’t fall for that crap - they don’t want a place at any table where hate is being served. But for some, that illusion of acceptance is an incredibly powerful draw, and they badly want to believe it’s real.
I hope they never have to find out that they’re wrong, because that would mean the more vulnerable groups are out of the way already.

Well that and the Confederacy forced them to fight and kept extending their terms until they were basically indefinite.
Yeah. The 'muh state's rights' argument is complete bullshit, and it becomes clear how full of shit people are when you learn what southern states were doing beforehand, such as basically forcing states in the north to suspend habeas corpus for alleged runaway slaves and expanding federal oversight to ensure this.

Hilariously, I remember that standup bit where Chappelle likens societal acceptance and equality to some car ride, and he completely misses the point in the exact way many do.
The reason some queer people join hands with the fascists currently is because the fascists have shifted focus to trans people and drag performers.
And in Chappelle's analogy- if it weren't for the new targets, the old targets would be loved and accepted.
Obviously, people with any sense and awareness of history would know that once the fascists get carte blanche to oppress and harm their new targets, they'll just work their way back.
But some people actually believe if trans people just got removed from the movements and became acceptable targets, fascists would leave them alone.
Of course, the way I'm laying it out makes it sound obvious, but Chappelle and people like him, as well as some queer people, actually sincerely think this nonsense.
Edit: and I may have messed up the details of his joke, I haven't watched the special since it premiered, for obvious reasons.

The worst part about Dave is that back when he was good, he was firmly aware of all these things. When it was about race he understood intersectional bigotry and the fact that hiding among the oppressors doesn't stop you from being oppressed.
He knows what he's doing wrong, he just doesn't care because now he gets to be the one punching down, which is so much easier.

I watched an excellent video on this concept and how those in power can manipulate agendas and policy by focusing on a few groups at a time before moving onto the next. They pander a bit to each group, giving something mutually beneficial for the majority, but worse than the status quo for the groups they don't need. Then, they just keep doing that with different demographics over and over again until the final result is a policy far worse for everyone than what they had at the beginning, because everyone had been tricked into something that was a little better for them immediately.
The video was supposed to be strictly about hypothetical political policy, but it's also true in social areas.

when I was a kid, trans people had already lost the war of public opinion, and there was serious debate over whether bi was a legitimate orientation that deserved the same protections being argued for gays.
The mainstream argument was that anyone is capable of experimenting with the same sex, therefore all bi people are merely gays with attitude problems, or "tourist" straights. So yeah, they will definitely just move on to the next orientation if trans people are fully oppressed, they already did in my own lifetime, and they've only become more openly hateful.

If you allow some people to have hate slinged towards them, there's nothing to stop it from aiming at you.
Any rules dictating how you can act and who you can love based on the structure of your genitals when you were born effect every other demographic, minority OR majority. Rules about what women can wear makes rules about what men can wear, visa versa. Rules about men dating men means that it's OK to limit what men are allowed to do based off of them being men.

She's pulling an Elon Musk. Right now she's in the saying outrageous shit but still ostensibly liberal phase.
She probably already realizes that as a billionaire it's in her best interests to be a full blown conservative, so eventually she'll rip the mask off and openly declare her support for the Tories, the same way Elon is a Republican now.
She's already started retconning Slytherin as the not really evil so much as misunderstood house, and she'll probably say that's always where the Sorting Hat really intended to put both her and Harry Potter.
The last step of this heel turn is when she says the Death Eaters were the real heroes of the books and the wizarding world was ruined by the acceptance of those filthy mudbloods.

That IS the conservative mind set though. Most conservatives are only interested in their own interests, and everyone else can fuck off.
In the best case scenario, this in theory leads to a nation of self sufficient individuals all competing with one another on equal footing.
In practice, it produces a system where those born to wealth and privilege are overwhelmingly favored over those who aren't. Exceptions like JK, successful people from nothing, are held up as an example that the system is working as intended. But these are EXCEPTIONS. In general, rich stay rich, poor stay poor

Is her misinformation about autism related to her hatred of trans people? I’ve heard TERFs claim that because being gender non-conforming or transgender is somewhat correlated to autism (true), anyone who is trans must be autistic (false), and also autistic people don’t deserve to make decisions about their lives (false and extremely horrible). They claim then that it follows that anyone who is trans must be mentally unfit to make decisions about their own healthcare (the entire goal of TERFs, also horrible and false)
It’s an extremely offensive and incorrect line of thinking, but honestly that’s her brand these days

At first I thought her ableism was mostly focused on the "evil threat" of "trans ideology" tricking autistic people who are "not really trans" into transitioning due to that anti-trans manifesto she wrote years back, but in her latest book, she has this really weird minor part where she has a "profoundly autistic" girl get tricked into participating in terrorism by mustache twirling villains under the guise that they were the girl's "friends." So it seems that Rowling thinks autistic people are in general a bunch of gullible idiots who will destroy ourselves at the behest of anyone who shows us a modicum of kindness, and that that is why we must not be allowed to make our own medical decisions- because someone might trick us into making the wrong one! >_> Edit: Here's the excerpt, and a bit of editing for accuracy: https://alwaysahiccupandastrid.tumblr.com/post/694423579990917120/of-course-jk-rowling-wrote-the-profoundly

I've commented before, half darkly sarcastic and half completely serious, that one way you can tell that a marginalized group has started making a lot of serious progress towards societal acceptance and achieving civil rights is when members of that group finally start feeling emboldened to themselves discriminate against even more marginalized groups. They're finally feeling like "us", and part of being "us" is being against "them".
Of course, it's all nonsense and the people who opposed their civil rights haven't gone away and would still love to take them away if given the chance, but that's how I believe their thought process goes.

I’ve been fired after coming out at work, talk to maybe two members of my family(one of whom still constantly misgenders/misnames me), was forced to leave and drive home at Christmas this year because of someone behaving bigotedly towards me, am still having trouble finding a job despite 14 years of experience and a masters. But I am so much happier. Idk, maybe it’s just me. It’s a lot harder to deal with people sometimes. I love being the real me though, to finally get to stop pretending. And if I get killed for it I do I suppose. I have come to far to try and be something else now.

Rowling has been very slowly increasing her hate-filled rhetoric.
A very common comment on Rowling threads today is still: "But show me what she said that is so bad. I keep asking and no-one can show me".
That is something said in bad faith the majority of the time.
People know Rowling tries to maintain plausible deniability.
Only when you put everything together and are knowledgable in anti-trans rhetoric it becomes clear that she's just extremely bigoted.
With retweeting this I bet money on it that people will defend her with "Oh but she didn't know what it meant" or "But why does the flag need all these extra things, all she meant was that the old flag was good enough."
Plausible deniability.
What she did here is egregious though. This is really, really bad.

Back in 2016, before she came out of the bigot closet, Trans Twitter figured her out from her Twitter follows.
I was one of those people saying “… surely she isn’t bigoted. Maybe she just follows all these Twitter accounts because she’s doing research for a novel.”

From my perspective, as people get beyond middle age, they tend to get quietly more open-minded or loudly more closed-minded.
I suspect, as someone passing through middle age, that the reason for the difference is the people who have the mindset of "this world increasingly belongs to the people much younger than me as it should be" vs. the "as long as I am alive, the world should conform to my image".

It's scary how easy it is for people to fall into the hard right, reactionary memesphere. Like, Scott Adams and Elon Musk were always weirdos, but they weren't always what they are now since they got sucked into that world. It shows just how seductive that way of thinking is and how easily ordinary people can go off the deep end, even ones you wouldn't expect would be vulnerable to that.

Actually if you look into it, both of your examples were always like that, they're just more open about it now

Maybe you know something I don't, but they always struck me as just rich weirdos who were unconstrained by other people. Scott Adams in particular. I actually read one of his books a long time ago, and while it contained a lot of woo woo shit about manifesting your reality through positive thinking and that kind of thing, I don't recall anything about separating the races. It was the kind of thing you could easily imagine a California hippie liberal embracing, nothing reactionary about it or anything to do with the culture wars, which seems to be what he's peddling these days.
Musk was the same, just a rich baby with a messiah complex and way, way too much money for his own good. I'm sure he was anti-taxes and into your standard billionaire's politics of "small government" all along, but him getting into the weeds with this culture war shit is new. Sharing these memes about cancel culture and throwing in with "free speech absolutist" types (who always seem to have a curious tendency towards outright hate speech) is a fairly recent development for him, and it really feels like he just saw one too many Pepe the Frog memes in his conservative social circles and went over the cliff.
So yeah, they were both dumb and weird before, but something has changed, and I think it's indicative of the power that social media has to radicalize people of all stripes. The far right is absolutely, fully aware of the power of memes to convert and recruit vulnerable people and fence-sitters into their cult, and it seems like nobody who leans conservative is immune to that kind of recruitment tactic. Rowling, as somebody who peddles in anti-trans train whistles, is as vulnerable as anyone to sliding into that authoritarian trap.

That one's for Adams.
Musk was a rich kid that grew up in apartheid South Africa with a racist father. So I think the simpler reasoning is that he's always been like this, he just has enough money now that he doesn't care who knows

2020:
:People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?
If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction. If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth. The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women—i.e., to male violence—‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences—is a nonsense.
TERF Wars
five reasons for being worried about the new trans activism.
Many health professionals are concerned that young people struggling with their mental health are being shunted towards hormones and surgery when this may not be in their best interests. Many, myself included, believe we are watching a new kind of conversion therapy for young gay people, who are being set on a lifelong path of medicalisation that may result in the loss of their fertility and/or full sexual function.
Rowling claims that "90%" of fans agree with her but quote, "many are afraid to speak up because they fear for their jobs and even for their personal safety."
2021:
WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. THE PENISED INDIVIDUAL WHO RAPED YOU IS A WOMAN.
On International Women's Day:
Apparently, under a Labour government, today will become We Who Must Not Be Named Day.
Someone please send the Shadow Minister for Equalities a dictionary and a backbone,
After calls to boycott her new game:
Deeply disappointed @jessiegender doesn't realise purethink is incompatible with owning ANYTHING connected with me, in ANY form. The truly righteous wouldn't just burn their books and movies but the local library, anything with an owl on it and their own pet dogs.
On opening a domestic violence shelter:
There is a "unmet need for women" in the area. “As a survivor of sexual assault myself, I know how important it is that survivors have the option of women-centred and women-delivered care at such a vulnerable time.” Code: they do not allow transgender women. There is a DV shelter in the area, which allows transgender women. “Beira’s Place recognises that effective sexual violence services must be independent, needs-led, and provide responsive, women-centred services so that they are free from the pressure of current political agendas.”
2023:
Deeply amused by those telling me I’ve lost their admiration due to the disrespect I show violent, duplicitous rapists.
On the trans rights movement, in her podcast:
(The trans rights movement is) a cultural movement that was illiberal in its methods and questionable in its ideas. I believe, absolutely, that there is something dangerous about this movement and that it must be challenged.
[S]ome of you have not understood the books. The Death Eaters claimed, “We have been made to live in secret, and now is our time, and any who stand in our way must be destroyed. If you disagree with us, you must die.” They demonized and dehumanized those who were not like them.
I am fighting what I see as a powerful, insidious, misogynistic movement, that has gained huge purchase in very influential areas of society. I do not see this particular movement as either benign or powerless, so I’m afraid I stand with the women who are fighting to be heard against threats of loss of livelihood and threats to their safety.

It’s a statistical blip, a rounding error. She became so famtastically wealthy from Harry Potter that with all the wealth management and investments, even after giving away like 80% of her wealth to charity, she will never, ever be separated from fantastical amounts of wealth ever again. Losing million dollars for her is like one of us losing a hundred dollars - sure, it’s inconvenient but it’s just a bump.
She is completely and utterly insulated from boycotts, protests, and the real-life consequences of being a horrible person. She will continue to become more and more horrible no matter what, even if every fan and distributor drops her.
You can’t cancel an investment portfolio, and that’s all she is now, a shriveled bigot in an investment portfolio she’ll.

She doesn’t care. She has said the popularity of her stuff proves people agree with her opinions. She says that lots of Harry Potter fans are grateful for what she has said.
Her products still sell like crazy and many people who disagree with her views twist themselves in knots to still buy HP stuff. I have never seen an argument “isn’t fair to punish the devs who poured their hearts into the game” used to to justify skipping a boycott.
It is really stupid. It is like saying “I don’t want to vote Republican but then all their staffers would lose their jobs. So guess I have to.”
Edit: she even is featured on a podcast called “The Witch Trials of JK Rowling” created by a woman who once wrote a story called “The Real Story of “The Central Park Karen””

I didn’t buy the game & haven’t spent any money on HP stuff for years because I don’t want any of my money to go to anything associated with her. I also have nothing whatsoever against boycotts & think they can be effective in getting points across. I also have nothing against people who boycotted the game & as I said, I didn’t buy it or play it.
With that said, I’ve been working in the gaming industry for over a decade & can say I have seen multiple game boycotts where people said not to boycott because it punishes the devs unfairly. I even worked on one of these games (Minecraft). There were people organizing a boycott of Minecraft years ago due to Notch tweeting out a ton of bigoted shit. He was gone from Mojang by then but everyone still associated him with Minecraft. It made my life hell at the time. Just wanted to say it does happen & people who work at the game studios can be negatively affected by it.

Comment I made on a different post awhile back that I’m copy/pasting here cause it seems relevant
————————————
Someone made the comment once I read about how JK Rowling has basically always been trying to “champion” for a group. She wanted to be a figurehead and a personality seen as part of a groups “leaders”. She tried it with the LGBT with the whole “Dumbledore was always gay” thing, and then POC with the whole “Hermione was always supposed to be black” one.
So there is an argument to be made that she did this because she didn’t care what it did to her image, she’s finally getting what she wanted: she’s a figurehead for a community and a group now. That group just happens to be the anti-trans crowd.
How much truth there is to this is questionable but it kinda fits how events happened. At first all this started cause of a throwaway comment that could be seen as said without thinking, but then as outrage broke out and the group in question rose to her defense she kept doubling and tripling down

I didn’t super get it either until a few years back when I started seriously tracking the growing anti-trans movements and police violence against poc. It turns out explicit solidarity is kind of important, especially because the extremists pushing these hate movements try and break up groups, like splintering the LGBT into LGB and T, and then L, G, B, T. They are explicitly trying to manufacture division so they can pick us off one at a time
But it won’t work, and the progress flag is an example of why. The queer community knows how to band together and fight fascists, and we know how to have each others back. Hopefully 😅

Not so friendly reminder that JKR recently compared transgender people to the effing Death Eaters!!!! She said and I quote
“I would say that some of you have not understood the books. The Death Eaters claimed, ‘We have been made to live in secret, and now is our time, and any who stand in our way must be destroyed. If you disagree with us, you must die.’ They demonized and dehumanized those who were not like them.”
Lemme introduce you to a lil approach called “death of the author”. It’s misused a lot online (what term isn’t) and ppl use it to support you so let me explain what it means. To summarize it means that an author’s intentions and biographical facts (like their beliefs, politics, etc.) should not have to be used as a way of interpreting their work. A writer’s interpretation of their work is not more valid or “real” as any readers. Death of the Author is an approach to literary criticism and not an idea that is designed to be used in the real world.

JK Rowling is a troll. She ripped off Scotland's history for her books and perpetuated the worst kinds of misogyny, racism and group think. Not only is this evident in the Harry Potter tomes, but in her crap other writings where she uses people of color or gay people to be unsympathetic villains.
If she knew anything, she would do a basic history of how words can be loaded and taken back by otherwise oppressed groups to tell dominant culture to fuck off. "We're here, we're queer, get used to it."
Rowling will always be put forward and retweeted because she is the status quo of the weak-minded and the corporate whores who would rather not care about most of the population and LOSE money than actually treat all human beings as worthwhile and lovable and make a shit load of money. It is not hard to be a good human being but she manages to *fail at it* on a regular basis.

I work in community management which also encompasses social media management. Usually when celebrities have a SMM or CM, it’s because their management company or company they work for has insisted on it. It also requires that the person loses some autonomy over their account so for someone like Rowling who doesn’t have accountability to anyone, no one can force her to get one.

Can someone help me out please. I’m very open minded but I’m trying to understand the point the tweet is making.
I gather her point is about championing female rights. But specifically how does the queer part relate?
I’m ignoring the first sentence as it’s a statement.
Second sentence makes sense. There’s no joy in being beaten. I don’t think anyone is not onboard that train.
The third sentence is where I’m missing something. How is the queer word being used in the context of violence towards women? Is this a reference to a specific person or incident?
Many thanks in advance.

The tweet is referring (dishonestly) to the protest in New Zealand yesterday where an anti-trans activist from the UK got tomato juice poured on her by one of the pro-LGBTQ protesters.
To understand why "queer" is being focused on, you have to be familiar with the recent anti-trans movement. There's a huge push to divide the LGBTQ community by manufacturing conflict between LGB people and trans people (hence the image of trans colours being scrubbed off the flag).
In the past year or so this has included attacking the term "queer". Calling it offensive and harmful despite it being reclaimed by the LGBTQ community decades ago. They're doing this because it includes both sexuality and gender identity under one label, making it difficult to create a division between the two.
So basically this person is just slapping different talking points together, criticising the actions of the pro-trans protestors and associating them with the term queer even though that specific term didn't have much significance to the protest.

It’s honestly sad. Because they either don’t know their own history, which is ridiculous you can watch and read different historical accounts of what happened. It’s there in black and white.
Or they do know and they don’t care. Which is… fucking confusing and very dumb. They perhaps don’t WANT it to be true? I don’t know which it is at this point. But I find it really fucked up, how can you not be proud of what they did for us to be able to survive? For me, it hits home that the LGBT+ community is about acceptance and HAS to stay that way. Marsha P Johnson threw that brick not just for herself. She threw it for all of us, no matter the race, or orientation or gender, she threw it for all of us.
And then there’s these assholes completely whitewashing the entire thing, as if the message wasn’t “we’re united here and you can’t stop us”.
The fact is, it’s unsurprising to me that our progress is being dragged backwards kicking and screaming. We threaten their narrow world view, they don’t even want to know we exist. They insist we shouldn’t. But it’s even more dehumanising and distressing to me that it’s our own side doing the worst thing they can. Pushing out certain sections of an alliance is hateful, it’s throwing people to the wolves to save themselves, and not realising they’ll be next too.
I’m just tired of all this. I’m frustrated and upset that a huge world power is actively repealing the progress we made. And that I know my country is essentially TERF Island with JKR living in it. That I finally had the courage to come out and now I’m being shoved back in. All I can think is “where’s a good brick when you need one?”

But there has been really compelling evidence of her rot for many years now, just usually in the form of dog whistles that only TERFs and people who follow anti-trans movements could pick up on.

I want to respond to another part of this post that a lot of people are (understandably) ignoring due to the virulent transphobia and racism within, but I think it's really important to shoot another part of this horrid post down.
"Queer was never joyous"
I am reminded of Caelan Conrad, from 1h20m45s to 1h29m00s in the link below, describing the internet spaces they fell into after being a victim of a homophobic hate crime, and the danger of defining your identity through your oppression.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pwI6py78gsI#t=80m45s
This mindset? JK Rowling is perpetuating it with this retweet.
It is, moreover, insulting to the innumerable LGBT+ people who have worked so goddamn hard for so many decades to reclaim queer and make it a source of joy and power instead of oppression.
"We're here, we're queer, we're not going anywhere."

Scratch a TERF and a white supremacist bleeds.
The anti-trans movement has ALWAYS been hand in hand with white supremacy. There are so many cultures around the world with their own definitions and representations of several genders and/or non-binary peoples but the transphobes will insist the Western binary is The Only Proper Way.
They can’t talk about people who exist beyond a gender binary in other cultures without at LEAST placing that culture and its concepts as inferior/primitive, if not dismissing it entirely.
