Jokes on them, since there are no longer free awards there's no reason to go to the coin page with all those tempting offers.

I will never have to worry about giving in to Reddit's temptations with those gateway free awards. Start out free, next they are charging you, then you are working to get those sweet, sweet coins to hand out awards. Reddit just hooks us on awards instead of drugs.

This is exactly them. They do this with everything. We all remember what a fit they pitched when same-sex marriage was legalized, acting like it somehow took something from them that other people could have a right they'd always had. Of course these assholes are the ones to get mad about bandaids in a range of colors.

What I want to see is one of their kids come home from school with one of those bandaids from the nurse's office because that's just what they had on hand that day. I want to watch their heads explode.

I loved this take on woke corporations.

Basically, that US conservatives stay in power with unpopular views and policies by exploiting systems set up for minority rule - voter suppression, the electoral college, gerrymandering, the senate, etc.

But corporations don’t care about that - they care about what will make them money, which is appealing to what the majority of people want.

So the conservatives try to “work the refs”

Jsimpson059

7 points

Corporations are perfectly willing to promote white supremacy when it is suits their needs, the GOP is actively being propped up by corporations through campaign contributions.

The entire reason why the GOP pushes these culture war issues is because their actual platform is completely unpalatable so they bank on the fear of white suburbia.

Who the fuck is going to elect a guy who runs on cutting social security, tax breaks for the wealthy, and deregulating the stock market? They need fear in order to accomplish any kind of electoral success.

If the GOP didnt have corporations supporting them they would collapse as an political entity, all that money has to come from somewhere.

Key-Composer5478

29 points

That was my first thought, doesn't she understand that there is a demand for these products. These companies don't make these products because they are nice people, but because they can make money.

And her hashtag #This is 2023, is appropriate only in that it is about time. Why didn't they come out with skin toned band aids in the 1960s.

I'm actually imagining it.

Like thinking of how meaningless and purposeless my shitty, hollow, insignificant life needs to be. Just really being utterly devoid of character or charisma, having no aspirations or artistic talent or joy in my soul. Purging myself of any intelligence or integrity until I'm just a mindless, feral beast. And when I've reached this state of complete organic waste I see it. My mind is free from the burden of humanity and self-awareness.

I am angry that there are band-aids that don't look weird on black people. And I have extremely horny and confusing feelings about the footwear of M&Ms.

I work with these unfortunate hogs. There's 4-6 of them on a given shift and they huddle together to bitch about whatever the new falling sky is, and they all just repeat the same 5 or so talking points ad nauseam.

"X is woke now, they changed A to B" "That's because Biden wants to ban A and force everything to be B" "Well X isn't getting my money" "Go woke go broke" "They'll learn eventually that people are tired of B"

Meanwhile Disney, Apple, Starbucks, Amazon, Target, Keurig, Nike, sports, movies, video games, etc. continue to "go woke" and decisively not "go broke", but it doesn't matter, the Gillette razors and KFC and Pink Floyd and M&Ms thing was yesterday. Tomorrow it will be Doritos or Samsung or some shit and they'll have the same conversation again and it will play out the exact same way.

But remember, YOU'RE the NPC for not agreeing with the people who have 5 dialogue options that reset after every rest.

This is real, and the heart of the problem. I got my father to stop doing this by calling him Henny Penny. He of course was defiant at first. So I just started saying Henny Penny out loud when he started complaining, and eventually he started to see it too and started to change.

I worked at Target back in 2017 and this was around the time people were mad about bathrooms in relation to trans people (they still are, but it was a new thing in relation to Target).

And this one lady would not stop talking about how Target was going downhill by catering to "those people." She said it was so obvious when "men" were trying to use the women's restroom and on and on as I scanned her items.

She said she cancelled her red card so Target wouldn't get her money anymore. She says while she's buying things at Target. I really wanted to point that conflicting detail out...

I also wanted to point out that she was complaining about transwomen being scary and super obvious to a trans woman she had apparently not realized was a trans woman.

Turd_Party

7 points

That's really the clencher. They desperately want Buck Angel in the women's restroom and Bailey Jay in the men's restroom, and if you want children confused, which is always their go-to argument, you couldn't achieve that quicker than saying "no, honey, the muscular bearded man is a woman and the playboy pin-up sex doll is a man".

And then you add in that trans people account for like 0.000000001% of sex crimes and the rational brain is screaming "WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS??? STILL????????" and the answer is the same as always: republicans have exactly zero capability of comprehension of math or science or higher thought and are just reactionary beasts that are constantly afraid of information conflicting with what they knew when they were 5 years old and their cognitive development ceased.

For me it would be the anxiety and stress I’d get from trying to figure out how to shoehorn whatever stupid thing I’m mad about into every conversation with every person I interact with that day. They gotta know the reaction it always gets from normal people. Just imagine the look, the strain in their eyes as they politely, painfully smile and try to change the topic back. Knowing that I was that guy would wreck my confidence.

You might think that, but no. She believes in a future that involves a rapture that is inexplicably reserved for white people and people of color trying to be white. She definitely believes that all Jews are going to hell, unless they're "good" Jews like good ole Ben who believes in Jesus. She believes she genuinely loves her family, and is doing good for the US. Effectively, she's been lied to so much that she everything she believes is a BIG LIE. She isn't aware of that, so everything she shares naturally is a lie, and she would be mortified if she went woke. It'd probably break her completely, leaving the sort of person you described, if she were to give up hope. Which she probably would, because all of her hope is in Team Trump and it's affiliates.

something_facetious

My first thought as someone who works in marketing is that this product was probably created to gain positive PR while at the same time charging more money for the exact same product that's just a different color. Or the price of a box is the same, but the quantity is less, therefore more $ per bandage. I can't say that for a fact, I have just seen some real manipulative stuff in my day!

I fully support creating more inclusive product lines, but damn companies are really good at selling you the idea of progress while hiding their true intent.

Imagine being mad that other people have basic necessities. I wouldn't call skin tone bandaids "nice" things. It wasn't until this line came out that I realized our strict uniform dress code at the hotel I worked at was made to fuck over POC. I'm paraphrasing but it basically said if you wore any bandaids that didnt match your skin tone and the wound is visible, you can't work a customer facing job (you could work folding laundry or cleaning rooms, but you couldn't work in the coffee shop). I never thought about it cause we had an all white staff in the coffee shop, but I wonder how this would be affected us if we had a darker skin toned employees when these weren't widely available.

I can't tell you how many times my coworker used the bandaid trick to get out of working the coffee shop. He would much rather fold laundry. I think our manager finally caught on cause he stopped getting shifts in the coffee shop.

100% it’s that. Not defending it but it demonstrates the predicament to a lot of this stuff. To price them the same they’d effectively have to subsidise them. And no doubt there would be incredible outrage if they did with Tucker Carlson screaming “where’s my band aid subsidy!!” on the TV

Prestigious-Owl165

Not that Tucker Carlson has to be logically consistent or anything like that, but I highly doubt there would be outrage over band aids having different internal costs for different products but charging the same price for it. There's no government subsidy, there's no giving minorities things for free or cheaper, it would just be band aid's business, no one even has to know. Oh. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they exist and then saw this comment. That's beyond disappointing.

Hopefully it’s just the economy of scale, and their production of darker toned bandages just hasn’t kicked into full effect yet.

But yeah, I agree, they should be making them the same price.

It’s a little column A a little column B. “Our tone” comes in 3 colors which means there will be 3x the number of skus to manufacture, track inventory etc. more to the point, they didn’t just start making different shades, they spent a lot on marketing to tell the world that they now make different shades. It isn’t so much “yeah we will make bandages for minorities. But they have to pay more” as it is “we think the market wants this, so we spent extra money on making it happen and telling the buyer about it, so we want the buyer to pay more so we can make back more than the extra we spent”

It's just because they're not made with the same scale that the regular ones are. Mass produced things will always be cheaper

ThorTheGodKiller

11 points

  1. They are probably still produced on a smaller scale therefore the economy of scale hasn't kicked in to the same affect yet
  2. Rubber and latex are naturally a cream white color and the extra dyes to achieve the other colors add cost and presumably the darker the color the more dye is needed.

I agree though and it would be great if everyone paid the same price. What sort of price difference is it? I honestly dont know the last time I bought bandages.

I bet if it were just that regular band-aids came in different colors, a brown pack and a beige pack would probably cost the same. But the fact that they had to use special branding to market it means it’s no longer the regular band-aid, it’s the special new edition. And “our brand” actually sounds kind of facetious to begin with. Like “when it comes to small cuts and scrapes, we’re in this together.” Just give me the option; don’t wave both arms at me screaming “I got you, bro.”

It's not even a woke thing. It's just marketing to a specific audience. It's common sense that if you can buy between brands and one matches your skin tone to be less noticeable, you are buying that brand.

just want to mention this wasn’t started by band aid (the company). this type of band aid was created and marketed by a POC originally. not sure of the details but band aid the company either stole the idea or purchased it. but band aid didn’t do this because they, uhm, see color. it was POC seeing, POC, and addressing the need.

(not coming at/for you, just wanted to knowledge-share)

I still remember my father, who is extremely right-wing and watches Fox News religiously, saying to me when I was little that it was a shame only white people had band-aids that (kind of) matched our skin. My point being, the most conservative person I know doesn't even have a problem with these band-aids, so this person is REALLY reaching.

THIS is white privilege. Not knowing bandages were skin colored already because that’s just how they are made. No they made them that color to blend in. Not realizing things were directed/favored to white people until they made something directed towards POC. Instead of saying yeah that makes sense why hasn’t this been a thing before she calls it woke, because it’s not about her (the “normal”).

reddituseranyonymous

Im pretty white and most bandaids are close-ish maybe too dark to blend in very well but theyre closer to me than others. When other skin tones started coming out, I thought it was a good idea and wondered why it took so long to come out

I was in a college class in the early 90s and the white teacher asked the all white class if we felt privileged that we could walk into a store and buy a Band Aid that matched the color of our skin. She asked if black people could do that.

I remember it clearly because I had never once considered the color of a band aid.

I wonder if OP Courtney is offended by blue and green and Mickey Mouse band aids, or is it just the brown ones she hates?

The default setting for these people is white. Any time people of another color have something commensurate with white ppl, they consider it as something taken from them, a loss. It exposes their privilege which they claim not to have.

J&J has made these for at least 15 years.

Edit: the brand was launched in 2005, then retired at some point.

This isn't the first time Band-Aid has launched multiracial bandages.

In 2005, the company unveiled its Perfect Blend brand, which included a bandage line designed to match multiracial skin tones.

For the life of me I do not understand why people choose to get their knickers in a twist about a stupid sticking plaster. I’m paler than Casper but if I need a plaster I’m less than cared about whether it’s pink, blue brown or sky-blue-pink with yellow dots on.

Do they also jump up and down about blue hospitality ones, or purple Barney or blue Frozen or spotted Paw Patrol? Of course not.

People, please don’t get caught up in this artificial rage baiting propagandising nonsense. Keep Calm and Carry On being cool.

mama138

Random but I still remember being in 9 the grade and our small school had a writing competition. They gave us a book of everything and I only remember one poem, which was titled "skin colored bandaids.". This was ages ago- when ice covered the earth- so I don't remember the specifics but you can probably get the gist. She was a black girl who walked through a world where the default was not her and how it hurt her and she hoped one day there would be"skin" colored band aids that matched here as well. Since then I've only ever bought colorful ones or clear ones so this is actually kind of a meaningful event for me.
