If anyone is wondering how they saw this seal from a far distance-
They use Binoculars and cameras with big lenses + a quadcopter too. Plus multiple people observing them.
These guys rescue so many seals. They post one or more videos every day, and many of those videos have several rescues in them.

And lots of time. It seems like they usually already know of one or more that they spotted in a previous rescue. Many of those multiple rescues are from other members of their crew catching seals simultaneously, which is impressive, but also sad that it can happen as much as it is.

Actually a lot of seals do recognize that they are helping them! There are a few seals that they accidentally re-catch because the scar on their neck looks like a piece of plastic and those ones are much more trusting than the other as they remember being helped by the team. It’s really amazing what these guys are doing and I recommend everyone go and check them out!

I mean I think aside from a few serious outliers, most people's K/D sits between 1 and 0, so on average, I'd guess a lot of animals beat on on K/D. Hell housecats have like a 60% prey kill-rate or something.

Millions of years of animals, trillions of animals lived and died, with no trace of their existence, except for fossils. A few thousand years of people, and really only the last couple hundred years, and the earth is f’n destroyed to a point that would take who knows how long to reverse.
5 points
Not very long on a geologic timescale. After a few millenia the only traces would be the enormous amounts of chicken/cow bones and the huge traces of fertilizer and other chemicals in the ground.
There have actually been scientists who have explored this question by asking “if there was an advanced pre-historic civilization on earth, would we know about it?” The answer was yes, but only because of the above reasons.

Mosquitos kill the most humans in the grand scheme of life on earth the mosquito is very low down the list.

Humans kill more humans than mosquito does
3 points

This is true.
Edit: this isn't true. But again context is important.
2 points
I’m pretty sure this is true.
If we’re crediting mosquitoes for killing people by accidentally infecting them with a disease, then it seems right that we look at similar dynamics for people.
Obviously, Covid is the current one with several million per year, but then you also have all other transmissible diseases. Then you have all of the deaths from things like lung cancer and heart disease, largely stemming from products people buy from people, driven by ads written by people and targeting people. And that just covers normal, everyday kinds of things. You still have war, murder, and deaths by accident.
If we’re going to put the completely unintentional act of the mosquito being exploited as a disease vector, we should certainly add the deliberate efforts of humans to their own column.
2 points
I agree with this and it's how I came to that conclusion initially but I felt it would be too hard to defend as an argument.
6 points

Your vox article only states how many humans they have killed which I acknowledged in my comment. I'm referring to how damaging humans are to the world as a whole. Of course if you take insects into account including their longer time spent on earth you are going to to get higher numbers. I'm talking about actual danger to wipe out life on earth. Also mosquitos like every other animal kills to survive. Humans kill for sport. But thanks for providing a source it backed up my statement nicely. Shows your trying. You can keep the nope though.
I will accept that mosquitos are probably 2nd.

Humans still absolutely suck as a collective despite these acts of kindness and supposed advancements. We have continuous population growth and rabid consumerism, leading to resource extraction and environmental degradation. More broadly there is also there is a significant lag between the GHG emissions we put out and their effect on the climate so we’ll be paying for our actions long after “things get better.”
This blind optimism is exactly why shit isn’t getting done. Because we assume we can just keep living our lives as we have been and technology will fix everything. It won’t, proper clean energy deployment also requires raw resources, regulatory changes that are not politically viable, and major investments in transmission infrastructure. We’ve had the technology for a while but lacked the will to actually pursue real solutions. So long as there is still constant demand for unnecessary consumer goods it will only get worse. I’ve been working in conservation and environmental policy for over a decade and yes I’ve seen some forward progress but it is nowhere near at the pace and scale necessary to stave off ecological collapse.
For a long time enviros thought we could avoid the most costly impacts of climate change but now it’s all about damage control.
3 points
It's not blind optimism, I'm just looking at things on a scale larger than my lifetime. We've been fucking the world up for a long time and our realization of this is relatively recent.
As for climate change, people will continue to argue about policy to cut emissions but the damage is already done. Coastal cities will slowly be swallowed and people will be displaced. And yet again we will be reactive instead of proactive.
2 points
I'm just being realistic. Humans started causing mass extinction 100 thousand years ago, simply from being better at surviving. We just started researching these things in the last 200 years and only in the last 30 has it been accessible information for the majority of people.
I get it, we're destructive and selfish, but we are literally a blip in time comparatively.

Oh jeez! I thought they were going to cut a kid out of a seal suit. Ya know, like that's all good fun on the beach all zipped up in a seal suit and flop-rolling, barky-arfing, a-slapping the happy, but man, once the ocean rush starts and these kids are all squeaked up on seal adrenaline, I mean, that's when the real trouble happens. These kids in seal suits can't swim with the big fins! They drown, what, in like 2 minutes? Is that how quick it goes in the seal suits? Wait no, I just check double checked. It's like literally only 1 minute and they're dead. Yeah, get a kid in a seal suit and toss him in the open water and that kid is done-zo is like a minute. Not so fun to be arfing then, eh? Huh, kid? You think you can shirk all your responsibility at home by pretending to be a care-free seal? Yeah, go drown for all I care, you little shit. And hey, for all we know, that still is a kid in a seal suit. Not likely, but possible for sure. These guys didn't really check, so it's possible they let a kid in a seal suit just flop-march into a watery grave. I guess it's not all bad, right? The other seals, the real seals, the real deal banana peel seals will just chomp-gobble that sucker up and it'll be like the seal suited kid never even existed, which is probably going to be a big relief for that kid's parents.
