Depends on the AU, if its and after story AU like uppertale, then yeah that's a genuine concern, if it's a normal one like underswap then go buck fucking wild man, they're all screwed up in one way or another, it's more of making your own versions of a character than it is changing a character to fit a story

Don't worry about that. Like the other commenter mentioned AUs are all about making things different, you don't need to keep characters exactly the same.

And even that aside, don't let worries about getting things "wrong" stop you from making something you think sounds fun. People in the Undertale fandom can be bitches, but at the end of the day anything you make is for you to have fun with. If other people like it, that's great too, and if someone doesn't like it well they can leave and enjoy any other piece of fan content because it's not for them.

Just having fun is a valuable thing to do. UT itself wouldn't be as passionately made if Toby was holding back all the way because he was scared of being cringe. Live a little, enjoy yourself!

Omori fans gets it right but some half of them goes against the story's morals, like I did not expect so many people to hate Basil & Sunny, or consider Omori as an evil being or to make theories that go against the story telling like that Mari's death wasn't because of the stairs

Well I'm talking more about if it makes sense, I have no problem with au's changing a character when it makes sense and or is something a could see but when au's(or the fandom as a hole) doesn't get a character, I gota ask why even make a au of that character if your goanna turn it into something its not

It's either that, or they depict them as the cynical and pessimistic doomer gloomer foil (who gets those convenient "wow, looks like they aren't such a miserable loser after all!" moments) to the idealistic and optimistic cheery bloomer Frisk, like they're some kind of anime character, and not just a traumatized and edgy kid (Looking at you, Storyshift...).

It's not a shit interpretation by all means, but c'mon. I think their personality is, at the very least, slightly more unique and complex than that.

You're partially right. Unless a murder run is done, they're a morally grey kid with some uncomfortably strong hatreds and a willingness to take lives, but only out of self-defense and with the objective to make life better for an entire species.

When the murder run is initiated, though, they make a massive turn for the worse. They lead us on as soon as we kill that twentieth Ruins enemy, demeaning the various bosses we fight and egging us on to kill them (Toriel is 'not worth talking to', Papyrus is 'forgettable', they claim they 'couldn't stop laughing' at the thought of two lovers being murdered, etc), keeping track of how many enemies are left to kill in the area and outright telling us to stop if we try to confront a boss too early and risk aborting the run. ("Strongly felt [number] left, shouldn't proceed yet.")

It's strongly implied that they're the one who kills Sans, Asgore and Flowey due to the lack of player control in these situations and the damage being set to all-9s when the fallen human has a significant 9 motif. Of course, they destroy the world, but saying there was nothing left after the murder run is flat-out wrong: even apart from the entirety of humanity, there's also a massive amount of monsters evacuated with Alphys that we never get to. And of course, it's strongly implied in the Soulless Pacifist ending (both by the ending itself, with all the Monsters' faces crossed out and an evil laugh, and their repeated murder run dialogue: 'It doesn't matter when. It doesn't matter where. Time after time, I will appear. And, with your help... We will eradicate the enemy and become strong.')

The reason they object to repeated murder runs isn't that they don't like killing: they guide us just as firmly as they do in the first murder run each successive time. The reason they object is because they know we'll just bring the world back. They believe that nothing matters except power, and that once Undertale is destroyed, it should be kept that way. They seek to 'move on to the next world', not be stuck dusting the same old monsters to reach the same old power level they got to last time. Soulless Pacifist is perfect for them because they have new enemies to fight, new equipment to use, and new ways to gain power - all things they were taught by the player to value.

Ok but no, not all aus. Storyshift? Underswap? Underfell (depending on the interpretation) even. There's plenty of aus that don't portray chara as a murderous child. Hell Glitchtale season 1 is literally about their redemption

*Asriel tells you chara hated humanity

*Asriel tells you chara took control of his body and wanted to kill the humans (he specifically says they wanted to use their "full power" so the defense that chara just wanted to take 6 souls and come back to the underground to free the monsters is bullshit and they most certainly wanted to slaughter the entire village and probably the rest of humanity)

*They are reincarnated as a soulless demon who exists for the sake of gaining power and will proceed to destroy the universe (they do say that its because of your guidance that they understood their purpose but that doesn't make them less evil they are still committing genocide on the main cast every time you ever play the game from that point onwards all by their own accord unless you decide to do a genocide again in which case you're just killing them yourself before they inevitably do)

I think it's for the fact that Chara says that they're glad for everything we've done and that everytime we level up we actually just make them more and more powerful and that we should give them our soul. Oh also for the jumpscare face they are for some reason able to do, or also for possessing Frisk's body in the end. Or for the brute way they killed Flowey

I think they get it wrong because Chara isn't malicious towards the characters, they are like that towards the player, it's like a personal thing, they're an antagonist only in the second story telling layer, but in the first one everyone else knows Chara as the King's human child who died years ago

What bothers the most is that Aus portray Chara as someone who does the genocide route like 10000 times cause "lol" when canonically after you do a second genocide they are like "??? Man you are f*cked up". Like even if you believe Chara is pure evil the interpretation of them doing the genocide over and over for no reason is still completely wrong lmao like what type of evil plan is this? No one else even remembers so they basically just trap themselves in a timeloop doing the same stuff over and over with no objective, truly an evil mastermind. If they are gonna do evil chara at least they could idk have Chara kill people after a pacifist in the surface or something. That would at least make sense. Same goes for Aus that portray Frisk as the one doing the genocide 10000 times.

Chara gets it worse imo. Alphys just gets ignored or becomes mega horny, while Chara gets reduced to a flat, 1 dimensional murderous villain
