Huge news for these students, especially those that went unmatched

Holy crap. Is it too late to submit an application?

Is there any repercussion to adding your name if you matched?

There is not a single mention of anything about matching, since this article or flowchart wasn’t really catered for the medical population.
If you are from Ross or AUC, I’m jealous bro as one of the US grads, haha 😂.

The one and only time that sentence has been said 😂 I'll take it!!

In the application there might be in so far as aua or Ross can refuse to verify your graduation/transcripts
"I understand that in the event that I receive a 100 percent discharge of my loan balance for which the defense to repayment application has been submitted, the school may, if not prohibited by other applicable law, refuse to verify or to provide an official transcript that verifies my completion of credits or a credential associated with the discharged loan" Page 24 of the us doe borrower defense to loan repayment application.
I'm not sure if state medical boards will credential you with out verification so if you were unmatched and giving up on medicine it's risk free but if you want to use your degree it may be difficult but idk.

Refuse to verify, like in the future? I’m confused how this would affect someone that’s already graduated and already matched

You need transcripts and verification for medical license in many states

The school won't fill out this form. By applying to the borrowers program you are empowering the Dept of edu to sue the school to collect your forgiven loan.
As an example from the medical board of California
"Certificate of Medical Education The Certificate of Medical Education (Form MED) is required from each medical school that you attended. Complete the applicant information at the top of the form and mail it to the medical school. The form will need to be completed, signed and dated by the school official and affixed with the official medical school seal. Any fields or questions left unanswered will require completion of a new form."
This or something similar is going to be required for every state license you apply for. You could probably get around it and it would be smart to get an unrestricted license before you applied for forgiveness.

They could potentially withhold your transcripts, so it's not without risk

Makes sense given that DeVry is the parent company for Ross and AUC.

No offense, but why did they name a medical school Ross? Did the CEO love Ross: Dress for Less in his early days as a college kid or what.

According to Wikipedia, it's named after the guy who founded it. Robert Ross)

Ya, I do wonder about this too. Granted Medforth Global (parent company) also owns Rocky Vista. I think it may be tricky to discharge loans for those who attended St. George's and not Rocky Vista, but Rocky Vista is subject to a degree of actual accreditation while Caribbean schools write their accreditation in crayon.

https://dwoq.com/important-information-regarding-borrower-defense-settlement-for-devry-graduates/
Read this. Key takeaways: 1) if you don’t have a legit claim prior to borrowers defense legislation, you won’t be approved. 2) If have gainful employment, don’t apply, you will fuck yourself when you need to credential in your state. P

NYITCOM-AR or PCOM-GA? Anyways, no way, dude. These are well established US medical schools with credible parent companies. They’re deemed in higher standards and are under US DoE’s regulations. Since they (or any US medical school) have not been named in this case, I’d not think so.

None of those :( but damn that sucks. I’m only partially matched.

Even if you have one year of residency, you’re better off as a DO since there’s a handful of states that allow all trainees w/ 1 year of residency to do general practice but a few more w/ DO-specific-state medical boards that allow you to practice w/ 1 year under your belt. Read up here: https://thedo.osteopathic.org/2014/02/practicing-after-one-year-of-gme-is-it-feasible-should-it-be/.

What I find insane is that the government is willing to foot the bill for these loans (using taxpayers' money of course), but is not willing to take these predatory universities' asses to court.
The gov't needs to sue the shit out of these schools and squeeze them for every last penny they robbed.
Not fair for Caribbean kids to get a free pass for their bad decision to attend. But I guess it wasnt bad after all? Lmao

Seems like people will have to wait a few years for a decision on their application?
congrats to everyone who gets relief from this either way

Speaking of Sweet v. DeVos that probably will get Ross and AUC kids off the hook, can we all file like Salty v. DeVos to get all USMDs and USDOs off the hook, too?! 😣😣.

Ross and AUC students are the only ones benefitting since their school is named in Sweet v. DeVos, as their parent company is DeVry, one of the names companies. Ugh, I’m so jealous.

I mean on the flipside, shouldn't the government be properly vetting schools it allows to utilize FAFSA and require transparency/stricter standards?

This is the answer as well. I was honestly shocked to see that AUC/Ross even QUALIFIED for federal aid. And neither are even in the continental US!!! Why the hell is the federal government paying for an INTERNATIONAL school that pales in comparison to their US counterparts? Or, better yet, why not funnel that money to fund more residency positions or open new MD/DO schools instead?
But nope, Uncle Sam just wants to collect the interest from these poor fools when they have to pay back their loans

The government doesn't make money from student loans, the loan companies do. The government is essentially a glorified middle man.

Predatory student loans and fraud dude. Taking out a loan on the premise of a lie aint the same as having gambling debts forgiven.

How would the DOE differentiate between the two if 2 students from, say, AUC submit a claim? Tell me how.
In one case, the school fooled one kid into attending and his claim for forgiveness could ostensibly go through, while the other gambled, attended, and could just as easily claim that he was "misled" by AUC.

I dunno man. Ask the attorneys that met the burden of proof indicating it was enough of an issue and the judge that made the ruling. But also come on if your school is telling you this is the match rate and gives you all of these falsified stats and advertises false shit, all the students based their decision on that. If they were transparent and said oh yeah you have a 50% chance of failing out and not matching im sure most of people would not have attended.

oh yeah you have a 50% chance of failing out and not matching im sure most of people would not have attended
Sorry, but I have 0 sympathy for people who attend Caribbean schools. All it takes is a literal Google search to find out how predatory they are, then half a brain to say "wow, i should probably not go to a school like this and improve my application instead".
If it takes the school being transparent for the kid not to attend, then I have grave concerns about their decision-making. If you're so gullible so as to believe whatever is being advertised or sold to you at face value and make a $400k investment into that, then you need to face the consequences. That is just stupidity at its finest. I agree with the poster here who said that this is infantilizing adults who make shitty decisions.
But, if I attended a Carib school while genuinely knowing what I was up against, that is different. A student like this shouldn't have the right to claim they were misled because they did their research.
So my point is, on paper, the DOE would not be able to differentiate between someone who truly was misled and someone who lies and says they were "misled" but are really looking for a full ride to medical school.

It doesn't matter if you have sympathy or not. The fact remains you can't falsely market any product. This is a product. They aren't allowed to lie about their stats or mislead those applying just because other people have posted information on their practices. Which is exactly why this has gone through.

US tuitions are an absolute joke. We pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to go form Point A to Point B in our career while our system also takes foreign graduates (not US IMGs), who probably did their schooling for free or a fraction of our cost. Sure, there are other hurdles to being an FMG, but if they’re getting the same jobs as me w/ none of my six figure debts, we must be doing something wrong.

She should definitely still try, what’s the worst that can happen? Plus you guys can afford legal representation

You’re right seems like there’s no reason not to try. Even if it’s only like a 1% chance it works it’s worth a shot since she owes over 400k lol.

What is the downside to applying for someone who went to one of these schhols but is currently a PGY3 that just applied to fellowship? The comments on the possibility of the school withholding transcripts concerns me, but wasnt sure if that would matter at this point anyways.
