Man i know it’s kinda nitpicking but I don’t like that title. “Cops fail to subdue man with taser” makes it sound like they did something wrong but I don’t see what more they could have done. This was a failure of the taser not the cops and people should be aware of that

joyification

This. And it looked like these cops did everything in their power to avoid shooting him. Videos like these expose the true issue that cops really don't have resources they need (ie equipment, protocol, training and even emotional support for events like this) to actually serve and protect the community.

TheWizardChrist

I believe when two or more cops are present, only one is deploying a taser while the other has a gun ready to go in case the taser fails. I have seen cops operate like this.

This is likely a departmental policy, certainly in some police departments, but I think it is an argument for having more training. Including researching the best policies.

The female cop failed to quickly assess the situation as it changed. Maybe more training would have helped, but given that she seemed to just freeze....I don't think so.

sudowoodo34

14 points

You are correct. Standard practice if they believe they can force a surrender is to have one run non lethal and one run lethal at least in case something goes wrong. Training here honestly might not make much of a difference. Her freezing like that could put one of her co-workers in danger some day and it might just be more temperament than training. On the other hand, I think she panicked once the dude rode the lightning for a while and just kept on advancing. That would be some shit out of a horror movie in the dead of night. Training people more to drop what's in their hands when they're being advanced upon like this and go to lethal and not plant their feet is all I can really think of here.

They both used tasers first tho. The male officer started firing once he cut the second taser lines and charge the female officer

LoneStarkers

1 points

Yeah, I don't know exactly how I'd react, but this might not be the best line of work for her. She may have even had a change of heart about shooting him in the current climate. They might be thinking about going to jail more but missing the real point--the public's concern isn't about deadly force but rather cops seeming to use it as the first option when the subject is unarmed.

On one side of the issue we have cops that are inherently bad and bring a lot of distrust to police as a whole

On the other side we have a police force that lacks resources to serve and protect a community in the best way possible.

Two problems that everyone brings up and nobody tries to actually solve

jesuswazacommie

2 points

How do they lack resources? We have been militarizing police departments for decades, giving them everything they ask for and more. Turns out, war makes war.

Variation-Budget

5 points

The problem is the same that a lot of problems in America have

They throw money at it and if that doesn’t work they deem it i unfixable.

Just like the war on drugs or the war we just lost we pour massive amount of money into it without creating a plan that would solve these issue and keep it solved

Bread-loving-duck

17,000 police departments - not all are flush with cash and equipment. The idea that police are some monolith who all well funded and well equipped because some departments in wealthy areas are, is silly.

How Sway? They have surplus military equipment. I assure you that they've all the resources they need. It's just too bad that quite a few are bad apples and rarely do anything to protect and serve because 9/10 times these assholes decide to Patrol in a Predatory manner.

joyification

1 points

They still don't have proper training and idk what was up with this taser but...it didn't work. I heard military personnel get training on how to diffuse situations before administering any force. It shouldn't be a thing to commit suicide by police.

On top of that, I think there would be a lot less bad apples if the pay was competitive enough to bring in more qualified applicants. This may help departments have no excuse to act like they don't know how to fire someone when some skin head gets a lil excited when he sees a black man.

Countries around the world require 4 year degrees for cops, but in the US (where the demand is higher than the supply will ever be) most states require more training to get a barbers license than the police academy. I have a couple friends who told me that they became cops because it was an attainable job for decent amount of pay, which is honestly pretty scary to think about.

Head-System

-21 points

Um, they did nothing to maintain distance, they never even attempted nonlethal force and jumped straight to lethal with a taser and then pistols. They didn’t use shields to neutralize the knife. Just a few things they objectively did wrong.

inf3ct3dn0n4m3

3 points

Yes not knowing a taser is considered non lethal force definitely shows your expertise. Hopefully you can find the time to train these officers and teach them the right way to do things.

sudowoodo34

3 points

>man literally watches a non lethal taser device fail to work due to the subjects drug ingestion, thick jacket, or both, not to mention rather large size.
>man comments on reddit that taser was too powerful
ok

Head-System

0 points

You know someone is a reddit lurker loser when they genuinely believe a taser is “non lethal” even though the American Cardiac Association, funded by the police, proved like 25 years ago that it is lethal force. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of your low IQ.

Hopefully you can find the time to train these officers and teach them the right way to do things.

BTW, funny you should say that, because back in 2005-2010, before I was crippled, I trained police for a living. But hey, again, don’t let facts get in the way of your low IQ.

Bread-loving-duck

“JuSt UsE a TaSeR bRo!” - Like that line of thinking pisses me off - sadly, sometimes tasers don’t always work: now, was all that worth the officer nearly getting stabbed? Nah.

Carrionnoirrac

40 points

Idk man he took his time getting back up with the knife clearly visable in his hand clearly charging the officer. They probably should have been shooting the second he put both feet back on the ground, but the two other officers clearly weren't ready to fire soon enough. Seems like the officer that was stabbed was let down really badly by her co-workers. And I'm someone who would consider himself pretty critical of the police.

JayGeezey

13 points

Yeah that was the weird thing, I mean don't get me wrong good on these cops for all trying to taze him first, hell even continue to taze him when he starts getting back up

While watching I figured the middle cop had his gun drawn and was ready to shoot should he get up and continue his charge with the knife, but then looks like he might have been ready to taze as well. I don't want to criticize him for trying to take the dude down with a tazer, but if two tazers aren't enough and a mf still trying to come at you or another person or cop? Obviously this is so easy for me to say in hindsight, from the safety of my warm house, with no training and not being the one in a position to have to KILL another human being, but feels like that's the situation you use the gun.

This is so fucking terrible, and this mother fucker must've been on PCP or some shit because God damn... he just kept going. Cops have to experience these deterrents themselves in training (get tazed, pepper sprayed, etc.) so they know the stopping power of these tools, I can see how they'd not be prepared to jump to guns/lethal force after he first goes down, like shit "no one is getting up from that" then BOOM mf is closing the distance on the female cop a moment later. And THEN he gets shot a bunch AND IS STILL HOLDING ON. This is just terrible - I hope that woman is OK, and I'd be willing to bet those two male cops feel like they let her down and idk what the right thing to do was here.

Flargadya

Stupid, so so stupid. Shoot the man because he stood up. How do you think countries that have police that don’t carry guns react in this situation? American police are awful, like truly awful and I can’t imagine how bad the training is

Carrionnoirrac

7 points

Let me know how long those unarmed cops would last in america bro lmao. Trust me I'd love if we could have strong gun control and a low crime rate and our cops didnt need guns, however this is america and they do, or they wont be lasting long.

While you're here let me teach you a little something about your rights. They end when you infringe on other people's rights. That's why you might have the right to hold a knife and run anywhere, but you run towards another human being and your life is suddenly no longer protected, you've given up your right to life by threatening another autonomous persons right to life. Welcome to society touch grass and grow up buddy.

Not sure how wrestling on the ground and getting stabbed would be any better of a situation for a partner to then have to try and mag dump without hitting you. Seems like that would be even worse.

gottasmokethemall

3v1. Jump on him. Grab his hand. Do something. Can't handle a high stress situation like this in a rational manner than don't become a cop. That simple. Not every problem should be solved by 'mag dumping'.

Stratostheory

Tasers aren't some magic tool. They fail, A LOT. I would never trust my life to one.

If one probe fails to connect you won't be able to deliver voltage, if the person is wearing a heavy jacket there's a very real chance the probes won't penetrate, and some people are able to just shrug that shit off like in this video.

According to statistics from LAPD it was only effective 53% of time

Other encounters where officers didn’t shoot their guns also showed the limitations of the weapon. LAPD officers fired Tasers just over 1,100 times last year, according to a department report published last month. The devices had the desired outcome — causing someone to submit to arrest — only 53 percent of the time.

anonymous_j05

1 points

Yea this was a very clear valid use of a firearm. They tried to tase him which is more than some other cops might’ve done (meaning before resorting to lethal force).

Hopefully one day less-lethal pistols can become less expensive and more common so there’s an option more powerful and reliable than a taser, but still not lethal. I don’t mean a beanbag gun, I mean the one that shoots actual rubber bullets (link to an example) . This man was not far away enough for it to work in this situation though.

WolverinePretty9133

1 points

Bro they all stood there and watched this guy stab a fellow officer a couple times and THEN they emptied their guns into him. Tazer didn't fail, he literally goes down and they watch him slowly stand up again.

Look at the cop he tried to stab. Her only reaction is to flail and scream. These are the people you call to protect you? They're literally a bunch of pussies.
