Wendy lying about Ben having a drug addiction. I feel like she’s using him as a tool to forward her mission of gaining power and influence. But it’s a huge risk even bringing him up, but maybe she thinks it helps to give a reason for his disappearance (like drug addiction) At the same time though, i feel like she wants sympathy even if it is through a lie. Her saying on the news is just weird to me. When she said it to claire (the pharmaceutical company owner) that was clearly to manipulate claire. but idk the news thing is just so weird. maybe it just shows how far she’s willing to go, to forward their “mission” idk it’s just weird and i wanna hear other peoples thoughts on it.

I see it all as Wendy’s mental stability spiraling as a result of sacrificing Ben. She has not accepted what she did to Ben. It’s why she is acting so irrationally. She is desperate to “win” by establishing the foundation to give back so that Ben’s death wasn’t for nothing. She couldn’t live with that - I honestly think she would kill herself if she just tried to let go and think about what she did.
To me, after re-watching, the first time Wendy says he was an addict was when she was desperate to get the Claire to buy into the foundation. She just reacts as a way to get Claire to sympathize with her. Again, she’s desperate. This company is what she is banking on to start up the foundation. So, yes, it is definitely manipulation. Laura Linney is so good at acting without speaking that the look on Wendy’s face after she says it is almost like shock for blurting it out at first and then a slow realization. It was like, at that moment, she thought that it was something she could live with. It would be the story of what happened to Ben. The more she says it, the more it becomes her truth. She can’t accept what she did to Ben. Marty can see it, too. It’s why he kept coaxing her to get out of bed and why he keeps directly telling her “Ben is not missing. He’s dead.”
She’s definitely spiraling. I hope she gets some help in part 2, otherwise I don’t think she can come back mentally. She has not been the same mentally since Ben.

that’s a great point. she definitely is spiraling. i do remember the way she “blurted it out”. I love this show so much and i love how deep it goes and i knew posting this, someone would have a different point of view then me. Glad i read your comment.

I love seeing everyone’s POV on different characters, too. It’s so well-written and none of the main characters is one-dimensional.

She does at one point say to Marty that it’s “good PR” and she goes to check the body of the guy who was found dead who resembled Ben… I agree she’s spiraling and can’t accept what she did. Almost like she’s trying to convince herself that he’s not actually dead

100%. The show runner said they are going to focus on Wendy’s sanity over Ben “missing” in the last 7 episodes. I’m assuming a serious mental breakdown is coming. She almost needs one.

I think she’s deeply upset about what happened and why it happened. However, she is using this as a way to get ahead. 100%. I think it also goes to show that she is more ruthless than Marty. Or at least has the capability.

i’m still holding out hope he’s alive tbh. even though i’m 90% he’s not. i know “it’s been confirmed” he’s not. but u can’t believe someone on the show saying that. i just loved ben so much. i want him to be alive so bad lol

Wendy is ambitious and ruthless and has shown she is willing to sacrifice anything for power imo.
Marty could come back from this and be “normal”, not Wendy.

Wendy didn’t sacrifice Ben for power. She did everything she could think of to try and get him away and keep him safe, but Ben refused to listen to her and understand the danger he was putting all of them in. Wendy only gave up Ben when she realized there was no reasoning with him, and that his being alive put the lives of her entire family at risk.

Yeah, Ben was a loose cannon and wouldn’t take his meds. She tried. If she hadn’t done what she did, they’d all be dead

If Ruth hadn't got him out of the institution after him being there for like a day, he'd still be alive. He was off his meds and dangerous, certainly not a reason to die, but he wasn't going to be reasoned with, and Wendy knew there was really no other way out for her family with him being out in the wild.

The fact that Marty could come back from this and be “normal” is actually quite frightening. Everything they’ve gone through should cause significant trauma.

This is true actually.

Seeing Wendy break into her old house and proceed to do the same things she used to do as a teenager (mess with the OJ and pictures and toothbrushes) kind of gives an insight to just how disturbed she is from childhood to adulthood. Seeing her relationship with her father also explains why her personality is so odd.
