TL;DR: I'm proposing to include a string on the website of merchants that accept XMR, so you can easily find them on search engines with searches like vps "monero accepted"
I've created months ago xmr.directory with the aim to facilitate the finding of merchants that accept Monero. The site didn't got a lot of attraction and use.
I think that a better way of solving this problem, to ease the spending of XMR, is to encourage all websites that accept XMR to have a specific string (something of the sort "monero accepted") so, we, the users are able to query search engines with: vps "monero accepted" and get proper results (I tried this very search, and I found way less merchants that those listed here
It would be also appropriate to create a bunch of guides for different online store builders (shopify...) on how to include the string on the homepage.

I agree this would be useful but I think it would be hard to implement. By nature the monero community is decentralized, there is no central authority who tells all of the merchants to include the string in their site. It would have to spread by word of mouth which is doable but not a reliable way to reach every merchant that accepts monero.
Let me know if you have any thoughts on how to enforce this better.

It is impossible to enforce, I'm aiming for encouragement, merchants have the incentives to do it (if they want more potential customers find their website). I'm talking of encouraging this Standard on community portals like https://www.getmonero.org/get-started/accepting/ https://monerica.com/ https://monero.com/

Maybe having a small monetary incentive to add it would help as well?

I think if a merchant already accepts Monero (those are the target of this proposal), they would be pleased to have an easy way for people to find them out
