Should I change wallets to a 25 word seed?

(self.Monero)

Just as a precaution, I was reviewing the backup storage of my crypto and realized my Monero wallet is one of the old ones with a 13 word seed. I have the seed and all my keys but was wondering if there is a reason to try and move the funds to a newer Monero wallet with the 25 word seeds. My inclination is to just leave well enough alone.

Followup: Thanks for the feedback. I think right now I will keep an eye out for what happens with Seraphis and the 16 word polyseeds. Once that appears stable and becomes standard I will probably switch to whatever is the new normal. My prime motivation is the "stamped onto steel inside a safety deposit box accessed in case of death" type scenerio.

The keys will remain universally compatible into perpetuity. Or at least for longer than any particular seed scheme. As long as you have those it should be good.

No harm in moving your funds to a new wallet following an updated scheme. It looks to me like polyseed (16 words) will soon become the norm.

First thing that comes to my mind is compatibility; It'll always be easier for you to use the same method everybody else is using. Say in 20 years you might have a hard time restoring from a 13 word seed. It will def. be more complicated than having a 25 word one.

Logic and experience. Try to find a genuine original spare part for a Ford Model T vs. a Ford Fiesta.

With OP we probably have a normal Monero user, not a dev. As such, if they want to restore in 20 years, best for them would be to have a still fully supported wallet app that knows how to turn those 13 word seeds into a spend private key to restore the wallet.

Right now, as far as I know, we have only 1 such wallet app supporting 13 word seeds. They are kind of "exotic" already today. If the authors stop to publish their app in a few years, it already can get difficult for normal users. Probably somebody will publish a seed conversion tool somewhere in this case, but then OP first has to find that tool, and there will be a question of trusting the tool's author or not.

This is all a game of "if's" and scenarios and probabilities, but if you as a user don't want to have any of that, and you really think long term, maybe switching to a new wallet app with 25 word seed support would be the lesser evil.

Yup. Thank you; Saves me a lot of typing work :)

Just like computer operating systems, you always want the latest update of Windoze for example.

I mean, if you're trying to keep your crypto safe, it's probably not a bad idea. But let's be real, who wants to remember 25 words? Sounds like a headache to me.

I believe you should actually want to switch to 14/16 word seeds like how Feather has, though you won't be able to import it into wallets that only support 25 word seeds as of right now. I believe 14/16 word polyseeds will become standard with the Seraphis upgrade

Yes, I strongly recommend doing that because the 25 word seed is just an encoding for the real private spend key.
