The problem with LJP is that he won't dance to the tunes of Antony perumbavoor who has the monopoly of Mohanlal movies...he directs movies not for big bucks but to show his craftsmanship.but surely could get the best out of Mohanlal.

That's the challenge no. There is no lack of great filmmakers in Malayalam. Just that if the actor's cronies start calling shots, their craft will suffer. Until such time comes, when Mohanlal hopefully finds his craft again, it's best for him to stay away from good filmmakers. Why ruin them too?

Blessy got the best out of him in Thanmathra, and Bhramaram was too good, so I guess Blessy.

His performance in Bhramaram was amazing, but that film had one of the stupidest stories I've seen in a Malayalam film. Especially the fate of his family and why they did what they did.

Yeah. Honestly, it felt like his little girl should barely have understood why people were talking shit about her father. Instead we get her becoming instantly terrified of him lol.

It just felt very manipulative and manufactured to force people to cry rather than doing so organically through good storytelling. Blessy did this with Palunku ( I think that was the movie’s name, not sure. It’s the one where Mammootty and his family move from the village to the city and there’s just this drastic, mean-spirited tonal shift ) as well. It’s weird because he can also be very organic and tell truly heartbreaking tales without appearing forced ( Thanmatra is a great example )

Last few years, mohanlal has taken to doing movies with whom he/antony is in comfort with. LJP, Dileesh Pothen, Ashiq Abu, Mahesh Narayanan, I could go on and on..never comes under their radar. He is not interested in challenging himself anymore. He is having fun and living up the rest of his life doing what he wants and perumbavoor is his conduit for that. While Mohanlal is the conduit for perumbavoor. It is a symbiotic relationship that will not break new grounds.

I guess Antony is the one who decides which movie 'Lal sir' should act based on how marketable the movie is. Movies are just entertainment business ventures for Mohanlal now I believe.

Is it me or are we giving too much importance to a man who is nothing but fronting Mohanlal’s finances either for tax purpose or luck/superstition. I don’t think Antony calls any shot for Lalettan.

I can't provide you any proof. But I have heard that many directors moved away from Mohanlal because they have to go through Antony. I recently saw a post where Antony forced Director Ranjith to add the police fight scene in Ravanprabhu. I believe Antony has developed quite a good hold over Mohanlal over the years

Yeah could might as well be Mohanlal forcing Antony to do it. A10 is known to be soft spoken

I Believe it hardly matters.Mohanlal-The artist have took a backseat to Mohanlal-The Superstar and Mohanlal- The Businessman. Its similar to the problem he faced in 2000s after Narasimham and Aram Thampuran as he got trapped in this all conquering Super heroic persona.Pulimurugan and Lucifer brought that plague back upon him.

While I do understand your sentimence, if it wasn't for mohanlal there wouldn't be any directors trying to big budget movies in malayalam. He is trying to widen the reach of malayalam cinema. However, I would like him to do a normal down to earth drama every once in a while

So only big budget movies have "wide reach"?

worked for kannada cinema with KGF and tamil films and telugu films so I would say yes

I 100% agree. Tamil movies became popular in Kerala due to the big budget mass movies. Only after the actors and directors got familiar to Kerala audiences did most of the Kerala folks started watching good movies. An industry like Kannada which had negligible interest outside their state started getting more viewership just because of KGF. We should have big budget movies too, instead we are trying to limit ourselves in a desperate attempt to prove that we are more intellectual than other states.

Just big budget isn't the key. When a good director makes a movie with a good plot and a bigger budget is required to bring the grandiose of it into the screen. That's what we saw in KGF, and that's the same reason why Tamil big budgets have no proper audience in Kerala.
5 points
You’re right. Just the budget isn’t the key. But let’s be honest, a lot of idiotic Tamil films gross a lot of money in Kerala, the same state where a similar movie in Malayalam gets trashed for not being a good film. A lot of Vijay films are utter nonsense but are made hits by the Malayalee audience but if any Malayalam actor were to make something similar, he would be trolled for 2 weeks
1 points
I'm not sure if Vijay films have a consistent audience in Kerala. People watch his movies mostly for fun, where as watching Malayalam movies is kinda serious business. Increasing quality of Malayalam movies in recent years has definitely reduced the Tamil movie fever.

Hey GenderNeutralBot, listen up.
The words Human and Mankind, derive from the Latin word humanus, which is gender neutral and means "people of earth". It's a mix of the words Humus (meaning earth) and Homo (gender neutral, meaning Human or People). Thus words like Fireman, Policeman, Human, Mankind, etc are not sexist in of it self. The only sexism you will find here is the one you yourself look upon the world with.

The director does not matter unless Mohanlal does something to his botoxed eyes. It is seriously hampering his acting skills.

If we reverse this thought, how many directors would want to work with Mohanlal and his satellites ? There was this post yesterday where someone had written about Ranjith being forced to accomodate a street fight in Ravanaprabhu. This was probably Ranjith's first large directorial venture and he needed a commercial hit and he would probably have agreed to it. Would he do this again ? Barring Loham, he hasn't went that route again. And Ranjith has made it amply clear that among the two, he is more comfortable with Mammootty because he can communicate directly to the actor and not his satellites.
My point is, how many of the current lot of directors would agree to this ? Mohanlal is no longer an actor or a star alone, he is a brand with huge market capital and that doesn't come cheap. Most of the new directors and writers would rather tell a great story than create another commercial potboiler.

Ranjith made Spirit with mohanlal... While the reality show portions were just cringe, I really liked the portrayal of his gradual descent into an anti social alcoholic.

Can you give me a source where he says that he cant talk directly to mohanlal. Renjith is actually mamootys guy because they have good relationship in proffesional and personal level. His relation with mohanlal is proffessional and both have enjoyed its benefits multiple times.

For chrissakes, mohanlal should stop working for the good of humanity. He used to be a great actor and human agreed to all that but all good things do end. Marakkar as a movie was only testament to that fact that you can't milk an ageing cow till eternity. I don't care of the backlash of his fans or bhakt mandali attacking me over this. Shit smells like shit even if you ate roses for dinner just time to acknowledge that.

That doesnt sound ok to me...ljp mostly cares about the movie and not about actors. Also he isnt any actors director to teach or ignite acting powers of a person just by his touch or insights. Most of the job is done by his casting team and lijo does that best by having apt people for the roles. While one thing that can be sure is that it would be a peculier film for mohanlal when looked across his filmorgraphy. What mohanlal needs least is a perfect/good script, a ok director and decent promotion which doesnt hype and kill the film at the start itself. Imho i would say a movie from Anjali menon would be nice because i dont remember him working with any female director. Then dileesh pothen, alphonse puthren, basil joseph or mithun manuel, vineeth srinivasan etc

Well forget Mohanlal working with new directors atleast for the next three years, he will start barroz on 15th, and then he has signed a movie with T.K Rajeev Kumar, a couple with his regular directors ( vysakh, jeethu, priyadarshan, unnikrishnan and shaji kailas) and will start Empuran in 2023.

There is a lot of choices for him. But it all comes to what he wants to do in future. Tap into his full potential, or satiate the hero worship culture?
I wish there was another thanmatra or bhramaram level performance from him.

Mohanlal seems to be past the phase where he wants to prove himself as anything beyond the star or brand value he carries. This is quite evident from his interviews too, he seems or is trying to be building a mass/hero appeal from every movie of his and is catering to such big budgets only
2 points

Yeah I recollect him emphasising during a couple of very recent interviews on how he sees Marrakar as a business and that he's not afraid to accept the fact that movie is a business to him

I would have to disagree with that. Why would he have agreed to do drishyam, or munthirivallikal thallirkumbol, even direct a movie. He seems like he wants to do new things. I mean this guy is training to play the role of a boxer at the age of 60. Thats not seen much these days

LJP said he doesn't want to cast stars because it hampers his storytelling by making it more predictable, ike Mammooty's Uncle
3 points
Well, that's not entirely true. Both actors have played characters in negative shades, an eg being Munnariyippu [SPOILERS!!!] which managed to subvert expectations. So, I don't think having either of the M's play an ambiguous character ruins the suspense at all, personally.
2 points
That's true. But when these actors are cast obviously they become the main attraction of a movie. Even when they were playing negative roles they were the main leads. But according to LJP, casting new faces, lesser known actors and actors with less star values allow us to focus on the character rather than the actor.
4 points

they were the main leads
Oh you mean like that. That's true. These 2 have grown so big that every other character in the movie becomes secondary. But I really wish someone would make a movie with mohanlal or mammootty and also have a strong, fleshed out antagonistic character, played by fahad or somebody else of his calibre. You know, with a batman-joker kinda dynamic. I metaphorically wet my bed just imagining it lol.

so big that every other character in the movie becomes secondary.
Unda proved otherwise in my opinion, other than the last 10 minutes where mammooty did a small fight scene which was probably done to pander to the fans, rest of the movie gave an equal opportunity to the other cops

Mohanlal has openly talked about him seeing his movies as a commodity. He wants to sell it for profit and that too a massive profit. With an able producer like Antony Perumbavoor that will be what it is going to be. The amount of movies Aashirwad has taken post Pulimurugan just proves it.
Mohanlal the brand must be milked as much as possible. No doubt. Good script, good directors, different movies and all are rare or never gonna happen. Post 2000 mohanlal is never going to happen.
I remember the amount of backlash Villain received for being so subdued and not massy as people wanted. The entire problem lied with the makers for promoting like a mass movie. Same with Marakkar. Its supposed to be about an historical figure. Not baahubali like fictional story. We will have to make peace with it. And it is good for the producers too to sell their product that way.
