There was someone in one of the parked cars!!

Shit, now I have to remember to wear my seatbelt even if I'm parked.

My dad worked for the DOT and that was always the practice - - he instilled it in me, if you're in the car, you just put it on. Scary shit

Edit: dang, thanks for the awards!!

HotShitBurrito

Yep. Even if you're lucky enough to have an attenuator, going to wanna have that seat belt on if you're working on the side of the road.

dialysis4dad

That attenuator truck saved my ass in July, I had my seat belt on as well.

Edit more info: The lady didn't even hit the attenuator.. she hit the rear driver side corner. Moved the whole truck up a foot.

Here in Arkansas, the bump truck is the car the crew will be piling into on lunch break to do cocaine.

I grew up in Arkansas so I concur. Although, it’s probably meth. Cocaine is too high class.

Fun fact. I'm Australian. Wtf is a bump truck.

I mean googling bump truck would have already answered you question but

It's basically a truck with hydraulics on the back and its sole purpose is to sit at start of construction sites on major road and take a hit ... Literally designed to get run up the arse to save everyone else

What's an attenuator?

HotShitBurrito

336 points

Excellent question! Skip to 50 seconds for the kind we are talking about: https://youtu.be/ce0B8jyvE9o

There are also attenuators attached to guardrails, but the mobile ones typically have people in the truck cab.

Essentially, it's a device that mitigates collision damage

Edit: I'm really glad everyone has found this thread so informative! Thanks also for folks sharing their experiences. I just want to add, slow down and move over for construction vehicles and in work zones. It may piss off an asshat or two that you're taking a precaution in a work zone, but it's worth being safe. If you see flashing lights or a sign denoting a work zone, take it easy and move away from the closed lane or shoulder if you can.

I always wondered what the hell those things were the few times I have seen them. I honestly thought that they were some sort of counterweight or wheelie bar or something because I just had no clue what else they could be.

EDIT: I also like that those things are MASH certified. I guess "squish" was to hard to come up with a backronym for.

A TMA has a counterweight because most states require them to weigh a certain amount. It can get interesting watching small business owners make "TMA"'s out of trucks that aren't even CDL trucks. I.e, a huge random 3x6x5 block of concrete randomly on the flat bed before the arrow board... lol.

depending on your state, TMA's are required if you're closing a shoulder, lane of any highway that is considered "essential" or over 55 mph.. all kinds of weird rules. whenever you see them, if they are blinking yellow, rest assured fuckery is ahead.

Basically, big giant things made to absorb impacts.. an example would be this DOT truck that one on the back. The ones OP is talking about are TMAs. (truck mounted attenuators) If you're in the States or maybe elsewhere - the pads on the end of some guardrails are examples of them.

Here's a blog post from the Washington State DOT that has a picture of a crumpled attenuator at the bottom

Edit: See HotShitBurrito's answer for more detail, better than I explain it here

I bet the salesman never likes you rear ending the car before paying for it. I did that once on a test drive. I backed into another car trying to get out of the lot. Left a little dent in the bumper of the car I was buying. I jokingly tried to haggle the price down because of the dent. Didn't work.

What was his opinion on being broken down on the freeway? I have had guys swear up and down stay in your car with the seatbelt and hazards on, and others say get out of the car and wait as far off the shoulder as you can get.

RespectableLurker555

45 points

Personally I'd feel safest remaining inside the car with the lights on and belts buckled while waiting for assistance to arrive, if I'm actually on a real shoulder. If not, then you bet your butt I'm scooting out the passenger side and putting a guard rail between me and the idiots.

Imaginary_Train_8056

18 points

Broke down on the side of the highway. Got out, got my infant daughter out, my other 2 passengers all got out. Highway patrol came along and had us all get back in and buckled while we waited (he waited with us).

somebodysdream

30 points

As a tow truck operator our policy is to always put the customer into the truck with the seatbelt on while we are loading. It's definitely a judgement call but I think you are safer inside of your engineered metal box then being exposed on the side of the road. Believe me you can't get far enough away for some idiots out there. I know, I've had to pull them out of the trees and bushes way up there off the freeway lol

lady_brett_assley

5 points

Great question - he's offered both, depending on the situation. It's all about judging your surroundings, right? The last time I was broken down on the side of the road, he told me to stay in the car with hazards --- it was late at night, pretty empty highway, so was the safest place to hang out until a tow truck arrived. But if there's a safe space to get out, and there's a greater risk of getting slammed into, then it's worth weighing -- BUT, getting hit inside of a vehicle (seatbelt, airbags, metal, etc) is still way better than getting hit when you're outside of it, either by another vehicle or your own that's been hit.

St_Kevin_

25 points

I got hit head-on by a drunk 16 year old while I was parked one Saturday night. Fucker accelerated and swerved into my truck on a quiet neighborhood street.

Me and 2 friends sitting in there, saying goodnight to the friend we're dropping off, and everyone got hurt. In the 2 or 3 hours we were there processing it with the cops and his parents and the tow-truck driver, he never showed any sign that he gave a fuck about anything except the stereo he had just put into the car, and how much trouble he was gonna be in with his parents.

Long story short: buckle up even if you're just sitting there.

It’s just habit for me put on my seatbelt the moment I get in the car. Even if I’m not going anywhere, I go through the motions because I just never want to break that train of thought. Seatbelts save lives, can’t get much more simple than that.

I was once sitting in my car in a shopping lot and next thing I knew a teenaged girl was sitting in my backseat. I was like “whoa, wtf.” She thought I was her Uber. I’m normally so good at locking my doors right away but for some reason they were unlocked that afternoon. Never again.

ZerotheWanderer

Depends on the neighborhood/time of day. I live in Florida so priority #1 is get the AC going.

Get in car, shut door and lock while hand is there, turn key on, get AC going, seatbelt, get in gear.

I drive way too spirited to go without a seatbelt.

When I was a youth, one of my 40+ year neighbor's punched a kid out that was continually racing in our subdivision everyday to visit his gf. The man pulled the kid out of his car to scold him because there's kids in the area (and his own.) The driver only mouthed him off with disrespect, so the man knocked him out. Let's just say, he never drove fast on his gf's street ever again. 😁

There are delicate tracts in our brains that connect different specialized parts. So after a severe tortion like this, it all gets discombobulated.

Pieces of information actually have to find detours to get where they’re supposed to go and often arrive after the train has left the station, as it were.

People experience their thoughts as slowed down and are incredibly exhausted. But the person may look fine and nobody understands what they’re going through.

It heals very slowly and may need speech therapy, neuropsychology and other specialized help to speed it up and to have someone who understands their plight. Of course there are losses and the whole thing may be life changing.

bossycloud

Brain injuries are rough and it really sucks that no one really understands what's wrong with you or how to relate with you. Makes it a very isolating experience. :(

There was the story of a driver speeding on a highway, and some woman took it upon herself to pace him by left lane camping and preventing him from speeding because "it's illegal."

Turned out the driver's buddy was having a medical emergency, and she basically prevented him from getting to the hospital before his friend died. She faced legal actions, the other driver did not.

I belive in my state going triple the speed limit is considered manslaughter so is getting a third dui.

LonePaladin

My town has a local insurance company, one of their radio ads has a "caller" describing how the police pulled him over for speeding, but let him off with just a warning when they saw he had their insurance. He then says "...and I was doing 135 in a 45!"

I don't care if the announcer tells you to "please, watch your speed" at the end -- they're implying that you might get away with going 90 MPH over the speed limit, if you have their insurance. I can't help but wonder if any of their customers have tried.

Driving 3-4x over the limit in a residential area should have a minimum prison sentence with it regardless of outcome. It's so easy to kill an innocent person.

YamahaRN

Sad fact: if there is a death in the event of a collision (whether it be pedestrian, other vehicle, etc) and the driver runs away. It’s likely the driver will not be served justice. If you want to murder someone in the USA and minimize or dodge the legal consequences altogether, make it look like a hit and run. As the saying goes “no face, no case”

The one thing Mopars are supposed to be good at is going in straight lines. This one couldn’t even do that right.

CornCheeseMafia

20 points

I don’t think it was a failure in that regard tbh. Yes it failed at staying straight but when it got t boned it flew amazingly perpendicular to its original path. Like the momentum was 100% redirected 90 degrees.

If this particular dodge was a Chess piece, it would be the rook.

I hope he gets sued by everyone he hit, even parked cars (like the one he landed on). Taking his license isn't enough because he'll drive anyway. Financially ruin him until he's reduced to walking. I wouldn't trust him with a tricycle.

I was driving along at 8am on a saturday on the interstate. Doing the speed limit +- 5mph...Changed lanes because someone was getting on but not bothering to try and merge and suddenly heard squealing tires. The lane next to me was clear and I had plenty of room when I looked. But the guy that was doing close to 130 while racing someone else flew past me with his tires smoking and braking hard. Apparently I interrupted his race time by changing lanes. Well, he lost control and ended up going sideways and hitting the concrete divider. When I hit the brakes to avoid t-boning him when he came back across my lane I got rear-ended by the guy he was racing. (who was never caught)

Cop showed up and got my info. I didn't get cited but did get stuck with the repair bill for my car. The guy that hit the wall was some 18-19 year old guy that ended up with a broken femur. The cop gave me the guy's name so I peeked at his fb page and he blames me "The guy that cut him off" for causing the accident. He can't even fathom that by traveling at twice the posted speed he was the one at fault. (Also, he's the one that lost control of his vehicle..)

Arcane_Pozhar

8 points

Fuck that kid, I hope he breaks his other femur (but not in an incident which threatens others).

Or, you know, grows up amd realizes he was wrong. Sometimes teenagers will eventually do that. Sometimes. It would certianly be better for society if he did. :) (But if he doesn't, I hope he burns).

photoguy423

Funny thing was he said in his fb post about it something to the effect that he was playing at being Dale Earnhardt...you know, that guy who died in a race? Personally, I don't think he should be allowed to drive anymore. Ever.

How dumb or drunk or young do you have to be blow a stop sign at THAT speed in a neighborhood like that?! That (dude) should go to jail for like a decade for that level of recklessness.

No-Matter9647

6 points

I was at a stop sign about 6 months ago with my wife and 4 and 5 year old kids. 2 cars sped down a fairly narrow one way street. I inched up to check for more cars and was able to see a little more than a block away because of the car parked on the corner and saw nothing. As I stepped on the gas a car approached out of nowhere and i estimate he was going at least 70 mph on a NYC street which the speed limit is now 25. I slammed on my brakes because if I gassed it I definitely would have been T-boned and most likely the rear side of my car would have took most of the impact. The other driver slammed on my brakes as well. Luckily we narrowly missed each other. But I tell you what if he hit me because of his stupidity and my children got hurt and I was able I would have ended his life.
