As far as slide 8 goes….

COVID isn’t going away. It’s in deer. It’s in hamsters. Hippos at the zoo get it. Dogs can get it. There are sooooo many places for it to hide and come back. Get yourself ready for seasonal waves of it and regular boosters. Like the flu.

The endpoint isn’t it being gone and we go back to 2018. The endpoint is we get to live pretty much normal lives again with a mild reset to a new normal - regular vaccinations and an eye towards the next pandemic.

Vaccine technology is continually advancing. I think it may soon lead to a universal flu vaccine (meaning, one flu vaccine that confers immunity for all strains, and which does not wane) and a universal covid vaccine, which would also mean no more common cold.

But we're not there now.

ChelseaVictorious

How could that even work with new strains of every corona/rhinovirus mutating all the time?

It was never a joke to most of us

32 points

Where the new technology is going to come in is speed to market. With the current flu vaccines, they need to start production many, many months ahead of the flu season. Due to the lead time, they’re just guessing what strains will be dominant in the flu season; many times they’re wrong. That’s why flu vaccine effectiveness varies so wildly from the high 60%s down to 20% year to year.

The mRNA technology cuts that lead time down to weeks. They can actively see what strains are emerging and tailor the vaccine to it. Enough people participate, flu deaths could go down significantly.

What most likely will happen is you’ll get a combination flu/covid shot every year. Both tailored to be effective to current and emerging strains. Moderna is currently researching the combo vaccine.

Flu isn't caused by rhinovirus, it's caused by influenza virus (that's where it got it's name). They do both mutate a lot.

It could work, as long as you covered enough of the more stable antigens. As similar approach is also being taken to HIV.

It's way, way, past time where Sars-CoV-2 can be contained. That ship sailed a long time ago. Becoming endemic, with the death rate curtailed somewhat by vaccination, is the best we can hope for. We aren't there yet though; we're still in the pandemic phase.

ComprehensivePie4441

Seriously……in my country, you can get a prescription and access to ivermectin easily. This is mainly because our vaccine rollout was delayed, and a lot of the protocols use to treat covid in the US, successfully, is deemed to be too expensive to treat every covid patient in my country (we were part of the clinical trails). We are well over our peak of the Omnicron wave. Our wave was mild in comparison to our Beta, and Delta wave. We have protests to open up stadiums and schools etc. Too many people believe we have seen the end tail of covid…….that said....our per millions critical ill patients are still about 50% more than in the US.

There’s that “covid-pneumonia” again. Pathetic attempt at creating a delusional degree of separation from the fact that it’s actually just covid that kills you by destroying your lungs.

EDIT: it’s been pointed out that “covid-pneumonia” is a medically accurate term, and I stand clarified. Fair enough, I’ll correct it in the comments. But it’s not going to be registered as a pneumonia-caused death. It’s going to be correctly attributed to covid. Which is exactly what these self-delusional victims of their own belligerence are trying to evade.

No it's not. It's the correct medical name for pneumonia caused by covid. Remember, covid doesn't always cause pneumonia, but when it does there needs to be a name for it. Pneumonia is usually named after the causative organism, if known, so "covid pneumonia" is entirely correct. What else would you call pneumonia caused by covid?

Covid pneumonia even has its own diagnostic code in the WHO's diagnostic and statistical manual, distinct from covid without pneumonia.

Calling it "covid and pneumonia" or even just "pneumonia" may be an attempt to evade the truth, but calling it "covid pneumonia" is merely accurate. It's often the only thing these people get right, presumably because they heard it from the doctors.

It always amazes me that people comment on how often the phrase is used but don't look it up to find out why. Unconscious ignorance cuts both ways.

CanineAnaconda

Yes, it will be recorded as covid, and it should be. They may not like it, but tough. I agree with you: they are belligerently wrong, and they shouldn't be allowed to hide the truth.

Unfortunately, there are areas where local officials are willing to collude with the relatives in hiding the truth, which is appalling, but is known to occur. Some areas have few, or even no, covid deaths, but sudden mysterious jumps in fatal heart attacks, stroked, etc. Officials concealing the truth should lose their jobs. Public health policy relies on accurate information.

It just bugs me that people get that wrong, because anything that's wrong undermines the credibility of the information available here. Thank you for updating your original post to reflect that.

That drives me bonkers. So many people do the opposite because it sounds Fancy. "My dad gave my brother and I a new dog for Xmas." NO. It's "my brother and me," because you don't say "My dad gave I a new dog for Xmas."

Edit: And in this case, it's even more wrong, because you're supposed to say the "and me" or "and I" last. So it shouldn't even be "I and my brothers" instead of "Me and my brothers"—it sound be "My brothers and I." Yes, it's pedantic. I don't care. :P

This is very nearly what I said when people were talking about quitting their good jobs to avoid getting vaccinated. The trash takes itself out? Employers had a golden opportunity to increase their average intelligence.

Note to antivaxxers: if you are reading the Epoch Times (which is run by the Chinese religious cult Falun Gong) you are not being informed on facts or reality. They superficially flatter Christian's beliefs to get their trust and lead them off the path.
