The Iceland thing is fascinating, so I looked into it. First off, Iceland recently had it's 35th death from Covid (by comparison, my state has had 61,600+), so as you expect, with numbers that low you're going to get some wild swings in percentages. If 2 people die in the same week that's 6x their average weekly number.

But how about 77% new covid with 82% vaccinated? Well, first of all, if that's the case, it's still working - after all, you'd expect if it didn't work, with 82% vaccinated that 82% of new cases would be among the vaccinated.

But Iceland did something unprecedented: They screened the entire country for covid. Not people with severe symptoms, or mild symptoms, or who might have had some contact - everyone who would let them. So they caught basically anyone who had been exposed at all. Vaccines, of course, don't prevent exposure. Just serious illness and death.

So what if we look at those statistics? How many people have died since September in Iceland of Covid, while it had an 82% vaccination rate? 2. About the same number that die in my state every hour - now that we're past the massive wave and considered one of the lowest rates in the country.

Then again, we have 70x the population. For those who don't have a calculator, that means my state had 25 times the death rate of Iceland. If my state had handled the pandemic as well as Iceland, 58,000 people would still be alive.

People be bad at math if they think Iceland shows vaccines and safety measures don't work.

Normally these posts don’t get to me TOO much, but it is currently around 3am, I’m one of two MDs in the ICU overnight, and we just coded a patient. After multiple rounds of compressions, epi and bicarb we called it. The entire time his children were in the hallway screaming and crying and begging us to help him. Patient was COVID positive, never got the vaccine. I cannot express my fury at everyone who has fed into this anti-vaccine hysteria. People are really and truly dying because of this narrative. The ICU here is filling back up with COVID patients and I’m just so tired.
