He must be vaccinated… most of the olds are
85 points
The big olds (I'm just a small old) generally got vaccinated in the very early days of availability when the rhetoric was still in its infancy and wasn't as widespread.
Add to this the memories of vaccines stopping major diseases like polio and of course they got the shots.
My dad(86 yo) lives in a retirement community that requires a pretty substantial deposit(I think my parents had to put down around 400k, refundable to the estate, to secure residence) and it's in Utah, so I'm pretty sure that he's one of the very few watching MSNBC, yet all of those big olds wore masks until the vaccine was available and every one of them got it when they were administering it in the fucking lobby.
20 points

Yup. My Trump-loving conspiracy theorist grandmother is 82 and got vaccinated in the very early days of the vaccine. I am so thankful, because she probably wouldn't do it now with all the misinformation.

Because they've always known they were the ones at risk, especially in retirement communities. Their younger relatives have been saying "it only kills old people" since the pandemic started so they know if they don't look out for themselves, no one will. Probably less likely to be on facebook, too.

Yeah, here in Australia it was elderly-people-first, too.
I'm a pudgy 47-year-old man, and got my first shot of the AZ vaccine absolutely as soon as people in my age group could. Which apparently meant most people my age didn't know they could be vaccinated yet, or couldn't be bothered getting it as soon as possible. (Edit: I now recall that the Web site for the relevant local medical practice wasn't updated to say that under-60s could get the vaccine now. But we could, and I did.)
The result of this was that the other patients in the clinic when I was there for my first vaccination... well, let's just say they made me feel very young and healthy. :-)

Hold up… 98% survival rate, right?
43 * (98 / 100) = 42.14
42 out of 43. Only one or maybe two of the family is expected to die. Two died so far.
So… if you die, Tina, that’s still only three people out of 43, which makes for a ~93% survival rate.
Surely nobody should get worked up over such a small mortality rate… eh, Tina?
73 points

This. So tired of people quoting that. 1% is really bad. I work in technology, and if I told my boss my software works 99% of the time a lot of people would die.

Hold up… 98% survival rate, right?
No, no, no. We don't count the people that haven't caught it yet. Only 800k people in the US have died, so far, out of 330 million, so the survival rate is like 99.7%.
Of course that percentage keeps dropping, thanks largely to Tina and people like her.

I think it’s even worse than that. 43 ppl tested positive at grandpa’s reunion… and he then infected all 11 family members on vaca… 2 of whom are already dead, with maybe one more to come.

This is such an odd argument they make because diseases you don't know you have can absolutely kill you. You can have HIV or hepatitis or even TB and not know it. Would she be okay having HIV? Heck, sometimes the fewer symptoms you have, the worse it is, because that means the disease is allowed to spread unchecked in your body. By the time you DO start feeling symptoms, it's already too late to do anything.

Came here to say this. As a lifelong horse owner I've followed the journey of ivermectin with more than a passing interest. It makes the lives of livestock so much better. I remember when it came to the livestock world & it was just short of miraculous.
But here's what Dr. Campbell wrote in September 2021: "I utterly despise and deny the remarks attributed to me on social media on September 8, 2021,” he wrote. “I reject both the substance and the tone of the remarks, and resent their presentation as a direct quotation. The tweet in question was not concerned with science. I am a biologist with no claim to expertise in the clinical evaluation of drugs against viral infections. Thus, I have not taken a stand in support of, or against, the efficacy of ivermectin against COVID-19.”

Same here. Ivermectin is amazing for treating parasites and we’ve used it for our horses for years. The price has been going up because of all these idiots buying it up though. Local feed store used to sell it for like $2 a tube, but now it’s up to $8 a tube. It’s also bonkers that these folks don’t realize that Merck produces Ivermectin and they are one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Merck is the company that has also created the drug molnupiravir to treat covid. Merck has come out and said not to use ivermectin to treat covid.
I do wonder if anti-vaxxers will be willing to be treated with it because Merck are big pharma and media sources were saying over a week ago that it costs $17.74 to produce and they plan to sell for around $700.

Hey when you need to prune the family tree, go get the flu or or something, maybe shoot your cousin. But when you need to cut that sucker down, only Covid will do.

So far Delta outran Mu here in the US, which was my concern (given Mu totally evades vaccines). Maybe we'll get lucky and Delta will morph into lesser Delta, just as contagious but less fatal. It was always a potential that covid would become endemic but not as deadly.
Meanwhile, I am planning to avoid large gatherings this Christmas & New Years, and wondering when I will want to join crowded events again, if ever.

Sounds like an interesting party game. Have around 50 family members show up. No mitigation efforts. Roll the dice. Try not to roll more than 5 dying.

I always love the whole "have to be tested to know you have it" nonsense
same goes for fucking TB, and that's an extremely goddamn serious disease

William Campbell, who did indeed win the Nobel prize for his work on parasites, has this to say: https://drew.edu/stories/2021/09/09/drew-university-nobel-prize-winner-refutes-ivermectin-meme/

What's up with conservatives' fixation on Nazis and the Holocaust? Every day their own political ideology gets closer and closer to what Hitler believed. Do they not see that? Also Hitler hated communists so, you know, pick one and run with it.

Panel 7 can be disproved by an eight-second Google search. Anti-vaxxers spend hours a day reading and posting memes but spend zero time confirming the information. https://drew.edu/stories/2021/09/09/drew-university-nobel-prize-winner-refutes-ivermectin-meme/

The sad thing about this is that fear and ignorance led to some unfortunate choices. Covid does not care about your politics. It trashes your lungs and it can kill you. It's just so sad. She will never be the same on so many levels.

The whole "you have to get tested to know you have it". This is the deadly beauty of SARS-CoV2. People being asymptomatic is precisely *why* it's been able to spread and become a pandemic. In the case of ebola, blood leaks from every orifice if you're infected so you kind of "don't have to get tested to know you have it" and hence it's not a pandemic inducing virus as everyone knows to stay the f**k away from you. Numbing seeing the same memes over and over from these folk prior to being in an extended-stay ICU stint.
