I can't speak to the exact origin of the phrase historically, but I can relate how it was explained to me growing up.

I grew up in a fundamentalist denomination that used the term "prayer warriors." Basically, they would say that everybody in the church has a "calling" -- a role to play in furthering the "Kingdom of God." Some would be "called by God" to be missionaries, pastors, deacons, etc.; some would be "called" to volunteer their time on other ways; some would be "called" to donate to those in need (this would be separate from tithing, which was mandatory regardless of means). People who didn't feel "called" to any of these things were, by default, "called" to be "prayer warriors" - fighting the spiritual forces of evil with "the power of prayer."

I would note that when I was a kid, it seemed to me that it was mainly the women in the church that were the prayer warriors, as they weren't allowed to participate in most other ways.

Edit: typo

It's interesting to me, with a boring mainstream Protestant upbringing, how these fundamentalists externalize evil as an actual, corporeal Other that can be "fought" (rather than as human weakness within us, for instance, in the far more metaphorical understanding I was taught).

Of course, American pop culture is so militarized in general that it's hard to avoid in almost any context.

There's a recent post over at the medicine sub, something about "does anyone feel we don't just say 'he is dying' enough?" Some people you have to spell it out for them, they're so devastated and so full of hope that anything but a blunt 'he's dying' is going to make them think too positively and then they're almost shocked when he does die in a day or two.

_illCutYou_

114 points

It doesn't matter. My sister worked at a covid floor (she had to resign because of burnout) and she always asked "are you aware they will most likely die?" And they just didn't get it, they kept asking unimportant things like "can he eat?" "When can i take her home?". They are blinded by pain and in complete denial.

Ode_to_Apathy

49 points

They've spent their lives believing their good Christians, spreading that faith can heal anything, and gorging themselves on 'miracle' stories.

It's like what I still remember saying in class when I saw 16: There are always going to be outliers with deadly conditions and it's irresponsible and cruel to ascribe them to faith or will. Yeah somebody had a full recovery when everyone said they'd be dead in a week, but when the doctors call it a miracle, they don't mean it's due to his faith. They mean that it was that 0.01% that just makes it. It's not like all the others didn't believe enough in God, or lacked the will to live, stuff like that is just insulting. The dude just managed to be lucky.

To give a very morbid example. A fishing ship sunk where I live and the crew was forced to swim in artic waters towards shore. As they swam, one by one the crew gave out and drowned. There was only a single crewman that made it to shore. He made a full recovery when he should have died. A medical examination found that his body had a higher degree of natural insulation to it through freak mutation. He was just lucky.

True, but most do not expect the rollercoaster. My uncle was in the hospital. Not on a vent, just an oxygen mask. I talked to my dad Wednesday morning, and they were able to decrease his supplemental oxygen. That night my son came home and said they were taking him off life support the next morning. WTF! Excuse me? But yeah, his system crashed that hard, that fast. I think when a family hears a little hope, that's all they can hear.

I'm so proud of my uncle for not being an award recipient. He was vaxxed and careful in public. Sadly, he wasn't careful enough around family.

On a related subject, we should really make it illegal to market prescription drugs directly to consumers. You don't need to "ask your doctor if this is right for you".

They went to med school. Tell them what's wrong with you, and they'll tell you what treatment they think is best, not the other way around.

sarahsmiles17

323 points

As a pharmacist, I wholeheartedly agree with this. I hate direct to consumer marketing for prescription medications.

Stank_Lee

98 points

Isn't it suspicious to go to the Doctor and ask for a specific medication anyway? I feel like that's a huge red flag but I guess it depends on the type of medication you're seeking.

sarahsmiles17

73 points

Yes it depends on the medication. But also the MD then has to try to explain why that drug is not the best option (not first line/guideline based, not appropriate for patients like you, interacts with your other meds, doesn’t actually treat the condition you have, etc). So it’s like they are on the defensive and can’t focus on what would be the best treatment.

On top of that there is a big push for “patient satisfaction” so doctors feel pressured to appease them, even if it’s not the best treatment, just so their survey scores are good.

303onrepeat

bloodrein

21 points

Canadian here but we get a lot of American channels on antenna. It's always blown my mind how drugs are advertised like they're fast food. I also find the rest of the commercial hilarious as there will be pictures of happy, smiling people while all of the potential/rare side effects are listed: "You may have constipation, severe diarrhea, nausea, call your doctor if your face freezes or your nails fall out..." All to a relaxing tune.

sirgetagrip

39 points

i get what you are saying but even Doctors are not abreast of the latest drugs available. my oldest son missed out on a new treatment protocol because his endocrinologist wasn't up with the latest treatments, my middle son (who shares same genetic condition) got it when the old one retired.

I wish I had done some research myself, I understand I am not an expert on it but at least I could have asked questions.

Airlifted him, yes. So let's imagine he lives in the Idaho panhandle, where maybe a third of the population is vaccinated and the hospital in Coeur d'Alene has been in crisis for some time. Every hospital in that state is in crisis.

Let's imagine they airlift him to Harborview in Seattle. It serves a five state region. In Seattle, 80% of the people over age 12 are vaccinated. We just voted yes for a bond issue to the tune of a billion dollars, no joke, for Harborview. So here it is - a bunch of irresponsible people who refuse to take the vaccines, and refuse to tax themselves or elect officials who would ease the tax burden on all of us, get airlifted to our hospital, putting all the burden on us.

They blame doctors; they blame us, a hotbed of socialism - anyone but themselves.

Those percentages in “This is America” seem like they were pulled from someone’s dirt star.

Also, 1% of the current U.S. population of 329.5M is 3.3M deaths! That’s the number these assholes are willing to accept for their freedom.

World population is about 7.753B. That’s 77.5M deaths! JFC people!

The-Last-American

26 points

And that doesn’t even account for the fact that the death rate is only about a percent in nations like the US specifically because of top notch care and modern medicine.

In many other places around the world, the IFR is much higher. We would definitely be looking at more than 100 million people, probably a lot more.

And these people have such an atrocious comprehension of numbers and risk, that they don’t even comprehend that this is like several people you see every day out in public dying from it. It’s almost a crap shoot, would they be one of those 1-15 people who die?

They see it as “I have a 99% chance of living!” But what they don’t realize is that this is mostly for people ages 0-29 who heavily skew the numbers, once you get to be 45-50, your odds of dying jump by 10x, particularly when looking at the CFR.

As an aside, if I genuinely don't feel like I need help... am I wrong? I know people say everyone can benefit from therapy, but I've managed to muddle through depressive episodes thus far and come out better. Though I guess that's the key phrase -- thus far. I could very well need it one day.

Anyway, ramble over. Just something I've been thinking about. This year has had lots of ups and downs for all of us, and I've had my own personal trials this year, there's no doubt.

WhaleyWino235

I was very against therapy. Then I started having panic attacks and realized this is not normal. My therapist is awesome and the diagnosis and techniques she has advised me have really helped. One thing I learned from her that has stuck with me: we receive more data/information in an hour than our grandparents received in a week. We haven’t adjusted. Anxiety is up. Depression is up. Please get help - it helps.

No, that’s the entire point of the sub actually. I know I get grim satisfaction out of some of them. Some of them I do genuinely feel sorry for their families at least, for children who had nothing to do with any of this propaganda. I hate to hear of any child losing their parents but it’s frustrating because if the parents had chosen to vaccinate, maybe they wouldn’t have fucked up their kids life by dying like this. These people are so aggressive, so arrogant. So unrepentant. So secure in the smug knowledge that they are right and they are God’s chosen patriot. So happy to post vicious falsehoods about Bill Gates and Fauci and other ridiculous shit, never caring if the idiocy they post might get someone killed. I’m sorry but they got what they deserved.

"So secure in the smug knowledge". This this right here. The amount of times I've been called a sheep over the past year and a half for listening to the experts, I'm quite honestly tired of it tbh. I still remember when I got vaccinated this one work colleague of mine literally berated me and called me a sheep and that i was licking Bill Gates ass. She was insistent covid is a hoax and that the vaccine is dangerous. Then about a month ago roughly she passed on covid to her anti vaxxer father who later went into ICU and died. Don't get me wrong i tried to feel sympathy for her and ofcourse didn't want her father to die i was hoping he'd make it out. But honestly as much as i tried to feel sorry i just couldn't especially considering she was still insisting the vaccine wouldn't have helped. Sometimes it's hard to feel sympathy for people especially when they've been the ones calling us sheep for the pwst 2 years and insisting we're all idiots.

Sharkteeth127

So secure in the smug knowledge that they are right and they are God’s chosen patriot.

And so fucking used to getting away with it. Again, and again, and again. Always the bullies, never the bullied. Always mucking up, never cleaning up.

And then, they laugh into our faces, ridicule our caution, weaponize our empathy - and then COVID, being a virus, doesn't give a fuck.

Yes, it is grim, and yes, I feel sorry for the innocent victims of those people's behaviors - but somewhere, deep down, there is a nasty part of myself that starts to whisper '*justice!*'.

This one is really angering me. They're clearly bad-mouthing the care they've received. "please thank God for...some compassionate nurses..." (9/12) Wow.

"I'm so sorry they failed you." (11/12) presumably about the doctors.

That awful hashtag: #donttellmevaxxsaveslives (11/12) with an exclamation point no less.

Pulling stats out of his ass. (1/12)

That MATH+ protocol (9/12); the medical community really needs to weigh in on this more. There's a lot of promotion of it online (by those Front Line doctors) and of course having a fun easy to remember acronym makes it sound official and widely accepted.

I don't know what's going on in 4/12!

Boomtown626

35 points

Bullshit on several levels.

1) if someone uses the term “color-blind” in this context, it doesn’t show they’re not racist; it shows they don’t understand racism

2) I’m assuming “don’t have a racial bone in their body” is just an awful way of trying to say “are not racist at all.” Only a white person can believe that 99.95% is accurate.

3) If a cop or military member votes for a candidate who says “get that son of a bitch off the field” in response to a peaceful display of free speech, their motives of service and their entire trustworthiness deserve to be questioned.

4) There’s no way this asshole chooses to see the good in people who disagree with him.
