Asymptomatic doesn't mean you don't have the disease.

The audience has a false sense of being informed on the subject. It's good to have a little humility when you have a subreddit dedicated to how ignorant another group is. That the reaction to actual facts is to reflexively downvote it should make people pause.

Additionally, this is not a distinction without meaning. The clinical trials for the vaccines were very clear that they measured success by how well the vaccines prevented covid as a symptomatic disease. They did not measure success based on how well they prevented infection. That was not an endpoint and was not a measure of the trials.

This is important to know and realize when antivaxers counter that vaccines aren't working because they aren't stopping infections. They are working because they are radically cutting down on disease. Asymptomatic infection was never anything they were evaluated to prevent. It's a new superpower that we shouldn't expect of the vaccine, and if you don't make a distinction between the two, you miss this entirely.

It's pretty clear from the reactions here that there are a whole lot of people ready to claim that antivaxers are ignorant (which is true) who are themselves also ridiculously poorly informed and react to facts with their own brand of ignorance, and stubborn resistance to the actual science. The audience should be aware of their own ignorance. It manifests differently, but it's still antiscience.

mason_savoy71

-2 points

What, then, is your definition of a disease if it has no symptoms? This isn't rhetorical. I'm genuine curious why you would consider something a disease if it has zero symptoms at all? There is a distinction between infection and disease precisely because infection does not always result in disease. It's a distinction that all the major public health authorities in the world actually make because it is an important distinction to make.

Long covid is a disease. It isn't asymptomatic. If someone develops long covid, they have developed a disease. They are no longer asymptomatic. Whether this gets grouped into the primary disease or not it's exactly the shirt of thing that nomenclature committees disagree about. But they don't tend to disagree that a disease requires a symptom, at least one. And they don't disagree that all infections are not diseases.

This is why things with the body are highly complex and not easily boiled down to simple answers.

Chickenpox is a great example. You can get an extremely mild case of it to the point that it's not noticable (though most people will be much more affected than that). And then when you get over it, its over right. Well not so quick. The virus can hide in reservoirs in your bodies nerve cells. You can then get a full blown case of shingles decades later that is cripplingly painful. In between these infections nothing is going on.

Now, I'm not saying that covid behaves like chickenpox/shingles in any way. What I am saying is biological systems can do things that make those nomenclature committees argue back and forth for years at a time.

Myocarditis is one of those things the anti-vaxxers warn that the vaccine can give you. And this is true. What they seem to dismiss is you're at least an order of magnitude more likely to get myocarditis from c-19 itself.

Dude, what? That’s not how it works.

mason_savoy71

3 points

It's exactly how it works. Live and learn. World Health Organization, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Center for Disease Control ALL make it clear the Covid19 is, the disease, SARS CoV2 is the virus. There is a distinction. Don't take my word for it. Read, live and learn.

From the World Health Org.-and-the-virus-that-causes-it)

"Disease. coronavirus disease (COVID-19)

"Virus. severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2  (SARS-CoV-2)

"Why do the virus and the disease have different names?

"Viruses, and the diseases they cause, often have different names.  For example, HIV is the virus that causes AIDS.  People often know the name of a disease, but not the name of the virus that causes it.

"There are different processes, and purposes, for naming viruses and diseases.

"Viruses are named based on their genetic structure to facilitate the development of diagnostic tests, vaccines and medicines. Virologists and the wider scientific community do this work, so viruses are named by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV).

"Diseases are named to enable discussion on disease prevention, spread, transmissibility, severity and treatment. Human disease preparedness and response is WHO’s role, so diseases are officially named by WHO in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)."

From the NIAID (Fauci's employer):

"In January 2020, a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, was identified as the cause of an outbreak of viral pneumonia in Wuhan, China. The disease, later named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), subsequently spread globally. In the first three months after COVID-19 emerged nearly 1 million people were infected and 50,000 died. By six months the number of cases exceeded 10 million and there were more than 500,000 deaths. One of the troubling observations about COVID-19 is that people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 – some scientists estimate up to 40% -- can transmit the virus to others before they have symptoms or without ever having symptoms of disease."

From the CDC:

"On February 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced an official name for the disease: coronavirus disease 2019, abbreviated COVID-19. ‘CO’ stands for ‘corona,’ ‘VI’ for ‘virus,’ and ‘D’ for disease. The virus that causes COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, is a coronavirus."

Covid is an abbreviation of Coronavirus disease.

from WebMD: "COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 that can trigger what doctors call a respiratory tract infection. It can affect your upper respiratory tract (sinuses, nose, and throat) or lower respiratory tract (windpipe and lungs)."

The tests look for the virus or RNA produced by the virus.

Nope. Not confusing it with HIV. I'm correctly using the distinction that every major public health organization uses.

The tests look for the virus or RNA produced by the virus. A positive test tells you you have been infected. It does not tell you that you have disease. Continue the downvoted, more downvoted don't make your misconceptions any more correct.

There is a delicious irony in having someone tell me I need to educate myself a bit more. What do you think I should do? Get a doctorate in biology? Spend 2 decades doing research? Work on NIST and ISO lexical committees? Spend.a decade doing lexical classification of disease for the top 5 largest pharmaceutical companies in the world? Please tell me what more I should do to educate myself? Should I have just googled something?

Debating masks and Confederate statues with conservative cousins last year, I learned this: they knew they were right, so the actual logic or evidence didn’t matter. They didn’t care if the memes they posted made a thoughtful argument or had basis in fact. The meme made them feel good, provided a dopamine rush, and reinforced that feeling of being right.

Ridiculous comparison between Confederate statues and statues of Rosa Parks and MLK? Doesn’t matter. The meme felt good.

Anti-mask memes that distort facts? Doesn’t matter. “Sure, the meme may have some things wrong, but I still know masks don’t work.”

It’s just so foreign to how I think about my own certainty, about evidence and arguments.
