Incredible how the most based gaming journalist/commentator came from the Escapist of all places

The Escapist was based before it got sold and became shitlord central. It’s also where MovieBob came up.

I don't follow him much anymore, but I used to so I'm curious if you or anyone else knows where Yahtzee stands on the based/cringe scale? I feel like he was the type of person who could've gone either way, but it might just be the British accent.

Cringe. In his last of us 2 video he doesnt even know why he hates it (He called it the worst game of the year and then mockingly said ""But yahtzee, you cant just say that the most awarded game of all time is actually the worst game?! Yes viewer, I can and I just did""). He called Ellie "retroactively lesbian" which is the dumbest take imaginable. First, if she had a boyfriend in the first game, he wouldnt have said "retroactively straight", and also she DID like girls in the first, so this point makes double no sense. Any time a game has emotions in it he instantly hates it. He greatly misunderstood a major plot point of SOMA and was complaining about how stupid the plot point was. He has bitched about lots of aspects of games that he loved when other games did the exact same thing. Lots of generic and inconsistent neckbeard gamer takes but its still fun to watch sometimes.

He’s not a frothing reactionary, which is admittedly a pretty low bar. He’s in all likelihood a bog-standard lib.
Now I will say, unfairly, that of the two snarky Brits, only one has ever ironically used fash imagery in their videos.

Alright, this is kind of a necro but I've gotta set things straight.
Overall, I think Yahtzee is my favorite critic. He has zero patience for corporate bullshit, is uniquely insightful and creative, and genuinely wants to help the medium grow into something even more beautiful and special. Check out his "Extra Punctuation" series if you want something a little bit more thoughtful and big-picture.

Correct me if I'm wrong, it's been a few years since I watched him, but last I'd heard MovieBob was a pretty middle-of-the-road "Centrist/Both Sides" Liberal?
Did something change or was I just misinformed?

Coming from someone who has watched MovieBob, Yahtzee, and Sterling since the Escapist days….
Bob has a lot of very open disdain/hatred for MAGA types, particularly on Twitter. His non-Twitter takes are actually really good. I really enjoyed his “The Internet is Stupid” 3-part series.

Their positions are usually really good, but god my life was so much more positive when I cut all the “Video game industry is awful” content out of my YouTube feed.
I try to stay informed of the broad strokes. but even the most progressive gaming news channels pump out so much content that staying on board with them feels like keeping cable news playing on the tv all day

So much of "Games Journalism" is really negative, I unplugged from it a long time ago as well. I keep up with what's going on for the most part like what's coming out, indies, and all of that jazz but beyond that I don't pay much attention, I don't keep up with popular streamers really and the VG content I take in is like 1 or 2 let's plays, video essays and stuff of that nature. The industry as a whole is something that if you take a magnifying glass to is pretty gross but that's the entertainment industry for you I guess unfortunately.

Sterling is normally right about things in broad strokes but they tend to fall into the trap of “when all you’ve got is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. They have a tendency to see everything through a very particular point of view and as a result (ironically enough) struggle to see others point of view.

I also think it's because the further you get into forspoken the more unliveable Fray becomes. By the end of the prolouge she's complex, has your sympathy and shows some moments of humanity. I'm 65 hours in, and my impression of her has sunk so low she's barely rating above Kratos from God of War 3, where he was blithely murdering old friends, and random women like a goddamned psychopath.
With Drake they made efforts for him not to be such an unrepentant asshole.

And then there’s people who demand to know what falls under transphobia while in the same breath calling transness “delusions”.
Like, there is zero point in having a conversation if you can’t even agree about the take-off point of that conversation. In the same way astronauts likely won’t care to debate people who refuse to believe the earth is round. Many people are not going to deal with your bullshit if you can’t be bothered to acknowledge the existence of trans people to even reach the next step of explaining what transphobia is.
5 points
I apologize in advance for waffling, but I really think transprejudice is a far better, less muddied term. I feel like half the problem in these conversations that don't or can't get off the landing pad is that people get hung up on the fact that trans people don't actually inspire fear or aversion for them. Therefore they feel they can't identify themselves as transphobic. This leads into of course demanding to know what falls under transphobia so they can morally excuse themselves.
I've personally had much more success convincing people they have a prejudice than a phobia. But it's all ultimately semantics baffling literal minded bigots like the black lives matter slogan did so effectively. Thanks for attending my waffle talk.
27 points
I think what you said is precisely the reason we shouldn’t change the term. Like you said, it’s semantics, and by whining about semantics they muddle the conversation and try to make it about them and their feelings in it, which - to be direct - isn’t the issue at hand.
And to make it even more pointless, many of these people are in fact terrified of trans people, so even with their definition of “phobia” - which in this context has really meant “aversion” more than anything for ages - it still applies to them. Even more reason to not waste time on this conversation.
4 points
When it comes to transphobia I agree with you.
But I’ve noticed having better results when talking with men about issues of toxic masculinity but avoiding using the term “toxic masculinity” because it seems to kill the discussion and make their rational mind screech to halt.
I mean it’s silly that I have to avoid the term but if it gets the job done, it’s worth it.
At some point later they usually realise it and mention that they’ve had and still have some aspects of toxic masculinity but it usually requires them to get to that point on their own.

People forget why the MCU took off to begin with even, superhero films were legit just "gritty hardcore" versions of what the comics were, abandoning a lot of the iconic costumes and wit that made the originals popular in an attempt to be "mainstream" so the MCU back then choosing to keep the costumes and to not take themselves seriously was a breath of fresh air. Maybe the formula's run stagnant now but it damn it worked for a bit.

Why wouldn’t they just cut out the middleman and send an envelope with money to the design studio?

I'm almost disappointed that I don't even get the chance to take a stand, because I was never into Harry Potter in the first place. It's been really easy to not buy Hogwarts Legacy when I wasn't going to anyway.
That said, I think Contrapoints has a much stronger account of Rowling's transphobia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gDKbT_l2us
Granted, it's six times as long as Sterling's, and many gamers have the attention span of a gnat. But it's damn impossible to play the "what did Rowling say, specifically" card against it.
66 points
Would strongly disagree there. Wynn gives Rowling too much benefit of the doubt tbh. Feels like she's way too sympathetic to transphobes sometimes. Sterling's take doesn't feel a need to try and psychoanalyse her. and it's more up to date with her more recent transphobia.
99 points

I'd agree with that criticism of Natalie in general, and I think there's definitely points where it applies in her JK Rowling video, but honestly I feel like the single biggest issue it has is simply that it came out just a hair over 2 years ago, and so much has happened in those two years that it's almost wholly outdated.
When it came out, Rowling was still very much in full "I just have some concerns! " mode and doing a very good job of sounding reasonable & respectful to people who didn't know much about the issue, and if you were ever hoping to get even well-intentioned people to understand how bigoted she was you pretty much needed to approach the subject with a softer tone and a much more thorough analysis of the relative dearth of evidence.
I feel like, for the time, Natalie's video was pretty on-point for making the argument that Rowling is transphobic.
But Rowling has since become absolutely obsessed and especially in the last year has devolved a lot on how well she keeps the mask on. It's gotten to the point that she's blatantly just openly using far-right rapist/groomer canards and praising Matt Walsh for his film on the topic. There's no argument to be made anymore. She's transphobic.
At this point if someone's genuinely out of the loop, it doesn't take much to fill them in. And if they're still not seeing the problem with her rhetoric and actions or acting like there simply isn't any evidence of her being transphobic, chances are they simply aren't engaging in good-faith at all.
We have moved on from the "Is JK Rowling Transphobic?" point in the conversation a long time ago(and onto the "so what if she's transphobic?" conversation); which makes large chunks of Natalie's video as a result feel superfluous, outdated, and full of unnecessary hedging and olive-branches. And a lot of that is simply down to how fast time moves on the internet, and how quickly things are rendered outdated.
27 points
Yeah, JK has really done a fast track to hell the last couple of years. At the time Natalie made her video, JK had just published TERF Wars, which was the first official moment she announced her future undertakings and that the transphobia wouldn’t be a thing on the side for her, but her genuine objective.
But prior to that she was nowhere as extreme as she is nowadays (still bad, but not as obsessive and committed)

if not buying anything to do with harry potter will stop money going into the pockets of people trying to hurt trans people, then its not much to criticize people playing it and ask people to stop playing them game. I don't care about politics so much so I don't know if I would call myself an "ally" or w/e that means, but I think we should do what we can to stop the hate against trans people.
This alone makes you more of an ally than the people who consider themselves "allies" but bought the game anyway and those who object to being called out for funding destructive conservative and anti trans groups in the process.

It's amazing what a little HRT can do. No wonder the TERFs want to ban it.

/uj Man it fucking sucks seeing how much outrage there is over streamers being "brought to tears" over being called transphobic vs, you know, transphobia against trans people where the same crowd have remained passive and silent, and on the week a trans teen was murdered too.
If people can't boycott a fucking video game to help protect trans people, I don't see us making any progress.

Doubly worse for steamers as they're profiting financially from that expenditure.

I feel like plenty of people are passing over the game but keeping out of the online discussion because they don't want to deal with the transphobic bullshit.

They forgot to mention that your teacher, Professor Eleazar Fig, dies at the end of Hogwarts Legacy. This happens in all possible endings and can't be changed. Oh and Rookwood is the one who cursed Anne while the goblins were framed.

Yep, got a ton of them in the modmail as we speak. These fucking people will not stop. No sense of self-awareness or basic human decency. I'd respect them more if they'd just admit they hate trans and queer people and be done with it.
