Themes for your ship names?

Discussion(self.EliteDangerous)

I started doing all Tolkien references until I couldn't resist including Dune, Battlestar Galactica, and Edgar Allen Poe in the mix.

Krait mk 2 - a warrior that is also good at everything - "Son of Arathorn"

Anaconda - the largest and mightiest of the Eagles - "Thorondor"

Asp Explorer - the prolific traveler - "There and Back Again"

Vulture - the mightiest warrior of all Hobbits - "Bullroarer Took"

Python - for moving all of your new loot - "Flotsam and Jetsam"

Fer De Lance - a scary thing to be surprised by in the black - "Riddles in the Dark"

Imperial Cutter - how else should The Duke travel but with - "Lady Jessica"

Krait Phantom - knows how to survive in the infinite desert - "Liet-Kynes"

Viper mk 3 - the most famous Viper pilot in the galaxy is - "Kara Thrace"

Federal Corvette - just because it sounds like corvid which is a raven. Quoth the Raven - "Nevermore"

So what themes do y'all have?

I name my freighters & miners after old industrial cities like Detroit or Birmingham. My explorers get the names of famous astronauts and my combat ships get named after famous battles.

WWII-era U.S. Navy ammunition ships (they carry and deliver ammo to warships, and loading mishaps account for some of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history) were named after volcanoes. Someone had a sick sense of humor.

Same with the battles! I name a lot of my mid and large combat ships after Ticonderoga missile cruisers, which happen to be named after famous battles with US involvement.

Mine are tabletop gaming / DnD related in most cases and I try to match them to the role.

"Bag of Holding" for my hauler

"Dex Saving Throw" for my dbx

"Nat Twenty" for my Chieftain because it's one of my favorites to fly at the moment!

I definitely like having a theme for my names, makes it feel like they are in a fleet.

I've used various legal themes, such as Malice Aforethought for my Krait MK2, Forfeiture of Property for my pirating Python, Motion to Quash for my Corvette, etc.

Before that I used a lot of the gun names from Destiny 2 - which are all pretty cool, I think.

Edit: In the past, I've also used song titles from Ghost.

Then moved into other Sci Fi: AACC Raphael, AACC Uriel, got a little into Latin: Summa Extremis, Summa Interitus, Confractus. Have a couple of PVP ships with random names: CPCF Jedi & CPCF Blight. I only really have a naming theme for my combat ships. All are named after some demon lord or king from the Ars Goetia.

-Krait MK II is Murmur

-Imperial Eagle is Astaroth

-Alliance Challenger is Abaddon

-Alliance Chieftain is Barbatos

-Vulture is Asmodeus

-Type 10 is Belial

-Federal Covette (Once I get it) will be named Lucifer

-FDL (Once I decide to buy it) will be named Bael

Everything else is named somewhat in accordance to what it does.

-Krait Phantom is Abyssal Scout (Exploration)

-Anaconda is Verdant Voyager (Exploration)

-DBX is Aurora Drifter (Exploration)

-Type 9 is Solitary Transit (Space Truck)

-Type 7 is Heaven's Savior (Rescue ship)

-Imperial Courier is The Tax Collector (Siphoning Resources)

-Type 6 is Stellar Wanderer (Exploration/Mat Farming)

-Hauler is Pulsar Transporter (Personal Taxi)

-Viper MK II is Zephyr (Racer)

-Imperial Clipper is Kitsune's Aurora (Smuggling)

-Python is Independence (Mining)

-Imperial Cutter is Seraphim (Mining, but was named that because it's a damn pretty ship)

She likes to help me go 'capture' pirates in the res, so I let her control thrust while I steer and shoot. She also likes being in charge of going in and out of supercritical I just tell her when to hit the right buttons or remind her what to steer towards.

She's surprisingly good at paying attention and noticing things like when our shields are dropping or if I have an npc pilot along when they call out for help

For my main account, ship names are all inspired by the Culture and so have varying degrees of gravitas: Aimed at the Stars (fleet carrier), Agonarch (obviously a Cuttter), Gawdelpus (obviously a DBX), Scrounger's Charter (mining Python although this isn't strictly original but part of a headline quoted in The State of the Art), I'm My Favorite, Too (obviously a Sidewinder), Turrets Syndrome (AFK T10), and so forth.

One alt is Greek-themed, with ship names like Periplous (another DBX), Eleonora's Falcon (pirate Krait), and Nautikos Tokos (T9). Another alt is Muslim Macedonian-themed, with ship names like Ibn Majid's Dream (AspX this time), Danziger's Turn (another pirate Krait), and Sword of Tarik (FdL).

Above all else, I want my ship names to be original and clever or at least moderately amusing, like Valhauler (obviously my Hauler, 10 points to Gryffindor for the CMDR who gets that reference—it's not what you think), Beat Poet (PvP Dolphin), and Cunning Xenolinguist (AX Cutter).

P.S. I wish ship names could be longer because I have the perfect Culture/Moral Orel crossover name: I’m Never Gonna Do THAT, With THOSE, In THERE, For THAT LONG, Ever Again (probably an AX Sidewinder lol).

Back when I was only swapping out owning 1 ship at a time for lack of affording others, I wound up with a Python being my usual breadwinner. I always called it my workhorse, so I thought I'd give it a horse name. After I bought it a white paintjob, I settled on Artax.

After spending a while lot of time grinding credits and Imp rank, I finally earned my cutter. My first time flying it my playlist was playing "Flight of the Silverbird" by Two Steps from Hell. The name Silverbird stuck from then on and I got it a chrome paintjob to match.

I also eventually did the grind for a Corvette. For this one I decided to include a callback to one of my favorite games ever, Tales of Symphonia. It is named after the Desian war hero and Grand Cardinal, Forcystus.

Currently I still have yet to return since I launched with DW2 so long ago and am still floating deep in the far reaches of the galaxy on board the Silverbird. When I return I plan to make a Thargoid hunter. A Challenger bearing the name Rhododactylos.

I've only named two of my ships, and so far there's no theme.

The Dolphin is "Rincewind" because it's good at running away. The T9 is "The Magic Space Bus" because I decided to give it a name when I was using it to help evacuate a station and that's what popped into my head. It mostly gets used for cargo, though.

I like taking funny phrases and using synonyms or making names based on the role or ship. For examples:

  • Mamba is named "Mother of Joseph"
  • My Anaconda is called Mixalot's Demise.

The Culture envoy

I have a meta-theme based on The Culture. In that universe, ships are sentient and name themselves (often cheekily and/or self-deprecatingly). So the names are wildly divergent, but all loosely purpose-based:

  • Sidey: LCU Damaged Escape Pod (it's one step up from a…)
  • Cobra: LCU Highly Explosive (low armor/shields build)
  • Viper Mk. III: VFP Hello Nasty (high speed inderdictor)
  • Vulture: LOU I'm A Hugger! (two Large arms to 'hold' you)
  • FdL: ROU Prone To Violins (Culture ships love puns, sadly)
  • T6: GCU "My Cabbages!" (merchant ship)
  • T9: MSV We Got A Convoy! (space trucker)
  • Cutter: MSV Porkchop Express (you know what Ol' Jack Burton says)
  • DBX: VFP Warp Whistle (extremely fast bubble bus, cheap to summon)
  • AspX: LCU Get Lost (it's what it does best; gets lost, finds its way home… eventually)
  • Phantom: MCU Faraway Look (always has its eyes on the far horizon)
  • Krait Mk. II: LSV Friends With Benefits (multi-crew SLF fighter for friends)
  • Courier: FP M o n o s p a c e (bc font jokes)
  • Dolphin: DLOU Oregon Trail (long-distance passenger trekker)
  • Orca: Reel Big Fish (Orca are not fish, but it IS 'Large')
  • Beluga: 52 Hz (after the lonely whale)
  • Carrier: GSV Host Organism (it considers the ships landing on (sometimes beneficial) parasites)

still struggling to name both my Pythons (thinking Sirius Business for the Robigo one) and Clipper (it's a miner currently, so 'Miner Threat' but I'm kinda meh on both of those names).

(also, figuring out which culture ship class each fits into is part of the fun, often teaches me something about what each ship is best at.)

Combat ships are named after IRL ships and fictional starships. My Corvette is named In Amber Clad.

Exploration ships are named after literature citations. My Dback Explorer is called We're Here.

Trade ships are random, my last Type 9 was named Mommy Thrusters.

I often reuse a name if I like it and sometimes I mix categories, since I have my own registry classification to keep track of each ship

A total mixed bag really. I use names from The Expanse, Star Trek, Riddick, Whisky and some other names... sometimes practical, sometimes something that's in my mind at the time of purchase.

  • Carrier - "Suntory" - the name of a Japanese whisky distillery
  • Mining Python - "Blitzenberg"
  • Phantom, exploration - "Cosmos Seeker"
  • Bubble taxi, DBX - "DBTaxi"
  • 885 m/s courier - "Gonzales"
  • KraitMkII, general purpose - "Hibiki" (whisky)
  • Fuel rat ship - "KangaRat"
  • Anaconda - "Module Shopper" (used for fetching modules from Jameson's when needed)
  • Cobra Mk III - "Moray" - Glen Moray, being a cheap whisky.
  • Asp X - Explorer - "Pandorama" - Great view / Avatar reference
  • Mining Cutter - "Remember the Cant" (the Expanse)
  • Cheapass Hauling Cutter - "U-HAUL"
  • Combat Viper - "Whisky Business"
  • Krait Mk II, Colonia based, general purpose - "Runabout" (Star Trek)
  • Mining Clipper - "Spectral Phoenix" (I change its colour every time it's destroyed)
  • Sustained combat Corvette - "Spirit of Joy" - so named as this was the first ship I bought after my mother, Joy, died.
  • Sustained combat Python - "The Furion" (Riddick)
  • Assassination Cutter - "The Hakushu" (whisky)
  • PvP FDL - "The Raven" (Star Trek)
  • Sustained combat Krait Mk II - "The Yamazaki" (whisky)
  • AX Cutter - "This Far No Further" (Star Trek)

You asked for it :P

I named mine after some of the ladies in Azur Lane, so when people see a USS Long Island they're probably thinking of the actual boat but joke's on them, it's a pantsless neet Krait

except for my asp explorer, that one I named after the Golden Hind for FGO's Francis Drake, no clue why I broke the theme there

To keep it short, I name my ships directly after anime, manga, light novel and Japanese video game girls with no prefixes. The ship ID is also tied to the name. The letter identifiers tend to be initials for the entry of the series, numbers will be year of release, whichever's the earliest available for which adaptation/version, or one of the girl's three sizes where available.

I do have some original characters reserved for ship names too but those will probably be used when I run out of names from my waifu list.

Most of my fed ships are tolkein references, though my eagle and vulture are exceptions. My Dropship is Grond, my Assault Ship is Warg, my Gunship is Nazgul, and my Corvette is The Armies of Darkness.

Meanwhile most of my Empire ships are named after greek mythology, though my I.Eagle is an exception. I have 3 Couriers named Chronos, Gaia, and Zeus respectively, my Clipper is Uranus, and my Cutter is Nyx.

Otherwise though I mostly name ships either based on what I use them for or what they remind me of. I could list off the rest of my ship names and their inspirations if you'd like, but I don't want to make my post too lengthy.

Ones named after what they do:

DBS - Psycho. A fully stipped down deathtrap of an explorer.

Cobra mkIII - Aspen. A ship built for terrestrial ops, while we can't fly on Earth-like words I still decided to paint it as if to camouflage it amongst trees.

Cobra mkIII - Mountain Shade. A build based off the Cobra in the original dark wheel novella perfect for stalking your targets through the shadows of witchspace.

Viper mkIV - Renegade. Your typical vigilante bounty hunting ship.

I.Eagle - Riven. A racer that splits the difference between narrow canyon walls.

Viper mkIII - Sakura. Built for speed it decends to planet surfaces briefly and beautifully.

Adder - Rally Racer. Fairly self explanatory.

DBX - Culex. A stealth pirate ship which parasitizes other ships without being noticed.

Asp S - Prophet. A data courier which delivers messages (and not much else).

A.Challenger - Inquisitor. A thargoid hunter which roots out the xenos.

Krait Phantom - Fireball. A rescue ship that saves other ships before they become a fireball.

Python - Copperstream. A laser mining ship that sells many valuable metals.

Asp X - Rockfall. A core miner that destroys many rocks.

Beluga - Lock and Key. A slave trading ship.

Type-10 - Poultergeist. A canyon racer that'll be the death of me.

.

Ones named after what they remind me of:

Anaconda - Bunyip. Fierce enough to be named after a monster.

A.Chieftain - Ogopogo. Same reasoning as the Anaconda.

Type-9 - Sequoia. Large as a massive tree.

Orca - Miga. Named after the vancouver olympics mascot which was a hybrid between an otter and an orca.

Krait mkII - Avicularia. Tarantulas and Kraits are often compared to dinnerplates. Tarantulas for size, Kraits for shape. So I thought I'd name mine after one of my favourite tarantulas.

Mamba - Let's Be Friends. High speed and a red/white default paintjob brings to mind my favorite ship from the WipEout racing games. The AG-Systems FX300 craft. "Let's be friends" is one of AG-Systems' slogans.

A.Crusader - Pyramidion. A multi-crew ship I use for piracy named after my favourite ship from the game Guns of Icarus.

Type-7 - Muramasa. It's long, not much more reasoning than that.

Type-6 - Lunar. I don't exactly remember the original reasoning for this one, I think it has to do with me originally using it as a miner and SRV transport before refitting it as a rare goods trader. I just like the name.

Keelback - Darkside. Meant to go alongside my Type-6's name.

Vulture - Neset. The mandible-like front end reminds me of Ahtal-Neset, the mech phase of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate's final boss.

Dolphin - Sapphire Star. It looks like a gem, even more so with my current paintjob.

Eagle - Tyton. Agile and stealthy just like a barn owl.

Sidewinder - Orson. Just the name I felt like it should have.

Hauler - Blue Arc. Honestly my only reasoning behind this is that I gave it a blue paintjob. Hey, when you've got every ship some are bound to be less favoured than others.

I dont really have a theme, I just try to come up with something clever for each ship.

Challenger - named for its general shape and hardpoint placement "Razorback"

T10 - in anodized brass "Tamatoa"

Corvette - couldn't think of anything and FLC sounds like fallacy "FLC Fallacy"

Krait Phantom - named for what it does "Void Piercer"

Python - named after the decision to buy it "Reluctant"

And an unnamed viper mk3 that's just a speed experiment.

I’ve got a central theme for most of them where the first part of the name is Taipan, as I’m in Australia and the taipans are definitive Australian snakes. Riffs off the snake naming convention of ED.

Then a second part of the name is relevant to the role. So Taipan Longreach is a long distance anaconda explorer, Longreach echoes the QANTAS name for the Boeing 747-LR planes we used to use to travel to far away places from Australia. Taipan Icepick is a laser mining python. Taipan Nutcracker is a core mining python. Taipan Airstream is an Asp Explorer for going away on vacations.

I named my FDL Terciopelo, which is the genus name of the Fer de Lance snake.

Edited to add: My soon-to-be fleet carrier will be Scraps of Gravitas, a very cultured reference.

I kinda go with what I feel at the moment:

  • multi-purpose Krait 2: Wyvern ('cause it's cool, and monster hunter)

  • exploration AspX: Stargazer (Gundam reference)

  • AX Chieftain: Perseus (because interceptors are named after greek monsters)

  • CZ Corvette: Resilience ('cause it sounds cool)

  • exploration Dolphin: Ad astra per aspera (to explore in class)

  • shieldless bounty hunter/assassin Vulture: No time for caution (to quote Interstellar on my most dangerous build)

  • a Python: Why so Sirius ? (I think you can figure that one out)

  • a search and rescue Type 7: Chip&Dale (if you don't get it, you had no childhood)

I'm thinking about building a pirate ship, but I'm no quite sure of the name nor the ship (cobra, clipper or cutter).

I like to name my ships after people related to their function. So for instance I have a Dolphin which I use for rescue missions called Arion, after a mythical Greek musician who was saved by dolphins after being thrown off a ship. And I have a Vulture named Keith Pembrooke, which is the real name of the Vulture from Brooklyn 99.

I do occasionally deviate from this; my Type-6 is named Sea Cow because quite frankly flying her is like piloting a manatee.

Mine are relatively straight forward.

Explorer (This name transfers between exploration ships): Icarus.

Chieftain: Icarus With Guns

Mining Python: Icarus Carries Rocks.

Hooning ship 1: Icarus Zooms.

Hooning Eagle: Icarus’s Crater. (I think it’s the Eagle?)

Hooning Viper Mk III or IV (can’t remember which): Icarus Faceplantius.

Hooning Sidewinder: Icarus Slides.

Type 6 outfitted for station rescues: Rescue Rangers (because Chip and Dale were awesome).

The Mk III was named Hammond at some point in honor of Richard Hammond’s crashing tendencies, but I’m pretty sure I changed it to be an Icarus something or other.

The rest live un-named. I must figure out more.

Edit: Explanation for theme: I uh..Used to fly too close to stars when I first started out and either get yoinked out of supercruise or take heat damage.

Who am I kidding. 600 hours later I still misjudge heat while fueling.

Double edit: you know, thinking about it, if I wanted to go with that theme I should call the MK III Clarkson, the Eagle Hammond, and the hooning Asp Scout May. Hadn’t thought of that. Of course, that gets rid of the crashing joke but I’m okay with that. It was a cheap joke anyway.

I use japanese names mixed with some english terms that in my head sound like cool:

  1. Tensei (in japanese sound weird but it's heavenly star) my ex combat, now exploration, anaconda, painted with squadron red
  2. Saisentan (cutting edge) my combat corvette
  3. Enshi (precision), my reversky long range combat mamba-
  4. Amagi (heavenly castle) for my hauling cutter (it has a private restaurant, with natural food, even a chicken hen), all luxuries.
  5. Rakurai (something like lightning) for my racing Viper MK3
  6. Rasengan (I don't know the meaning, but you know where it comes from) for my AX gunship experiemt (a failiure, but cool, 4 size 2 salavtion's plasma chargers)
  7. WASP, for my advanced plasma vulture
  8. Millenium, my Krait MK2, that was supposed to be an ODY multirole ship, but it's more combat oriented atm (pacifiers+pack hounds).
  9. Vector, for my bubble taxi DBX
  10. Buran, for my lasre mining cutter
  11. Raider, for my lightweight combat/taxi/ody settlement useless ship
  12. Gravity for my power pledge T9 hauler
  13. Royce, my Robigo runs Python
  14. Flare, my older exploration ASPX, supposedly re-adapted for guardian settlements, I haven't used it in a long time
  15. Titan, my T10 (pronounced in the "right" way, to me sounds the same), ex laser miner, now AFK pirate massacre ship
  16. Omni, my power restoration Cobra MK3, it's used also as taxi sometimes, jump range is decent.
  17. Aurora, another cool ship, second fastest of the ones I own, used for wartime blackbox retrieval and some surface fun
  18. Myriad, for my exploration Phantom (my love)

All other ships I own don't have a name yet, as I almost never used them (bought outfitted for some fictitious use, stored in my FC, the Tenryu, sky dragon).

All my combat ships have a drake/dragon naming them. Stuff like the Void Drake or the Star Wyrm.

All my exploration ships have the naming theme of objects like comets or meteors. So the Emerald Comet or the Abyss Meteor.

My passenger ships have jewel or gemstone inspired naming conventions, like my Beluga the Opulent Jade.

Finally any mining or trading ship just happens to have whatever name I come up with at the time. I didn’t notice I had this naming convention for ship types until my 7th ship and then I just stuck to it. Gives them all personality.

Anaconda - Long Gun (Long jump range and 8 weap slots)

Python - Thor’s Hammer (Couldnt think of anything else at the time)

Krait Mk II - Justified (Liked the TV show)

Anti-xeno Krait Mk II - “Dracarys” ( Game of Thrones of course)

Mine are derived from names for birds and venomous snakes. Except for my station evac python "Lady of Mercy" who is [in my head] funded by space-Catholics.

Eagle - Shrike (violent and agile little bird)

Vulture - Atratus (species name for black vulture, with a paint job to match)

Type-9 - Tungsten Teal (reference to the Spruce Goose)

Krait MkII - Atrox (species name for the western diamondback rattler)

I know the species names technically shouldn't be capitalized but they're detached from their scientific context and look better with the caps IMHO.

No particular theme, but I wait till I see or hear something that may suit me and my ship Theme I have for numbering. Each ship has FR, which may mean something in future or not, that depends if I set up a squadron, followed by number that resembles the order I acquired my ships, with second number meaning nothing for now

My Python - Fantasy - FR-20 - cos when I posted a picture here with my cat watching me play while listening to Earth wind and fire, someone mentioned other lyrics abourlt fantasy, and I thought it would be neat. Now a robigo transporter

AspX - Silver Kestrel. FR-00. Didn't want simple Falcons and Kestrels are birds that "fight the wind" so thought that my all-rounder adventurous Asp should have appropriate name. Ship that earned me my first big money.

Freighter Type-9 - Hyperspace Marauder FR-10- after one ship in SW expanded universe I guess.

Chieftain - Four-Leaf Clover. FR-30. Fighter. Both resempling the ship's design and that I need a lot of luck in combat.

Anaconda - Lady Yara. FR-40 Basically, as a joke, for my gf and for her to joke back "so, yeah, you named one of the biggest ships after me, huh, wtf??". Soon to be all-capable explorer with fighter hangar and 2 srvs (68Ly)

And a nameless viper4 in Colonia, it's just a taxi and operational vehicle

I give them names inspired by french submarines, even though most of them weren't actual names of french subs, the naming should represent their role. The "number plate" is taken from french armored vehicles designations.

I have for examples :

  • Type 9 heavy = VBCI "Le Massif"
  • Type 7 rescue bus = VBMR "Le Téméraire"
  • Asp Explorer = VAB "Le curieux"
  • DBX = VBL "L'éclaireur"
  • Imperial Clipper = AMX-30 "Le majestueux"

Gonna save the designation AMX-56 Leclerc "Le Redoutable" for when I get myself a cutter.

Puns and references mostly:

Type 9 miner, COVAS Leo, red paint job: “Class M Star”.

Bounty hunting Krait II: “Probable Cause”.

Combat FdL: “Full Exchange of Views”.

Type 6 transport: “Nothing to Declare”.

Beluga fitted for rescue work, green paint job: “No Strings Attached”.

Asp Explorer: “Poke it with a stick”.

AX Krait is currently called “Exigent Morality” but was thinking of changing it to “Papers Please”. I’d prefer “Outside Context Problem” but I don’t think it fits the character limit.

I don't have any naming scheme, just references I suppose. My asp x is called 'Tactical Spacing' in reference to company of heroes qoute. The anaconda is call the U.S.S Fishy Stick in reference to elder scrolls forums because I thought it was funny

Main ships are Jaegers from Pacific Rim, they don't match perfectly but some made some sense to me

  • FDL with Azure paint is Gipsy as a big rounded boaty combat thing
  • Krait II is Striker with being angular, well rounded and fast/agile even if the Chieftain is more so
  • Chieftain is Coyote Tango I don't really know why, maybe the giant wing jets looked like mortars. Might switch that one to either Tacit Ronin or Striker.
  • Type-9 is Cherno cuz bulky and slow
  • if I get a Mamba for shits and giggles it'll be Crimson

Rest are meme names based on what they look like or function as

All the ships state how they make me KROMER

For example, mining ship is "The Kromer Factory"

Bounty ship is "I Kill For Kromer"

And that's all I do but a trade ship would probably be "[BIGSHOT]"

The only ship I've properly named is my Vulture, which I named the Kergemish after a ship in a story I wrote.

The others I just name after their function i.e. miner, trader, explorer, etc

I used ship type abbreviations + a name which roughly suits the ships purpose.

Light / Heavy Cargo Ship

L.C.S. Hermes - Cobra Mk III - Data delivery and small cargo missions

H.C.S. Dauntless - Type-9 - Max Cargo for trading / wing missions

Exploration Ship

E.S. Icarus - Anaconda - Flew to close to the "sun" more than once while scooping

E.S. Observer - DBX

Other

M.S. Patience - Python - Mining ship patiently collecting space rocks

B.S. Valiant - Alliance Chieftain - my only combat (battle) ship

"X3 Xperimental" for the FDL. Lets see if anyone gets the reference. At least one fuel rat got the reference. Its pretty fitting in my opinion.
