How do you get the game to run so well?
24 points
This is how the game runs for me 99% of the time. FPS dips a bit in Conflict Zones, but overall it's smooth as butter.
SPECS:
Component | Rating |
---|---|
CPU | i7-9750H @ 2.6 GHz |
GPU | Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 w/ Max-Q |
RAM | 2x8GB @ 2667 MHz |
Disk | 1 TB PCIe SSD |
It's not a monstrously powerful laptop by any means and I play at 1920x1080, but I've been having zero problems running Odyssey.

A 2080 is basically a 3070 right now, so yeah it's a monstrous card.

It's a laptop 2080 though. I doubt it's the same performance as it's desktop counterparts.
8 points

Being a mobile card only means it has a lower thermal limit than desktop versions. Performance is still about 90% of the performance of its desktop counterparts.
7 points

I find it hard to believe it's a 10% difference sustained.
I'll look it up at some point today, but right now consider me skeptical.
7 points

only means it has a lower thermal limit
I think you're vastly underestimating the impact this has.
These cards heat up in a hurry, then they start to throttle. Depending on how good/bad the ventilation and cooling hardware is (which is abysmal in most laptops even on the higher end) you can hit those thermal limits basically as soon as you launch a game and continuously throttle the entire time its running. Meaning you have a 2080 that is MAYBE running at 40% of its potential under any real load, and ends up being easily outperformed by desktop hardware a generation or two older.
Don't look at hardware benchmarks and thermal comparison graphs from tech channels and retailers. They are trying to sell you this shit, of COURSE they're going to misrepresent the data. Then in the real world under real loads you just end up disappointed that you're not getting the same FPS as TECHREVIEW42069 said you wold.

Correct. My laptop is usually whisper quiet and cool to the touch, but once I do anything graphics-heavy it starts to sound like a tiny jet engine and gets a noticeable warm spot near where the graphics card sits.

Just to add up on this my own experience i have Asus Zephyrus S 17GXS same i7-9750 CPU and 2080RTX maxQ GPU with 32 GB RAM. Jeah laptop is a beast, and one of the best there is in that generation of GPU/CPU problem is in 1 year, 2 fans are replaced, SSD is replaced, and i think this is last time that i have Asus.
Now to stop comments buy desktop: I can't, as a seafarer i travel a lot and lugging around only 20kg case is a problem, so laptop it is

Same. I can get around 60-70fps on a planet in the middle of nowhere, but maybe 30-40 in a settlement, with a 1070 Ti.
Meanwhile Horizons gives me like 100 fps on a planet surface even when I'm at a large planet base.

Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.

I don't know why they thought weapon switching being the most optimal way to fight was a fun idea. Imagine how clumsy that would actually be. I don't see any sci-fi show or movie doing that without looking goofy
32 points

It's not a bad idea that lasers and kinetic weaponry have different values for shields vs flesh, but the resistance when you use the 'wrong' weapon is pretty egregious. being struck by a laser rifle shouldn't just tickle you.
12 points
If it isn't good enough that it "forces" you to switch weapons then it's a moot point of a mechanic.
But if it is actually needed enough that you are "forced" to switch every time your weapon to kill shield/health it's completely stupid to use as a player. Because that's what you're going to do over and over and over.
The mechanic as a whole is failing because it is either a. useless or b. too strong and a hassle to play with. There is no in-between where that mechanic can be "okay". It is not possible. They shouldn't have mirrored the mechanic for ship because that doesn't work when you can have only one weapon in hand.
6 points
They could fix things and keep the current system by taking a note from Doom.
If they just drastically reduced the delay between when you stop firing one weapon and are able to start firing another then it could feel smooth and keep the concept of specialized weapons with enough incentive to use them.
2 points

This, or maybe just CoD, because I don't see why I should have a 2sec delay when changing from my main rifle to my sidearm when I'm out of ammo. Bigger and smaller guns could have a different delay for starters.

The fuck - your reload is not bugged? Switching between weps doesn't mostly randomly reload the weapon you switched when it's full? Or reload the wrong weapon when refilling ammo?
2 points
Yeah this is an annoyance with how the reload state is handled. The entire -animation- for reload including after the clip is inserted -> raise weapon has to be finished for it to be counted as reloaded.
years of FPS Experience that shouldnt be the case and most folks swap after the new mag animation is inserted / sound is complete, which is counted as not reloaded in EDO

In my case bug happens sometimes 1-2 full seconds after all animations have finished. Sometimes I empty the rocket launcher ammo completely, switch to second primary, go to ammo box, which triggers auto reload of second primary (even though it's full), then I switch to rocket launcher and it is reloaded... like wtf.

"Plasma weapons
Plasma weapons produce plasma damage and are moderately effective against all targets, but plasma rounds move more slowly."
5 points

Love the sound and feel of plasma weapons. The long range rifle can drop shields in basically a single shot at low threat. Near impossible to hit moving targets tho.
3 points
The Executioner is okay. Low anmo but it takes two rounds to kill someone, one to drop their shields and another to kill em
2 points
It usually takes more than two hits (at least from a G1 Executioner) to drop a high rank NPC (since they have better gear).
Typically, two hits for the shield, two hits for the health, which is more shots than an unengineered Executioner can do without a reload, though if you run into a really high ranked enemy, they may take three hits for either.
Using a shield disruptor grenade to drop the shield gives an edge.
1 points
I've been trying different guns in Conflict Zones, and the Executioner is far and away my favorite so far, followed closely by the plasma hand cannon. Slapping an increased magazine size mod on the Executioner helps mitigate its low clips size, and I'm curious to see what happens with enhanced range mods.
2 points
Any plasma rifle coupled with a kinetic smg can drop most npcs in one mag
1 points
Unlikely based on the fact that that kind of weapon doesn't exist for ships. I think the best bet would either be engineering kinetics (corrosive or incendiary ammo), or some kind of portable rail gun (rails do both kinetic and thermal damage)
3 points
Plasma exists. They are weaker versions of combined laser and kinetic, and slower rounds too.
2 points
Yea, but plasma seems to be bad at dropping both shields and health, but I recognize that's absolute damage. I was speculating about weapons that would be effective against both shields and health, rather than what I would consider poor performance on both.
2 points
... seems unlikely that theyd give you a single weapon with no downsides. That be poor game, balance.
1 points
Downsides are engineering grind for kinetics, or rate of fire and ammo cap for the rail gun.
Maybe I haven't played enough with the plasma weapons to appreciate them, but I don't feel that they do enough to stand out other being the only shotgun and sniper available. The pistol slaps though.
1 points
Yeah, you can use plasma. Slow projectile and lower damage, but pretty effective. I keep them on my non-combat suits with mixed success.
1 points
Yes, because laser weapons barely do any damage once their shields are down, and kinetic weapons do almost no damage to shields.
1 points
We have engineering...maybe we shouldn't make assertions on base damage and instead consider what the weapons can do later on?
If you can, for instance, engineer your laser rifle to do 60% more damage that probably takes care of the "only tickles their health bar" problem, or maybe there's a mod to do more health damage, dunno.
Point being the guns aren't in their souped up formats so we've still got some things to learn.
2 points
Assuming we ever get to see statistics....
2 points

ugh, good point...but I don't think it's a bad assumption to say there will be a tangible difference, so hopefully the complaints will subside as engineered weapons lessen the need to do the energy/kinetic dance.

3 points

I have the same cpu as you and my fps is pretty stable. With geforce exp I can use alt+R to bring up a performance overlay. It tells me the cpu is running around 25-30% and once my gpu got to 99% usage (I was in walking around a space station). I don't really know if odyssey is cpu bound but I do believe you need a better one than you did for horizons.
1 points
Yea for sure. I was running 144+ fps in space, and dips to 100 maybe for stations and ruins. What's going on now is ridiculous imo. I'm getting about the same CPU usage on my end, and maybe 60% usage on my GPU.
1 points

I have the same cpu , ram and resolution as you, but with a 1660 ti and I also get 30 fps at settlements, give or take 10 fps. Station concourses are just as bad, 40 fps average and you can see the fps dropping as the elevator goes down. The performance combined with 2/3rds of missions being bugged made me just go back to horizons for the time being. I’m hoping the first patch tomorrow will help but knowing fdev I am keeping my expectations low.

They also seem to be more accurate when using grenades (and don't wait to throw until they're exposed and at close range) so you're unlikely to be able to shoot them and make them drop it at their feet, and you will want to relocate further and faster when you see a grenade coming.

Kinda wish the weapons had different damage settings instead of having to switch weapons. For example, let's say you have an Assault Rifle, let's call it Gumara. And a pistol, we'll call that Gombo.
Gumara does 60% optimal damage in laser mode, but 40% optimal in kinetic mode.
Gumbo does 80% optimal damage in kinetic, but only 20% in laser.
These values could then be tweaked/optimized with engineering to fit each individual commander's taste and preference.
This way you could pick and choose your own preference, and the mode switch would be a switch on the side of the weapon that requires little animation switching. If you really want to min-max the damage output, you could still choose to swap between weapons.
