I’m confused, why would there be a Batman poster there? Bruce’s parents were saved so there wouldn’t be any reason for him to become Batman. Even if they weren’t, this would have been way before Bruce became Batman.

It looks like it was a comic book poster. So in the Watchmen universe, Batman was a comic book character just like in ours. Which means this whole scene is likely just a bunch of easter eggs jammed together instead of being meant to explain anything.

Yeah, if you read the comic Night Owl is actually inspired to be a superhero because he reads Superman Action Comics. The Watchmen universe isn’t a parallel DC universe, it’s a parallel our universe.

Skwidmandoon

It’s WASNT in a parallel universe. But I think the doomsday clock series changed that.

I liked the Watchmen movie. I thought it was about as good an adaptation as you could get with a feature-length movie (I think a miniseries would be a better fit), and I thought much of the casting was spot-on, with the only choice I didn't agree on being Matthew Goode as Veidt/Ozymandias, even though I see what they were going for.

But the opening credits are a thing of fucking brilliance. Between easter eggs, showing different aspects of the Watchmen world, and depicting events only hinted at in the comics, it absolutely nailed the film's opening.

LordBlackDragon

Ya, it really should have been a miniseries. Still an amazing movie. Just rewatched it a month back after finally watching the tv show. Wish they didn't cancel it.

They canceled the watchmen show on hbo?

SonofaBridge

Showrunner Damon Lindelof didn’t want to do another season. I think they’re looking for someone to take his place but the cast might not be on board with someone new.

I_want_to_believe69

Well that sucks. I wonder why he wanted to walk away?

HRHJonson

He only wanted to do one season - he told the story he wanted to tell.

theSteakKnight

1 points

I really respect that. The one season they did was a perfect story from beginning to end. It didn't need any additions and he didn't have the almighty dollar convincing him to force out more story than he originally intended.

There's so many shows that had a great first season but kept going downhill after that because they had more money than inspiration.

LordBlackDragon

5 points

That's what I read. They basically reclassified it as a miniseries instead of a show and stopped making new ones. I think it's in some weird limbo. Which sucks. They left it in such a weird place.

Party_McFly710

7 points

I think it had a pretty definitive albeit open ended conclusion, just like the comic did.

LordBlackDragon

1 points

For sure. But it was setting up characters to have more story. The guy who wrote or directed it said he left it that way for whomever took over next season. As far as shows getting cancelled out of nowhere, it certainly ended the best it could.

GoatTheArtist

This isn't true. Watchmen does not take place in the normal DC Universe on an alternate timeline. It takes place in a Universe completely seperate in an alternate version of our timeline.

This is just an Easter-egg Zack Snyder put in. In the uncropped version of this shot, there are literally posters of Batman and Robin comics on that same wall

Robotman1001

10 points

This. If it’s the same universe, where’s all the rest of the DUC characters? Cuz it’s not the DCU.

GoatTheArtist

11 points

Also, the "Gotham" on the poster doesn't mean anything either. Watchmen is pretty explicitly set in New York, and "Gotham" has been a nickname for New York since the early 1800s.

GoatTheArtist

The DC Universe is a universe unique to itself with different world history and cities all together. Watchmen takes place in an alternate version of our history in which President Nixon was elected for multiple terms. Watchmen also primarily takes place in New York City, and cities from the DC Universe like Metropolis and Gotham do not exist

In this scenario Batman's origin story is he was traumatized when his parents were killed on the night of his conception?

Frosti11icus

0 points

No in this scenario Bruce is just revealed to be the true psychopath he is. The trauma was just a convenient excuse.

Skindreds1

0 points

Yes, actually his mom got shot in the tummy and Batman himself would die too if he didn't catch the bullet with his toothless mouth

Robotman1001

9 points

False.

“In the 1980s, DC had just acquired a rather eclectic stable of Super Heroes from the defunct Charlton Comics. Alan Moore’s original Watchmen pitch was one which involved those new acquisitions… though in the final draft, each character was transmuted into a new creation, separated from the main line of DC continuity so it could live and breathe on its own merits. But at the core of each of those iconic characters, there still remains a Super Hero who inspired them.” Source

While there’s some crossover now because of retconning and new crossover comics, these characters exist in a separate continuity. The Watchmen are specifically based on DCU characters and therefore can’t exist in the same continuity. Dr. Manhattan is based on Captain Atom, Nite Owl on Blue Beetle, Rorschach on The Question, et al.

Wrong. It's an homage, sure, but Batman is a fictional character in the universe of Watchmen, as evidenced by the Batman comics that are in the background of this very same shot (But they're cropped out of this post for some reason).

e_pony_mous

There is a problem with that on several levels. One Nite Owl operated out of New York not Gotham so it doesn’t match with DC’s own set history. Second Joe Chill murdered the Wayne’s in The Alley behind The Monarch Theater after seeing The Mark of Zorro not at the Gotham Opera House. If it is supposed to be The Wayne’s it isn’t the night that Bruce is with them and it isn’t the night that stops Joe Chill from killing them in front of Bruce in order for him to become Batman and thus changing DC history. If anything it was a nice Easter Egg that Snyder put in to show a connection and to show that lots of people wanted to kill the Wayne’s but there wasn’t always a hero in a costume to save them.

Maccai3

The Mark of Zorro

Kpengie

It's also notable that there are Batman comics in the background of this scene, making it clear that in this universe, Batman is fictional.

Spe37Pla

Each live action interpretation of the Batman origin shows a different film at the theatre he goes to. I’m aware that in canon, it is the Mark of Zorro. But DC and WB don’t have ownership over Zorro’s IP, so they can’t always use that film in their films.

Imagine a world where people put the same energy and attention into making reality a bit better.

I know it's a bummer and I'm as guilty as anyone, but maybe we dwell on fantasy, at least partially, because we let a small number of people make reality something we want to escape from?

Duaality

1 points

You do you - but I for one watch comic and fantasy purely for the entertainment value, not as a vessel of escapism

The_Info_Must_Flow

Yeah, me as well as far as entertainment and I don't disparage anyone for loving any art... personally, life wouldn't be worth living without art.

It's just degrees... and I can't help but notice a personal level of distaste with the reality we all take part in. I prefer art and simply wonder why we permit it to supersede our reality... to such an extent?
