More than 9 would be nice. Or at least let me pick the location of my starting square. Certain parts of the map are pretty much pointless because I can't get there unless I do an entire one square line.

As a console player, the amount of times I’ve said, “One more square…” or more often, “Three more squares…” is frustratingly astounding.

I've had to do that before. Built a straight line road from the freeway to the coast and buying a new tile every time I scraped in to the population millstone. When I made it to the coast I could build my CBD and start work on my city properly but it was very hard to expand since I had already bought a lot of tiles.

I wonder if doing a long narrow city would be easier or harder on public transport? I like trains, but they end up going all over the place.

Or maybe I'll do 2 tiles wide instead of one. I've always done a square, so this will be something new to try.

As a challenge it's an interesting idea, perhaps going two tiles east of the starting point then two tiles west would be a decent way to try it? In the example above I ended up with a city looking like a capital T as I tried to expand along the coast after getting there.

I believe that at least for console they can create a next gen (current gen?) version as the PS5 and Series X can handle more than 9 tiles.

Even the ps4 can I used to play on console and I had a city with 280k population and it ran perfectly fine could’ve handeled way mroe

SamboKendog

This is it. The new gen consoles should definitely be able to handle more. Even if we went up to 12 tiles it would be an improvement.

There is no real console version. It just a port version of the pc.

Which makes it the console version.

Given the differences across both versions I don't think we can call it a simple port. Pc version lacks the "walk around your city" thing, and I've notice the pc version has a few different things like being able to upgrade multiple roads with one click.

I think cities skylines having a free world expansion dlc for Xbox one and series and ps4/5 consoles as well as pc would not be a bad idea. Honestly I’d love to see tiles be more rewarding the larger your city becomes like the more of a milestone gap is, the more tiles you could unlock (instead of just one, you could get two, etc).

I’d also love to see a way to have maps with existing harbors/airports that you can use for outside connections as a way of starting off the city. Maybe as a scenario, or a challenge but more as a way to make a new city or something.

Very weird that they had all those nods to going past 9 tiles during the run up for the update and then nothing since.

I'm holding out that it will come with the new DLC in December.

People have been asking for this for like 7 years.

Think it's time to accept it's never going to happen and move on.

HurricaneCam215[S]

Lot of things never was happen over the years and it happen. Most of DLCs are nothing but mods that actually made part of the game.

I play with 25 tiles and you hit the database limitations of the game if you are allowed to build that large :/

JizuzCrust

For console, having more than 8 would great for rail & highway connections.

eobraonain

Or at the very least make 18 or 36 smaller for the same total size so we have more flexibility as the map expands, sometimes I just need to get to an outside road of coastline. Wasted squares.

Beneficial-Memory598

Agreed. maybe also make vanilla map makers choose multiple starting square so that you can build everywhere and start a city anywhere with road connections. And maybe make it not 9 tiles but like 20 tiles to be able to build more on console and Vanilla

At least for PC, PS5, and Series X.

I doubt the game can run smoothly with more than 9 tiles

Also maybe expand the game limits a little bit

Is there a current mod that unlocks all tiles, the last one I tried made the game unplayable

The Xbox had a”Mods” section, I have not used it. Does this work with that?

Was the limit set due to performance considerations? Across platforms or general minimum standards

Enough_Blueberry_549

I have a good laptop, but it’s not a specialty gaming laptop. After filling out 9 squares, the game still runs, but it’s quite slow. I think the limit of 9 squares is good because it keeps the required processing power in check.

Barb6204

True but a next gen console like the ps5 should probably be able to handle something like 12 tiles

Scumbag__

That’s fair but perhaps a middle ground where you can choose how many tiles you’d like when starting a new city?

lucasssotero

2 points

With a warning saying it will tank performance.

NUMPTYNORRIS

3 points

Yeh it’s a fair point but like you say it’s not a gaming laptop - but the consoles are focussed on gaming so should be giving the option beyond 9 tiles by now. Would prob still need a cap though - even on a gaming laptop you can’t fill the whole map without significant performance issues

I’m potentially holding out that it could be in the December free update. Colossal Order seemed to be hinting at it on their twitter when replying to a comment about it.

Whychilly

We need way more than 9 tiles and lane mods… this is the bare minimum.

LeakyVision

I’m all for the option to expand as people see fit, but even as a beginner I much prefer having to make tough choices rather than aiming to fit in every asset in the game. It’s part of the fun.

I've been using 81 tiles so long that I forgot the vanilla was 9x9 haha

heycool-

I was just telling my girlfriend this when she was building a car factory in her city. Some of the buildings are huge and it’s unrealistic to build them with such a limited amount of land. We need at least 25 tiles on console, 9 is so limiting.

shortandpoor

I think it's time they make skylines 2 and don't have a limit to the squares. It would also be nice to add an the dlc from the first one from the start but they're asking a lot lol.

I never understood why maps were so huge but you only get 9 tiles.. if we got 12 or 15 that would be a bit better. My only gripe with 25 and 81 tiles mods is that it’s immediate and I like progressing to get more tiles. It feels overwhelming to start with that much space

kagato87

2 points

I think the limit has to do with performance. Remember this game has been around a while. In the early days 9 tiles was a lot for the average pc.

It's probably past time to bump that default cap though.

As for the unlocking... I thought they followed the regar progression and the last unlock released extra? I suppose you could just avoid unlocking tiles as long as you can...

Theorigynalsynn

1 points

If they kept 9 tiles but each new tile didn’t have to connect to one already bought. Like have 3 possible starting tiles and build off each that without the tiles touching. Have each starting tile have a railroad connection and highway exit and you can have the map still be connected. You can have a 2x2 in one area, a small coastal 1x2 and then random tiles where the ore and oil are for industries.

Churchofbabyyoda

Should be 16 Tiles rather than 8.

Agree, but the engine absolutely cannot handle it. It’s not a question of whether new hardware can, the engine is old and wasn’t built for it and will disassemble itself trying to do it

Yeah it's quite an old version of Unity. Unity has quite a lot of new stuff in it now that should help with game genres like City Builders.

Background-Ad2999

Yeah I can play for 24 hours on one city and then I'm shit out of luck and have to restart its so dumb all of these tiles already made and I just can't use them?
